feel bad fo Schafer a bit…i feel like his potential role would potentially never be a full inning assignment like he got today…maybe it’s just work and it doesnt matter….but ouch…cant feel good even if the team doesnt really care

start times are definitely an issue too…good point

still West Coast games for East coast teams cant be creating a lot of ad revenue…moving up the games by 30 minutes might not seem like much…but for those late night SF games…a start time of 930 gets a lot more people watching that the 10:05 ones

If the NL adopted the DH…i’d listen a little but i woudlnt eat almost any money AND definitely not Carpenter

as a DH with emergency 1b ability MAYBE

and as Brian said a late season low to zero cost acquisition for bows and MAYBE DH in the postseason…id be up for it..heck i might even give a little bit more as he is a red jacket guy

    i agree entirely

but for knowing this specific situation it’s still just a guess and I am happy to hear alternate guesses…

the recent Rays moves leave a lot of people confused (not just me and not just on this forum)…so for as much as this may be about a single issue, it is a culmination of recent moves that seems to make each one of them get more attention that some of them may get individually

Still it is nice to talk about something happening…even if it is a head scratcher for me

I cant believe we have a game tomorrow and Arrieta, Holland, Lynn, Cobb, Moose are still out there…one or two i get it..but you’d think the guys would be antsy…

Cant help but think MIL is angling for one of the SPs…If they traded Santana and some other parts to the Royals for Duffy and HErrera…then swing a decent deal for Cobb or Lynn they’d be making not just the Cards sweat but also the Cubs…a little better pen and 2 solid SPs would be huge and achievable

    agree BikeMike

only us crazy people watch every game every day…the commitment to watching every day isnt required for most fans…though more than once a week seems like it should be so time commitment allotted overall makes sense

Football is extremely boring IMO…35-50 seconds between every single play and more than half the time nothign happens…or very little….and 3 and outs are common…so you get 3 and out punt…5-6 and out punt…tv break…blah blah… the scoring in the game is atrociously slow…way worse than baseball…

the numbers may be high but the scoring isnt…31-24 (a high scoring game) is what? 6-7 touchdowns and a couple kicks? over 3-4+ hours? but it’s the build up right? blah…it’s a big tease half the time…big build up and NOTHING 10 plays…FG…8 plays punt…8 plays and 3 penalties and a punt oh…and a replay or two.. not that baseball doesnt induce the build up too and have fast half innings…but at least they dont cover up the pace with big numbers…. any game where you dont have to pay attention for large amounts of time seems pretty lazy and boring… outside of a few QB calls and some impressive athleticism from time to time it’s basically just chess by guys wearing headsets in the booths…

I am also interested in between inning times and bullpen changes etc. pre TV…someone must know all that

i didn’t say it was a bad move…just puzzling IMO… they got back a reliever and a prospect…seems about right…though i thought they were shedding money and Hudson isnt cheap

it still is a gamble regardless if it is a good bet or not and as for a trade happening..to me it sounds like deals are on the table a lot…maybe all teams work different of course they do…

THe Cron deal didnt seem a HUGE deal anyways it didnt have lots of moving parts…the Angels seemed troubled in finding a way to play all their new players with Valbuena, Pujols, Cron maybe even Ohtani needing DH and 1b time…

it’s still a gamble…and if you don’t get the teams you want to make the offer you are risking something you dont have to risk…if your only way of making the league know you want to move a guy quickly is to DFA him…then it seems to me like you have a GM with communication issues

and after the Odorizzi deal where the return was pretty low…it makes me wonder even more…why not just DFA Odorizzi? Looks like they got a better return with that tactic IMO

all these GMs are smart folks but that doesnt mean i have to agree with their tactics

fine with me…as long as Archer doesnt head to MIL or CHI i coudl handle it I think

with Maybin and Gomez to the Rays i’d have to think outfielders are set so the big key trade chips for MIL seem less an option…unless the took PHillips and Broxton and waited on them

I always forget about Ramos on their team…who is also making money

we coudl add him to the mix for trade too…solve our backup catcher concern if we movd Kelly..plus he is only signed for this one year so we’d have time for Knizner to get ready

    Archer + Hech + Ramos + Colome
    for
    Flaherty + Kelly + Gomber + Tuivalala + GGarcia + Arozarena/Mercado/Machado + Gant/Artie Reyes + Plummer

craziness i know….so many players i lose count on how to group them…Flaherty and Kelly are big pieces for Archer with a little left over for Colome…the money savings would be huge for the Rays and the Cardinals woudl get good contracts and veteran players needed for a serious run this year…while still having plenty behind them in the system

    Hech replaces GGarcia
    Ramos replaces Kelly
Archer takes Waino or Mikolas spot
    Colome takes Tuivalala spot

Waino/Mik and Norris and Hudson are next men up…

it’s all silly…i just forgot about Ramos and that he’d have some value for us should we want to move Kelly in a deal with them…they might not want to deal him either…but Ramos’ brittleness wouldnt be a problem for us as a backup

