Hudson has a chance to make an impression and secure a postseason spot. It would be nice to get a little momentum going into the weekend. This is such a versatile team with a lot of guys able to play multiple positions or pitch multiple innings. Gonna be on Marmol to mix and match well.
stcard25…You know, as a spectator, Hudson can be frustrating to watch when he works, but I recall many of his turns in ’19 in which he was remarkably effective. I’m certainly no Big League pitching coach, so I can’t begin to pinpoint with any sort of precision what his exact issues are when he has difficuly recording outs. As a layman, I can certainly notice when he doesn’t have good command of the strike zone, but almost anyone can see that. I do know that he’s a big, strong and still young 27 year old RHP’er with a W/L pct. of .653 and that it would be foolish to give up on him.
I hope they keep the regulars in the lineup and keep the foot on the gas pedal. Players have gotten enough of this rest stuff lately. Unless Goldschmidt and Arenado come around we are going to be two and out. They need to be in the lineup and getting their acts together. If they don’t get it going again it will be nothing but the doom and gloom that other posters have been talking about for 2-3 weeks now.

Been hearing for years the Cards’ objective is to get into the playoffs, not to win 100 games. That’s because, supposedly, who is hot going into October is what matters most. Yet the last two seasons, the Cards appear to not be overly concerned about being hot going into the playoffs after they have clinched, and are more concerned about auditioning for the last five or so positions on the playoff roster. Maybe they should focus on getting the first 20 or so positions razor sharp? Those are the guys most likely to win or lose playoff games.
I guess that I’m a little concerned that the Cardinals haven’t been hitting, but I’m reasonably confident the bats will come around by Friday, so I’m not going to worry about it until then. A guy once told me that he didn’t have a single thing to worry about. He then went on to say that he was worried about that…
stlcards, thanks for the word on O’Neill, good to hear. But based on what Oli said earlier, it will be for hitting only since he isn’t playing in the field this week. If so, we still have the outfield dilemma we discussed earlier.

Hey Euro, I was thinking about what you said about Nola, so I did some looking insofar as fairly recent post-season turns on 3 days rest. I was surprised. Most all of them panned out real well.

I sure hope Arenado, Molina, Goldschmidt, Edman, etc, etc, get the start tomorrow in the last game. I never did like this idea of resting players. Resting them from what??? It just makes them rusty if you ask me.

The appeal is against the ump’s call. Hitters, pitchers and catchers can appeal an ump’s call on balls/strikes. Then they check the electronic eye. Teams get 3 failed challenges per game, then no more. You keep your challenge if the call is overturned.
Update: Euro is correct. There were two ABS variations tested this season. One is pure ABS, the other is ABS used only for appeals. The AFL is using the latter.

The appeal is not against the ump.
Either you or MLB and I are wrong. Here’s an excerpt from their site. Link is included:
ABS CHALLENGE: The Automatic Ball-Strike (“ABS”) Challenge System that began in the Florida State League in 2022 will be implemented on the experimental level at the Arizona Fall League for games played at Salt River Fields and Chase Field. Batters, Pitchers, and Catchers will have the opportunity to challenge an umpire’s ball or strike call if they feel it is incorrect. All challenges will be evaluated by the ABS system to determine the outcome. Both teams are allowed three challenges and will be awarded their challenge back if correct.
See correction made above. After I typed it, I realized pure ABS is not the flavor being used in the AFL.

bling’s question makes a lot of sense if you’re thinking the appeal is against the automatic system. What would be used to counter the automatic system? Tennis already experienced a similar situation in that players could challenge a line judge’s call and they’d refer to the electronic eye for appeal. Then Covid happened and they didn’t allow line judges on the court, so instead they used the electronic eye to call all shots in real time. If a shot was out, a voice recording would make the call. The funny thing is players still wanted to make challenges on calls they didn’t believe. Announcers would laugh and say “do they think Hawkeye (one of the auto systems) is going to change its mind?” As a compromise they’d let the players see a replay of the shot, which was really just Hawkeye stating for a second time what it had already called. A lot of tournaments have permanently eliminated line judges in favor of the full auto system.
I’ll probably miss this game. As soon as I hit Submit I am heading down to the German restaurant in Jasper, the Snitzlebank, and eat dinner with two Vietnam veterans and another guy that was in the Air Force Academy. Probably won’t be home until 9:30 at the earliest. I’ll be checking the scores on the iPhone at times.
I am going to go out on a limb here and predict that Goldschmidt gets off the schneid with a two run dinger to left. Redbirds romp away in this one and win it going away 8-3.

Rat I believe The Snitzelbank is the place I frequented back when I made the St. Louis-Louisville trip regularly. I always had the sauerbraten. If its the same place, its been there a long time.
