Strikeouts were/are never an issue, the issue is hitting or his lack thereof with RISP and Runners on base. Anemic has been his tendency …just like his 2nd AB.

    Stats back this up.

I wonder what Ricky Horton thinks today.

Thankfully Herrera picked up the RBI.

I wonder if the Cardinals should make Herrera a LF?

Over time and with more at bats that will tend to even out. Guys usually end up with similar numbers in the various base situations once they accumulate a representative sample of plate appearances. Whether Burly earns some regular time to get those at bats or not is still to be seen.

How do fans feel about Goldschmidt’s, Gorman’s and Winn’s ABs today? Burleson tends to be the “whipping boy” with too many Cardinals fans. They need to be more inclusive in their criticism.

I don’t really think Burleson’s played enough for fans to have noticed.

KCB, I don’t think you have a clue as to how highly Oli regards Burleson as a hitter.

When Noot, and, Tommy, get off. The injured. List, check in, with me. On how, much, Oli thinks. Of, Burleson.

OK. But you were speculating Burleson might not be on the OD roster. Right? Do you still stand by that?

The #5 OF spot will go to either an offensive or defensive player. If it’s offense, Burleson’s will probably get the nod. If it’s defensive, it will probably be Siani.

The only way Marmol would take Siani over Burleson is if he needed a CF. And keep in mind, Marmol has a fabulous defensive CF at his disposal in Scott.I’m telling you, Marmol really respects Burleson as a hitter. Maybe as much as he does Edman and Nootbaar. IMO

I don’t think roster construction/player selection belongs to Marmol. Not his call.

Oh really? You are saying the manager doesn’t get to select his roster.

There’s that. I doubt the starting lineup is either.

Never has been the managers call Shady. There were some epic battles with Mo and TLR, over the roster, when Mo wouldn’t let Tony have his way. TLR would go straight to the press and air his laundry. Too funny.

I’d like to think all 3 rookie managers since, had and have input on the roster, up until it becomes “philosophical differences”.

None of us are 100% sure on this, but it seems the front office has a lot of input into who the manager has at his disposal. I think a part of why Shildt was not retained was that Mike pushed back some on who he wanted on the active roster, and the front office said, “Look bud, we know who should be on the roster – you stick to making game decisions.”

My primary memory of the Shildt era was the near flawless defensive play of Cardinal teams he managed. During that 17 game streak I never once detected anything that resembled an oven mitt.

Few managers have ever had control of the roster. They don’t draft, trade, set contracts.Never have. A respected Manager may have a voice or some input. I don’t get the sense the Cards front office cares too much what Shildt/Marmol/insert next surprise replacement thinks. (see TLR/Shildt outcomes)

Shildt ‘s teams were always fundamentally sound. TLR/Herzog ditto.

To tie that back to this thread, that’s why I challenge Shady about Burleson’s impending super-stardom.

Walker will be a poor-average corner outfielder for a good while. He’s going to be there for awhile. Burleson will be bad in left. The outfield can’t be that bad with the Cardinals starting rotation allowing the amount contact we expect.

Burleson has not done enough at the plate to justify his shortcomings as a defensive player. Or enough YET to profile as a DH.

Hope “Burly” does well. I sense he is a good guy. He is going to get opportunities with injuries to Edman and Nootbar. I sincerely hope he is used wisely.

Exactly. I don’t see him as ever being a regular player for the Cardinals. He has a good bat. If he can increase his power #’s, he will have value as a trade piece. That’s what they are doing with all the playing time they’re giving him. Plus they need his bat while Noot and Tommy recover.

Yes that is exactly what he is saying. As Cardinal manager you push the buttons you are asked to push or you end up managing the Padres.

If that’s truly the case with the Cardinals. It seems kind of dysfunctional.

Baseball has operated that “dysfunctional” way for decades. It’s a little surprising that this is news to serious fans.

Wow! Eight pages to discuss the hitting prowess, or lack thereof, of THE Alec Burleson!

You guys take your Cardinal baseball seriously! I love it! Who are we discussing next? Heity Cruz?

A couple of years ago we had massive seperate threads about Burleson and Jake Woodford. You just never know who will become the next obsession.