CC…i agree it could be…i think it all depends on if the pitchers pitch well early…i think last year it was so overwhelming even one guy with options might have helped it..and we seem to have one spot open

    Gregerson
    Cecil
    Lyons
    Leone
    Norris
    Tuivalala
    Bowman
    Brebbia

Bowman and Brebbia have options…so that helps…and if the club is serious about 8 man bullpen then we should be fine

The key will be how long the FO forces MM to have to keep running out guys that arent pitching well if they dont pitch well…last year it didnt go well

Lots of pressure for guys to do well early IMO…
Would we cut our losses early with Norris if need be?
Will we send Bowman down if needed?
How long will we go to Gregerson if he struggles early? Would we cut bait on him?
    Cecil?
    Leone?
Tuivalala is kind of in the LYons and Socolovich role this year…we liked Soco so much he stuck around longer than he was effective…i dont think tuivalala is the same exactly Brebbia seems more closer but at least he has options

i dont doubt they had a reason…just seems a bit too much of a gamble for an asset of his value

I cant imagine that CJ Cron deal or even the Souza and Odorizzi deals were not going to last another week

commercials are why the game is so much longer than it was ages ago…that’s it…it only got worse recently with the things they are addressing.. which is good… but it will never go back to the times pre-tv days

it’s slowly paced game but it is far from long… football is much more horrendously slow…especially college football…that crap goes on for 4 hours… and so many commercials…

baseball being “slow” is one of the biggest farcest ever…there is stuff happening about every 20seconds and the action isnt interrupted for time outs or commercial breaks other than at points where gaps in time are needed to play the game (half innings)

all the minutiae they are “fixing” shouldn’t have ever been allowed to happen in the first place if they woudl have been enforcing rules…they are just making a correction to get back to a norm…but it is still a norm that is post big business and tv revenue

still no consequences that affect the game (thus their stats and thus paychecks) then it won’t matter at all…. fines are worthless…balls and strikes…outs and ejections…immediate uncontested and non-reducible suspensions? it would be gone in one month….maybe less…all it would take is ONE game decided by someone not following these rules for it to all change…

thanks Brian….only issue with my 129 clicks is that next year i won’t be clicking through them all…nor will i be interested in other images sets should they come up

clicks dont equal quality…maybe that’s what they want…but the mortgaged their future clicks by throwing out bad ones…that’s their business choice so be it

as for the ones in your article…i usually look at those too…havent yet though!

last year was prime example of that IMO

the bullpen at the beginning of the year was set and had NO wiggle room outside of Bowman (who was the only one doing well early) for optioning anyone down for a fresh arm

MM was stuck with those guys and trying to find a way for them to work…the pen only really got better once the front office designated Soco Brox and Siegrist

Oh, Cecil, Rosy all were poor early…

MM had no option but to mix and match his parts who werent working with other parts that werent working…Bowman was leaned on because he was the only who was doing well outside of Lyons who they were still wary to use for their concern over the need for a fill in rotation piece

Once Lyons was freed from mop up roles, Brebbia came up..did the pen right itself…Oh continued to struggle but almost everyone else had an uptick save maybe Bowman who because of the overuse never coudl recover

Sure MM made mistakes at times…but when you only have one or two guys performing and no ability to bring in fresh arms to try what is anyone to do?

To me any blame for Bowman is on the FO and the other underperforming pitchers…and not MM…

agreed GScott…plus he is still controllable…if he is redundant we could move him, also as you say he kind of proved that his production wasnt limited to Coors by the good year last year

as insurance for our outfield and power lefty bat he’d be valuable…

I am sure a lot of teams are thinking the same thing of course

the Rays are just so confusing…they designate him…then they sign Maybin? for almost what they had with Dickerson? moving Souza was a head scratcher too….not to mention the Odorizzi deal..and i read Kirmaier is up in arms about all of it too

the Longoria deal looked solid as i think ARroyo rounds out to be a solid player but the others seem very poor

i mean why not designate HEchavarria? he is making over 5 million i think and has little to no bat and they have plenyt of bodies to throw at that spot…

and why not move their biggest chips if they are tanking

    very confusing

the Dickerson Designate for assignment is the weirdest IMO..i cant imagine they offered him to everyone and got ZERO responses…to the point that theyd be willing to take nothign in return..

    Anyone thought about Corey Dickerson?

He is kind of sitting out there right now…i know it takes a while to get to us on waivers…and we have a lot of outfielders, but i wonder as bench power he might be worth it

he is power lefty bat…and it would probably push Bader to AAA but that isnt the worst thing in the world, he seems mostly a LFer at this point but all the starters can play CF if need be

dickerson was in the AS game last year and didnt play all that poorly…he doesnt make that much money and is controllable until 2020….i believe we were interested in him in years past

Did the Cards hire a new photographer?

