If Martinez had hustled out of the box, he probably beats that play out. Ah well…minor quibble on a good day of baseball so far.
A weak single to right is all he allows, and he gets a K with no walks. Pretty good for Holland. He threw a couple nasty sliders.
Weaver should have been through 6, but Garcia with a bad throw lets the inning continue. Aguilar up with a chance to cut into the lead. Mayers is coming in.
Bader with the single scores Fowler. He then goes first to third on the Wong single and scores on the Weaver bunt.
So this is what an efficient offense looks like, huh? 8-2 Cards and Chacin is out.
Some damage in the 4th for the Birds. Fowler doubles and Bader walks. Both advance on the sac fly, then score on Marp’s 2 out single. Garcia works a walk and then Jmart unloads on a 2 strike fastball, making it 6-2 Cards. Ozuna doubles and then Yadi smoked a liner to 3rd that is caught up end the inning.
Weaver with another inefficient outing. 64 pitches through 3. Thankfully, Flaherty and Mikolas allowed the pen to rest a little the last two days.
I’m not sure that they’d put Holland back there just yet. But I don’t know who else they might try. I’d really enjoy a comfortable win for a change. There really hasn’t been a low stress game in about a month…at least a winning low stress game.
Dakota outdueled former Cardinal farmhand Sandy Alcantara in that game as well.
Also of note…recent draft pick Colin Schmid had a game to forget tonight at Johnson City…7 ER in 2/3 of an inning, with 4 walks and 2 homers given up. His ERA sits at a whopping 94.50.
Weaver is due for a better start, and Chacin for a worse start. To get away from Milwaukee with a tie series would be huge. Not necessarily expecting it, but it would be nice.
Quiet in here today. Good to get a win, even though the offense was basically Yadi and nothing else.
This team so badly needs a game where they just smack doubles and singles all over with maybe a single homer on the ledger. Every game lately has been a battle or a blowout loss. A comfortable win wouldn’t be too much to ask for, would it?
I care about the number of wins and losses. How they get there means little to me, so long as they’re playing by the rules. The inability to drive guys in from third with less than two outs and the bullpen faltering are the two glaring things right now that have resulted in a lot of heartbreaking losses.
The walkoff was a fast ball not a slider unless you know many pitchers that throw a 96mph slider.Molina set up on the corner asking Norris to place it there. Good call on a 2-2 pitch or or 3-2 pitch,but not 0-2..

Also, I never saw ’85 because I was 2 that season. 2004 is the best Cardinal team I’ve seen though, followed closely by 2013. It’s a shame neither could overcome Boston.

They bunted with a man on first in like the 3rd inning with Bader. So…by the 6th it was pretty well foregone that Muñoz should have bunted.
He hit the homer on a good slider down in the zone. Not like he called a fat middle pitch. It just didn’t work. As one of the few guys who still appears to care about the team performance (and is still actually performing), he’s hardly the guy I’d target as a problem. Carpenter, Yadi and Pham are about the only vets who look like they’re trying right now. Everyone else is either very new, like Flaherty and Muñoz (Martinez to some degree) or just isn’t performing at all. Throw in some guys who I think have given up and…you’ve got a .500 ball club.
I think this one ends in a sweep and a below .500 team by the All Star break. Matheny seems to have lost the team, and it’s possible they are trying to drive him out. There is no Waino/Yadi who are still playing elite baseball to shake this team loose, and the current “leadership” can’t stay on the field due to injury, ineffectiveness or getting thrown out of the game.
Things are very bleak in 2018 and while I’d love to be wrong, it’s steaming toward time to punt on this season or shake up the coaching staff mid season. We all know they wouldn’t fire an actual coach in season so… punt?
Yairo hit it ok but Wong was totally overmatched after the ump called the 4″ outside strike. Garcia in to pinch hit. Can he get it to Carp?
