Great observation, Grays! We all know of a certain RedSox pitcher-Yankee slugger from yesteryear who made a pretty good name for himself and was not exactly as buff as a buffalo.
Much better! Not to beat a dead horse, but that 6-7 duo (Fowler-Pena)from last night was just begging to result in one run in 10 innings. Kid Carson should bang out not one…..but two hits today.
I think Fowler still had some gas in the tank last year, resulting in him playing well for part of the year. But with some players, and I suspect Fowler to possibly be one, once that gas runs out, the will to replenish it all but evaporates. Again, I do not believe a player like Fowler intentionally does not do what he has to, to perform at this level. He simply can’t help it….it just genetically happens.
Certainly there are a myriad of reasons of why or how players go into a steep decline before Father Time says they should. But what is the #1 reason? I would say it differs greatly from players of 50+ years ago. I think the major culprit today is players who lose that competitive edge due to excess comfort in life. This usually is not done on purpose….it just happens to players possessing certain engrained personality traits. I bet one day trained professionals will be able to easily identify these individuals, thus keeping these players from becoming complacent. Not saying this is necessarily the case with our batch ( Fowler, Carpenter, Wong and maybe even Ozuna ) of underachieving performers.

Just as the North Korean leader prepares to extinguish his country’s nuclear capabilities, our Cards should do likewise with it’s now controversial Fowler Experiment. Enough is enough. By all accounts, Dexter is a very fine gentleman. Why continue to embarrass him by trotting him out there every day? The big contract will have to be ate, but why compound matters by continuing to play him to the detriment of his 24 teammates and throngs of fans? Let him go, Mo…….let him go.
Why isn’t Gyorko hitting 3rd? Flip flop Jedd with Martinez. Boy that bottom half of our lineup sure isn’t going to create any sweat on the opposing pitcher’s brow…..especially #’s 6 & 7. But our top half should get it done. I’m calling this one 5-3 Birds with Tommy P. jerking one into the seats.
A belated congrats to 20 year old Juan “Pez” Yepez for his recent promotion to Palm Beach. Pez is off to a rather pedestrian 1-16 start with his new club, but keep an eye on him….because the young fellow can absolutely rake! A stern warning to all FSL pitchers……Pez is poised to explode!
Now Gregerson balls in a run making it 9-5. These Pads may end up having to show us a little mercy if this continues.
Gregerson on in a mop up role…. and he promptly gives up a solo Jack to right to Jankowski. 9-4 ballgame now.
Barring not one, but two broken legs, I want to see Gyorko trotting out to his position in the 1st inning of every game for the rest of the season.
Thanks for the article, Cardinals2016! It’s obvious that you’re a man who knows how to get things…and get them quickly. Pretty neat that Harrison Bader’s father has the first name “Louis”. As big a baseball fan that he appears, I’m surprised Harrison wasn’t christened with the first name “St.”.
Never heard that about Bader’s father purposely plunking him as a kid to get him big league ready. Great stuff! Hope Bader’s dad isn’t presently on vacation in China is he? I thought I read somewhere that he is a zookeeper.
Indeed sad, Cardinals2016. 9-3 now, so we need to hit the Pads with at least 4 runs in the 8th to see at least 3 of our hitters get a little bunting practice in during the 9th frame. Would have loved to seen that 10 run lead after 6, so we could have gone completely thru the order.
Sweet clarification of the “MR” (Mercy Rule), Cardinals2016. I’m bullish as all get out on Bader. You just know he’s going to start hitting. Couple that with his sparkling D and the intangibles and we’ve got ourselves a true blue-chipper. You win with players like a Bader….plain and simple.
It sure does, Cardinals2016. You have to have a 10 run lead….not 9. We are getting mighty close here at 9-zip.
I like your style, Cardinals2016. When ever you are ready to team up for a West coast game, give me a holler and we will book it.
To a man, I think we all have contemplated what we would do if we were managing a team and our boys were administering a major league arse-kicking on our opponent. I would consider a double digit lead heading to the 7th inning as one of those glorious occasions where you would literally call off the dogs. At this point, I would choose not to continue embarrassing the opposition. Running up the score is not a very classy thing to do and can actually work against you down the road when you play them again. So, from the 7th inning on, I would have each and every batter get a little bunting practice in by trying to lay one down. The only exception to this mercy rule being if you were pummeling the daylights out of the cubbies . Then as the Cardinals skipper you would have no choice but to keep lambasting the heck out of them.

Sweet! Past 2 days i have been unable to post. After hitting the “submit” button, my posts have been getting highlighted in a soft pink hue with words something like “sorry we are presently unable to receive your post”…. those were not the exact words, but something like that. Anybody else experiencing the same thing? If I didn’t know Brian better I’d think he was intentionally toying with me, as the same thing occurred a couple weeks ago.
I am not totally onboard with the Wong-love I’m sensing of late. We’ve seen this act before out of our 2nd baseman. He strings a few decent games together and we all get excited that he’s finally figuring things out. The model of positive consistency he’s not. Hope I’m wrong. But right now I just want to pluck Schrock right out of our Memphis nest and get him up here where he belongs. There’s no shame in admitting you made a mistake on the Wong contact, Mo………it happens.
Never a pleasant experience to get swept….especially on your home field….and to a sub .500 club….and to a team who recently got manhandled at home to the lowly Redlegs. But on the other hand, these Twins have now won their last 5 games…. all on the road….and by a combined score of 32-12. Though not beneficial in the standings, maybe these past two games will not be a total loss in that it will serve our younger players well down the road. It’s hard to believe players taking any team lightly at this level….wait a second….until this year that is. If I may, I would like to submit into evidence the 2018 Cincinnati Reds as the exception to this rule. It is perfectly acceptable for any player( from Cincinnati too ), coach, administrator, media person or fan, to NOT take this year’s Reds squad seriously.
