If there’s any poetic justice in this game, the Cards score here to give Jack a much deserved win.
That’s not the most likely scenario, of course.
Flaherty still is looking good, even with the home run. That wasn’t a bad pitch that gave up the hit…and he’s still got good movement and velocity. Hopefully he can get Pina out and we can shut down the 8th and 9th.
It gets so tiring watching this team blow 5 good chances to extend the lead and one all or nothing hitter gets lucky and swings into a homer, and now it’s a battle of the bullpens.
Ok, so Bader flew out but Martinez struck out. Looking like Flaherty is heading back out with 95 pitches. A really fast inning would be huge here, but I can’t see any way he goes the full 9 innings tonight.
Carpenter strikes out on a low, low pitch 3-2. The Cardinals have struck out 11 times now and Bader is probably going to be #12 here.
11Ks for Jack, through 6. You can quibble a little bit with the efficiency, but only a little…great start by Flaherty.
Flaherty strikes Yelich out…err, nope. But he comes back to get the K, and Yadi’s throw to second wasn’t good as Thames gets credit for the steal.
Hate to say it but Flaherty probably shouldn’t go past this inning under any circumstances.
This umpire suddenly refuses to call anything at the bottom of the zone. Oh, now he calls one lower than the last two that Flaherty threw a few seconds before. What a joke.
First two on, Hader comes in and strikes out Muñoz and Wong, with Flaherty all that’s left to try to salvage the good start to the inning. We really badly needed a run here.
The leadoff man on in the first two innings and the Cards just haven’t moved them along yet. Muñoz looked really bad, swinging at two low fastballs well out of the zone.
Flaherty with two Ks in the first and a popout…but still not too efficient with 21 pitches on the ledger. The next step for Jack is pitching to contact in places where it’s possible. It would be nice to mix in a few <10 pitch innings tonight.
Pham called out on a garbage call. He sees video and must have said something to the ump, because he just got thrown out.
As Dan said, Matheny should have been out there causing some trouble. This kind of junk has gone on way too much this year, and someone needs to show some fire.
The GCL Cards won their fourth straight to open the season today, 5-1. SS/3B Raffy Ozuna is off to a hot start. Mateo Gil is hitting .333 early. Kevin Vargas is at .273. Griffin Roberts does not appear to have pitched yet.
Archer has rode the “bad stats, good peripherals” train for so long that I’m convinced that’s just what he is. He’s a poor man’s Carlos Martinez, IMO. He’s also hurt right now. If you get him for next to nothing, maybe it’s worth it.
We have a 3 WAR 3B right now…his name is Matt Carpenter. Why put an inferior player out there and give up anything at all for him? At least Donaldson has upside. I would give up Matt Bowman or Brett Cecil for Beltre, and nothing more.
185-200 innings of low 3s ERA (peripherals generally match) is pretty fine. He’s not Max Scherzer but he’s very cheap and just fine for this team. I don’t get the desire to throw that away…
One thing I have noticed lately with the Birds is that there seems to be no real sense of momentum one way or another, regardless of what happens. Win the game on a clutch HR…lose the next game. Blow out a foe tonight…lose tomorrow. Even “demoralizing” losses seem not to linger. I guess that could be a good thing tonight, as last night’s embarrassing loss should already be behind them. The Brew Crew are bound for a let down. Go Cards!
This one qualifies as a must win. Guerra is good, but so is Flaherty. Gotta see Jack be efficient and go 6+ innings to give the team a shot. If the bullpen gets taxed again, we might see a spiral and a sweep is certainly possible.
Trade the entire infield? Ok then. That certainly would shake things up though.
Carlos would certainly fetch a huge return if traded. The “his trade value drops with every start” crowd are living in dream land. He’s been durable and good, he’s young and signed to a very very friendly deal for a long time. He’d fetch something between what Quintana (a top 10 and back end top 100 type with two lotto guys) and Sale (two top 10 MLB, a top 10 team and lotto) went for. It would probably be closer to Sale, really. Think the Yankees would be falling all over themselves to make that trade? Lol.
As for Pham…a much better trade partner, if we’re going to purge him, would be the Twins. CF is a black hole for them, thanks to Buxton. Pham would be a huge upgrade and help them for three years, on the cheap. Pham probably wouldn’t return Royce Lewis, but Nick Gordon or Alex Kiriloff would be a good starting point. Add on a couple more prospects and at least we get something more than a below average AAAA SS.
I’m not saying the Cards come back to win, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this ends up a 1 or 2 run game. Third time through the lineup and the bullpen has held the last few games so maybe they’ll have some confidence.
Bw52, you listed a bunch of opinions that have been proven to be at best, uninformed. You’ve said Pham is average…which he’s not. You backtracked to say that without his excellent “partial season” he’s average. Again, he’s not, statistically. You said Ozuna is laughably better and pointed out a bunch of stats. We have shown that all of your stats actually point to Pham being better.
I don’t even want to comment on your trade proposal but I will. If you were a team GM, all the other GMs would love to have their chance to keep fleecing you over and over again. You really think Pham is worth a middling SS prospect who is *maybe* a marginal back end top 100 guy? Arizona wouldn’t trade AJ Pollock for that crap return and Pollock (who is basically Pham v1.0) is a rental, while Pham has 3 years left of team control. If St Louis traded their best position player for the last two years for that as the centerpiece, they should rightly fire Mo and Girsch.
