Gant would have been pretty useful to have yesterday, although the bullpen acquitted itself nicely. Perhaps he’s going to be ready to fill in this weekend if a Cards starter falters?
If Wacha is to miss any starts, I would like to see Poncedeleon given a chance. Let’s see what he can do. Gant has been mediocre as a starter. I think he’d better as a long man/ spot starter.
Why can’t the team just announce the grade of the strain? Of course, the vague wording leaves more wiggle room.
Poncedeleon pitched only 3 innings last night. I hope it was not due to injury. IN fact, maybe that would allow him to be available for a few innings Monday.
Just tell us the grade, Cardinals…

That performance by Gant last night and with the way Hudson is pitching at Memphis, it may lessen the Wacha loss just a little.
Wacha being out a few weeks may actually help him. He usually struggles as his inning count rises and they have to give him a start off or two.
The issue with this rotation is that Flaherty and Weaver are both probably also innings limited this year. They’re gonna need Gant, Poncedeleon, Hudson, Waino…someone…to pick up some starts as the season wears on.
I think that we’ll be seeing plenty of Gant even when Wacha is back. He has MLB experience plus Hudson is not on the 40 man roster. He’ll have to do better than his four mediocre starts in May to gain some traction. He’s probably a better choice than Ponce at this point.

Random observation: Based on last season, some determined Michael Wacha should not face any lineup a third time. In 2018, his lowest BA against (.203), OBP (.274) and OPS (.639) are for the third time through the order (85 PAs), though his BABIP then is just. 203.

Will Wacha get any rehab in the minors? It is looking doubtful. I guess he will be in the bullpen September 1st along with Wainright, Leone and Martinez.

Not looking good if Wacha has not pitched since 8/18 at Palm Beach, and even then he only threw 2/3 of an ineffective inning. Maybe he is put on the 60 day DL?
Wacha is pitching on a starter’s schedule – every fifth day. He is starting on plan for Palm Beach tonight.
Wacha is starting Tuesday for Springfield then the plan is apparently for him to rejoin the St. Louis rotation.

Having to take Wacha out of the game in Springfield is not a hopeful sign. Do the Card’s shelf him for ’18?
Difficult to know until there’s more info on the reason he came out… he was pitching poorly last night and it was AA. My guess is they close him down… trainers on the mound is never a good thing. At this point, if he stays active in ’18, is he going to provide more for the rotation than Poncedeleon? Healthy, yes. Wounded, no.There’s also the possibility that, with the injuries to our starters, we see Wainwright starting or if the organization does an about face and allows Hudson to get some starts.
