Everything I have read is that Solarte is expected to serve as an infield sub for Toronto. He did not have a great 2017 so there would be a huge dropoff from Donaldson to him. I would not connect those dots.

Solarte could very well bump Travis at 2nd. Donaldson is just so perfect for us, and Toronto has needs we can easily fill.
We still need to clear roster spots with a three for one which will allow us to sign the final pieces without releasing assets.
Even if we simply signed Cobb, Reed, and Morrison, we would have to give up picks for Cobb and at least two decent prospects from the 40 man roster.The 40-man is currently at 39, so one addition could be made with no other moves required. As I suggested on another thread, Mayers and Valera would not be missed terribly if two more 40-man spots are needed in a hurry.
Those are the two choices for sure, but they both carry potential to make contributions next year. Further, we need a pitcher and a hitter. We could and may forgo the hitter, but I could see three additions if there was space.
It seems to me that the Jays and Orioles are stubbornly and foolheartedly “going for it” again this year so the best time to get Donaldson or Machado will have to wait until July or next winter. We should be patient and not gut the farm system for these two guys.
To the contrary, the Jays and Orioles are fulfilling commitments to fans and players. They should be commended. This popular idea that you only go for it when you are at an apex and your competition is down goes against the core principles of sports. Losing sucks and is contagious. I would avoid it at all costs.

You always go for it, or you stop charging people unreasonable prices during years you are not trying to win a championship. Since the latter never happens, you maintain your character and try your best.My only point is that the Cards are not going to be able to use 40-man roster space as an excuse for not making significant additions (nor would I expect they would).
Didn’t the Jays GM come out and say they were going to reward their attendance folks by going for it again this year? If so, Solarte is just a depth piece.
Pads, that is what I have read as well (about Solarte being depth). There were a lot of concerns about their starting middle infield (Devon Travis and Tulo) being injury prone.
I dont think the Jays or the O’s will do much worse at the trade deadline than by trading now. If I am right, there is little downside for them in waiting and significant upside in terms of fan loyalty. The only real downside is the risk of injury plus some salary.
Sounds good Nigel, but how is that plan working out for the Phillies, Tigers, Royals, and Giants? Not so good as all four won’t be sniffing the playoffs for years to come. Beginning in 2019 the Jays and O’s will be battling it out for 4th in the AL East for the foreseeable future.
Reports today have the Jays agreeing to give Donaldson a record $23 million this season to avoid arbitration. I wonder if this has any trade impact.

I imagine most of the teams had a pretty good idea where his arb number was going to land. I don’t see it impacting trade talks one way or the other.
i dunno…23 million is a record for arbitration…it wouldnt surprise me if some teams were holding out for a non-record breaking number
Cots had him projected at $21M and MLB Trade Rumors had him at $20.7M, so I don’t know if the $2M difference is enough to drastically change the trade outlook. I wouldn’t think so since we are just talking about one year.

Not surprisingly, Donaldson and the Jays are not close on an extension. Talks have ended and the third baseman plans to become a free agent this fall. Interestingly, his agent is Dan Lozano, same as Albert Pujols.

Somewhere along the line the Cards may want him for this, his contract season. It may turn out to be one of his better ones. He’ll no doubt be motivated. He’s a guy that puts fear into pitchers and that is what we’re looking for…. or should be. As always its the $$ that is the determinant.
I think he will be a major trade target in July unless the Jays are in the playoff hunt, which is doubtful.
i think he will be dealt at the deadline for a ransom…which is a smart play for TOR and for Donaldson…he will get paid and the Jays will get good value out of him to a team that thinks he is the difference in a WS victory…
all the Jays extension talk i think was just BS to try to get that trade deadline value up before the season started…they arent going to pay Donaldson…not with Vlad Jr coming…they shoudl be focusing on locking up Stroman and figuring out a way to move Tulo so they can get the youth movement and rebuild going
