ParticipantI’d like them to go after a premier closer as well. This stop gap stuff needs to end. Marmol stayed with Helsley precisely because he didn’t trust anyone else at that point. He had two starters up to replace Helsley. And had to use another in Montgomery for major innings in the second game.
Atlanta used a similar model last year for their bullpen, but didn’t rest on their laurels and went out and got Jansen and McHugh, then traded for Iglesias. When Jackson went down, it didn’t hurt them due to the great depth they’ve built.
The depth Mozeliak built, meanwhile, included a bunch of guys that aren’t even with the team anymore.

Yep. Edwin Diaz is in the Kenley Jansen circa 2016 territory as far as a certainty to be elite for the near future. I’d happily go 5 years and $100-110M to guarantee the 9th is locked down for years to come.
October 9, 2022 at 12:37 pm #204059I am 95% certain that Arenado comes back.
I think Waino comes back for one more year.
I hope Q comes back as long as the deal is reasonable.
I would not bring Dickerson back.
I would definitely throw money at Contreras. We need him. I am all for building from within but if we are serious at making a run at the world series in 2023 I don’t think Knizner and Herrera are the answer.
I would sign someone like Joc Pederson. We need a power LH bat who can play the OF.
I would try to trade for someone like Shane Bieber. He would be our ace. The price would be high but we have enough good young players to get the attention of the Guardians.

ParticipantThe Guardians are a playoff team with a great young core.
I like Pederson too. Especially if we trade Carlson, Noot, or Burleson.

ParticipantDeJug has gotta go. Wainwright should not come back. They should have traded one of the other young outfielders and kept you know who. BTW, checked the box scores. Goldy and Arenado in the two games vs. the Phillies, 1 for 15, 6 strikeouts, 12 runners left on base.
October 9, 2022 at 7:16 pm #204088wagee12…You don’t have to worry about DeJong anymore.
October 10, 2022 at 8:09 am #204125DeJong gets 9M in 2023 doesn’t he? Is he for sure gone?
Even if the Cards have to eat 100% of that he should not take up a roster spot. He can cut the grass, wash equipment, and sell peanuts to earn his pay.
Added to the 6M he pulled in this year I think he will be able to get by.
October 10, 2022 at 9:19 am #204132DeJong gets 9M in 2023 doesn’t he? Is he for sure gone?
I don’t know for sure if he will be gone, but if he is traded, then yes the Cardinals would have to eat almost all of that money. I guess they will have to decide if they want to do that, which they did with Fowler.
October 10, 2022 at 9:48 am #204134bccran
ParticipantMight be a good idea to compare whatever his value is as a late inning defensive replacement to a prospect of two they would get if they traded him and ate some or most of his salary.
October 10, 2022 at 10:17 am #204141I wonder if we could package DeJong with Hudson and Hererra/Knizner and Burly for something good
Trout?
DeJong, Hudson, Knizner, Burleson
Trade simulator says that is an overpay by us of more than 5…i think you HAVE to overpay…and maybe even moreThen look for a veteran catcher to play with Herrera…Tucker Barnhart?
and re-sign Q
find a veteran SS on the cheap…maybe Jorge Mateo on the cheap…he can play all over and is a top stolen base threatDonovan, Goldy, Trout, Arenado, ONeill, Gorman, Carlson, Herrera, Edman
Yepez, Mateo, Barnhart, Noot
Q, Mik, Monty, Matz, Jack/……Waino/Pallante/Libertore/field
Helsley, Hicks, Gallegos, Jojo, Genesis, etc.October 10, 2022 at 10:18 am #204142gscottar…They were paying Fowler $16.5 M per year. Easily the worst signing during the Mozeliak era and probably Cardinal history. If the Cardinals were willing to take that hit, I’m reasonably certain they’ll give him what he’s owed and part ways with Paul DeJong. I’d also say it’s in the best interest of both the Cardinals and Paul to do so. He’ll get his chance to latch on somewhere and a roster spot will open up for the next great 13th round pick…
October 10, 2022 at 10:25 am #204144thejager…My impression is that the possibilty of Mike Trout being fitted for a Redbird uniform and manning up in CF at Busch Stadium in the near future isn’t as unlikely as it might seem.
October 10, 2022 at 10:30 am #2041461tough….i think he watched Pujols go back there after hearing about it for the last 10yrs from Albert and get so much love and respect…then looked at his own team./fanbase which seems to care little for him as they embrace Ohtani as he passes milestone after milestone and i think he may just push for it
Trout fits right in with Goldy and Arenado…kinda same age bracket…all potential HOFers (Goldy may be borderline)
Cardinals show up and appreciate greatness…as you finish your career isnt that what you w ant? Instead of some neverending rebuild in LAA?
October 10, 2022 at 10:38 am #204147thejager…It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Mike was at this very moment having a phone conversation with his old buddy Albert in which Pujols was telling him to expect a visit from Mozeliak…Haha! In addition to that, if Johnny can get a signature, he knows that he’ll have a statue of himself adorned with a bowtie placed right next to Musial on Spruce St. in downtown St. Louis…Now that’s motivation to go get the great CF’er!

ParticipantI don’t get why people are pushing for a #1 starter. We have plenty of pitching. And if Quintana is extended, we have even more.
Closer? We have one of the elite closers in MLB. Helsley is arbitration eligible for the 1st time in 2023, so he’s under control for 3 more years.
October 10, 2022 at 11:01 am #204150That’s a huge contract Mr. Trout has. He has been injured the last two seasons playing 36 and 119 games respectively. He owed 296M the next 8 years. The Cardinals would be crazy to take him. The Angels on the other hand would be more than happy to trade him

Helsley was a completely different pitcher this year than his previous 3. He could revert back and if he doesn’t, guess what, we would have two excellent back-end options.
Not only that, but I’m sure you saw the breakdown in Game 1 with our three big relief pitchers (Hicks, Gallegos, and Helsley) being all over the place with their command. Helsley was the one where the dam broke as Marmol didn’t trust going to Flaherty or Pallante in that situation either.
IMO, we either need to convert the stashed starters into trustworthy relief options (Woodford, Thompson, Pallante) or go out an get a top-notch FA like a McHugh or Jansen from this past year. And this is the way we have operated since Isringhausen.
October 10, 2022 at 12:11 pm #204159Trout “injured” this year put up All Star + numbers.
We got Arenado without having to pay the full price, the right prospects back, the right deal, and yeah ill take Trout for 8yrs.
And shaving some money off the books is what the Angels want right? to pay up for Ohtani? Well, i think if the Cards can shave off 100m it becomes palatable at 196m, and at 24m per year…even has he ages…that’s far from bad.
Trout is still elite on defense, running and hitting, not to mention being a fearsome opponent. He also is baseball player, and if he ages out of CF that’s ok, first to the corners…then to 1st or at least DH at the end.
No one thought we could get Goldy and he’d extend…we did
No one thought we could get or afford Arenado….we didHistory seems to show we definitely can make these deals happen…there is a huge star power vacuum happening with Albert and Yadi leaving…Nolan and Goldy are great…but the FO needs to fill that vacuum…Trout is everything we don’t have and need
Will they go for it? I doubt it, but many doubted Nolan too…and a disgruntled or motivated player on the other end can force it a bit too.. ALbert can help as well
