last year was prime example of that IMO
the bullpen at the beginning of the year was set and had NO wiggle room outside of Bowman (who was the only one doing well early) for optioning anyone down for a fresh arm
MM was stuck with those guys and trying to find a way for them to work…the pen only really got better once the front office designated Soco Brox and Siegrist
Oh, Cecil, Rosy all were poor early…
MM had no option but to mix and match his parts who werent working with other parts that werent working…Bowman was leaned on because he was the only who was doing well outside of Lyons who they were still wary to use for their concern over the need for a fill in rotation piece
Once Lyons was freed from mop up roles, Brebbia came up..did the pen right itself…Oh continued to struggle but almost everyone else had an uptick save maybe Bowman who because of the overuse never coudl recover
Sure MM made mistakes at times…but when you only have one or two guys performing and no ability to bring in fresh arms to try what is anyone to do?
To me any blame for Bowman is on the FO and the other underperforming pitchers…and not MM…
February 22, 2018 at 2:14 pm #44505The lack of pitchers with minor league options is going to be a problem this year as well.
February 22, 2018 at 4:04 pm #44513CC…i agree it could be…i think it all depends on if the pitchers pitch well early…i think last year it was so overwhelming even one guy with options might have helped it..and we seem to have one spot open
Gregerson
Cecil
Lyons
Leone
Norris
Tuivalala
Bowman
BrebbiaBowman and Brebbia have options…so that helps…and if the club is serious about 8 man bullpen then we should be fine
The key will be how long the FO forces MM to have to keep running out guys that arent pitching well if they dont pitch well…last year it didnt go well
Lots of pressure for guys to do well early IMO…
Would we cut our losses early with Norris if need be?
Will we send Bowman down if needed?
How long will we go to Gregerson if he struggles early? Would we cut bait on him?
Cecil?
Leone?
Tuivalala is kind of in the LYons and Socolovich role this year…we liked Soco so much he stuck around longer than he was effective…i dont think tuivalala is the same exactly Brebbia seems more closer but at least he has optionsFebruary 27, 2018 at 8:23 am #44728What heavy relief workloads, you ask? The ones the Cardinals themselves are acknowledging and taking actions against.
Bowman knows the trend of high workloads and the trouble some pitchers have had as a result.
It's how he got his role.
How he, and others, and being preserved this spring, and how many resilience is his best pitch. #cardinals #stlcards https://t.co/VJoBRfvama
