If we assume Robertson passes his physical, it would leave just six unsigned players and about $400K extra to work with. A week to finish up signings before the July 7 deadline.
July 1, 2017 at 5:21 pm #2629714th-rder Donivan Williams signs w/@Cardinals for $300k ($175k vs pool). Illinois HS SS, solid arm, avg run, bat potential. @MLBDraft

July 1, 2017 at 8:09 pm #26314Also understand #STLCards 8th rd pick Wilberto Rivera has agreed to terms, pending physical. Leaves 4 unsigned picks not likely to sign.

July 1, 2017 at 11:16 pm #26339Not sure why Donivan Williams commanded that price.
July 2, 2017 at 10:07 am #26376Because if they didn’t pay that amount he would just go to college an re-enter the draft at a later time

ParticipantI believe Williams is listed as
a third baseman on the ESPN draft tracker list.July 5, 2017 at 12:05 pm #26669That is basically top 5 round money. Nothing in his pedigree suggests he is worth that kind of money or from his point of view that he will have much chance at all of coming near that after waiting 3 years.
July 5, 2017 at 12:53 pm #26671Last year, JD Murders was given $400k to skip college….that is not an exorbitant sum to get a kid to skip college.
As for Williams – .514/.579/1.009 with 17 doubles, 4 triples and 10 HR and plays a premium position.
The knock on him, I guess, would be level of competition. But that is true of a lot of HS players.
July 5, 2017 at 12:57 pm #26672Please explain. Did someone not list Williams as a third baseman?
July 5, 2017 at 1:22 pm #26675Jim Callis’ tweet above lists him s HS SS.
July 5, 2017 at 1:55 pm #26679Thanks for the clarification. Usually the best athletes on a HS team play the most premium positions. The Cards announced Williams as a third baseman and that is what matters. But who knows? Maybe he will pull a DeJong later on and become a pro shortstop!
July 5, 2017 at 2:42 pm #26690bccran
ParticipantDon’t think DeJong is a pro SS holding down the position as a regular.
July 5, 2017 at 3:32 pm #26695Neither do I. But I do think DeJong gets to more balls than Diaz did.
July 25, 2017 at 1:04 pm #28633Update on the positional draft picks (not great though):
Hurst – .787 OPS at State College, playing CF
Robertson – .619 OPS at Peoria, playing SS
Kirtley – .618 OPS at State College, playing 2B
Zach Jackson – .342 OPS at GCL, playing CA
Chase Pinder – .866 OPS at Johnson City, playing CF
Donivan Williams – .678 OPS at GCL, playing 3B
Terry Fuller – .676 OPS at GCL, playing CFDonivan Williams just turned 18, which is young for the GCL (Same age as Delvin Perez and Fuller) Everyone else is age-appropriate for their leagues.
Fuller has a 40.0% K-rate thus far.
July 25, 2017 at 1:21 pm #28634Evan Mendoza has a .894 OPS at State College.
May 20, 2021 at 4:27 pm #161838This was a historically bad draft.
