Also, in the “that escalated quickly” department…Matt Carpenter is tied with Jose Martinez for 11th in the NL in OPS. Considering his OPS was in the .400s in early May, that’s pretty good. (Unfortunately for the Cards, Tommy Pham has gone the opposite way with his OPS all the way down to .752)
We should just go ahead and keep doing that thing where we score far more runs than the other team a lot more this season. I blame Matheny for not thinking of this strategy sooner.
Kluber gave up 4 runs two starts ago, and has given up 3 runs four times this year. That would be about the best we can hope for tonight. Ha
I would prefer Garcia in there, and maybe even Fowler…but if Kluber is on, you could have a lineup of anyone short of 8 Mike Trouts and you wouldn’t score many runs.

That’s a good story, Derek. It would indeed be cool for these two to end up in St Louis one day. Knizner seems almost like a catching version of Paul Dejong but with the hit tool standing out more than the power. Maybe he’ll be a surprise above average regular one day.
The description of Mendoza has some excitement to it. Plus defense and slightly above average hitting at 3B would be a great future for him, if he can manage it. He’s had some dominant showings at two levels and less so at the others, although he is up to a 103 wRC+ at Springfield.
I like both of these guys as top 10 Cards prospects and maybe edging into the top 100 overall in the next year if they keep working hard and developing.
When did Casadilla get promoted? I hadn’t seen the article, I guess. Good for him. He’s been solid at every level save for last year.
Wacha being out a few weeks may actually help him. He usually struggles as his inning count rises and they have to give him a start off or two.
The issue with this rotation is that Flaherty and Weaver are both probably also innings limited this year. They’re gonna need Gant, Poncedeleon, Hudson, Waino…someone…to pick up some starts as the season wears on.
I agree, with the caveat that their stuff is similar as ground ball pitchers who have good (mostly not elite) bat missing skills. Kluber has consistently done what Cmart has done only in stretches, but I don’t believe that on a game to game basis, the top end is vastly different. That’s what I was getting at.
Before Carlos’ lat injury, this would have been a marquee matchup of aces. Carlos at his best isn’t quite Kluber at his, but he’s not far off. Of course, we all know that Cmart hasn’t been himself of late. Perhaps the tough opponent will help him to focus and he’ll pitch a good solid game.
On offense, Kluber may be licking his chops with all the Ks of late. Looking at league stats though, the Cardinals are “only” 15th in the league in total strikeouts, right about at league average.
Good win for the Birds. It’s always good to get the first game of the series. Good pitching, defense and enough offense without a homer to beat a quality team. Gant’s peripherals have been good so far; that crazy LOB% had to get better though.
Just checking Gameday…lots of sharp line drives for the Cards tonight. Good hitting by Ozuna there.

Good start to the game for Gant. Of course, he usually is good at the start of the game.
I hope our manager is better at timing when to pull a pitcher than when to sac bunt a runner on 2nd with no outs.
Did Garcia bunt? That seems a bit desperate. Turns out that the Ozuna single may have scored Marp if he had been on second base besides in the dugout.
Marp is really swinging the bat well since that atrocious start. He was running a 165 wRC+ since May 12 coming into tonight. Now if only we could get Pham, Ozuna, and one of Fowler or Wong going and get Dejong back…this offense could go somewhere.

Looks like Gant got through the first. Oddly, he either threw all strikes or all balls to every hitter.
Saving at bats for when he replaces the traded Dexter Fowler and hits .300/.370/.550 for the rest of the season and “devil magic” fury abounds among other NL fans and writers.
Pugs, our interleague record against the Indians is 8-15. The Cards have only been worse against the Tigers (11-21), Yankees (3-9) and ironically, the Rangers (2-7).
Here’s a fun fact for a rain delay…since 2000, the Cards have a winning record against every NL opponent except the SF Giants (56-59). They have losing records against 5 interleague foes… the aforementioned quartet plus the Minnesota Twins.
Jager, you said a couple days ago that Beltre would be cheaper then anyone on the market, and then you want to trade Carson Kelly for him? Unless by Kelly you mean Parker. That’s a risk I might take for two months of a 39 year old. There’s no chance I would ever give up one of our top 20, maybe even 30 for Beltre.
Tough spot for Gant, but he has looked good in spurts this year. He usually falters as he gets to that last inning or two.
I’m sure this is a new starter for the Cards. Hopefully the scouts have done their homework and the lineup can score some runs early to settle things down.
Brebbia comes in and Ks two in a row…gets Sogard to fly out and there’s your split. That was a nice, enjoyable game. Now let’s cool off the Indians!
Cecil in…and he gets a grounder, a pop-up and a K to lower his own ERA a touch. Can you sense the bullpen getting a little bit more confidence? It’d be great to have Holland and Cecil pitch like they have the last few outings.