I feel the new images i saw on STLToday (i clicked through all 129 of them) were pretty poor…I am a professional photographer and i dont like to slam other photographers, and they arent the worst thing in the world or anything, but compared to the past these seemed pretty poor…

They feel very rushed and the background color isnt good, i like the idea of the silhouette but the poses and faces of the players feel like they were done by a photographer who doesnt do portraits and has never seen these players before.

I usually really get excited about the portraits every year and they havent ever let me down as a whole…they did this year… bummer

I think it just comes down to who do you like better Odorizzi or Flaherty/Hudson? Odorizzi has always flashed potential…but never really lived up to it IMO

if we want potential we have it in Flaherty…and Odorizzi seems a 10-12 game winner…which is probably what we could get out of Flaherty/Waino/Hudson

and this doesnt even bring up Reyes’

If Flaherty was IN the rotation instead of #6 or #7 right now at the expense of Mikolas or Waino I think it’d be a harder call

Agreed GS…still i think even the Cubs might have regretted not making that deal earlier…with the price they paid in Eloy I can’t imagine the price was much higher before that seeing as they dont have much else to offer

If i was considering moving my best trade piece in Archer at any time during the year i wouldnt have decided on a 4 man rotation for a month at any point….every day you gamble with an injury…and a 4 man rotation no matter how the games are scheduled seems risky…and only slightly less if you are planning on keeping Archer

Flaherty + Kelly + Gant + Artie Reyes + Greg Garcia
    for
    Archer + Hechavarria

They can ditch the 4 man rotation and even if they want to protect Flaherty Artie and Gant can fill in until Honeywell and Flaherty are as ready as the Rays want
They can slash payroll and go hard after someone or two this next offseason
They can still field a decent team albeit with 2 really nice top prospects in tow
Garcia, Gant and Artie all would have value even after they may be passed up for better options as quality bench players and bullpeners or back end starters

An potentially this year and future lineup of:
    Kelly/Ramos (C). Cron (1b), Adames (SS/Robertson), Arroyo (3b), Duffy/Garcia/Schimpf/Robertson (2b), Kirmaier, Mallex, Span/Micah Johnson?, and DH Brad Miller/Ramos

isnt that bad…especially when they’d have money to go out and get a Pollock or good OF next offseason and a nice DH

the rotation of Snell, Honeywell, FLaherty, Faria, Andriese/Gant/Eovaldi/Artie
    is also pretty impressive

and also both the lineup and rotation could be good and CHEAP for a while letting them pick and choose key FAs to bring in to make them competitive quicker

sure the rotation would look better with ARcher in it…but Kelly and Flaherty long term seem a better fit for the Rays than Archer does at his price (even if it is a good deal)

I dunno…the fit seems pretty obvious….even if we’d need to kick in another prospect or two …we have the types they’d want… outfielders, SPs, 2b types, crap we even have good DH types in Voit and JMart

i think it is a stretch to think Munoz is even more than a backup SS…which isnt a bad thing his body and build looks a lot like Diaz and i have a hard time thinking he moves much differently (though i am excited to see)

he didnt play full time SS last year at AA and AAA…mayeb he was blocked maybe he wasnt …i dont watch minor league A’s games…i cant say

what i do think is that if he was in OUR system last year we wouldnt be so confident about his SS ability as it looks a lot like other play ever where players we have seen

Sosa seems our closest real SS…even though i liked Meija brief stint last year there…just wish i coudl feel as good about his bat…even though it didnt look terrible in his brief time..

not really…but what i do take seriously is people for a forum where the prime reason for being there is to discuss and communicate …to actively try to HALT discussion all for personal validation

I do believe trying to halt and actively stop discussion in a place where that is the reason for it’s existence IS mean spirited and out of line… it’s pretty clearly so

whether the trade ideas are good or bad or whatever doesnt matter one bit…what matters is people are encouraged to contribute and discuss…anyone trying to demean that idea or demean people who are trying to stop people from demeaning others shoudlnt be here and through proof of their actions should never have even wanted to be here in the first place

supposedly it is reported the Rays are done with their tear down

i guess it makes sense to some degree as Archer and Colome are controlled and youngish to be around for a build up…Souza move was a head scratcher to me along with the Dickerson move…

still i’d swoop in and offer good young almsot ready pitchers for Archer and see what coudl happen…

what troubles me and confuses me is them also saying they are going to use a 4 man rotation for a while…with off days i guess it could work, but arent you just inviting trouble?

Archer + Hechavarria for the win IMO

i think he will be dealt at the deadline for a ransom…which is a smart play for TOR and for Donaldson…he will get paid and the Jays will get good value out of him to a team that thinks he is the difference in a WS victory…

all the Jays extension talk i think was just BS to try to get that trade deadline value up before the season started…they arent going to pay Donaldson…not with Vlad Jr coming…they shoudl be focusing on locking up Stroman and figuring out a way to move Tulo so they can get the youth movement and rebuild going
