Brady whalen making a pretty strong early case for player of the month in august.
To the tune of 1.243 ops before today and he is 1-2 with a walk and homer today.
Nice to see. With his walk rate he could look pretty solid end of year if he finishes hot like this.

Up or down less than .05 is IMO nearly statistically meaningless (random factors). .1 or higher and you may or may not be looking at long term significance. It depends on a lot of factors.

Good to see us winning. Been around to know this will slow down at somw point… But we could get some september or late August help and make a run.
Still think extremely long odds to win it all — too inconsistent and even our good horses are half broken most of the time. But this should tell just about anyone some good things.

I know I go on about gomber sometimes… But helsley is another one of those guys who keeps slipping through the cracks.
Pretty crazily weird when a guy with an era under 2.75 at aa at barely 23 (and a month) and who can dial it up to the high-mid 90s might not break our top 10 pitching prospects.

All I was trying to get at with gomber was that he has been pretty good barring that first start. He is just a ho hum boring consistent guy
He is going to drop on our prospect list but he is still very solid.
The problem is your “argument” also says that he deserves no credit for his record.
“Look at the team he was handed”.
His teams have been very good.
If the manager both deserves no credit and deserves no blame he is an empty figurehead and should be fired on principle.
If you’re getting paid millions of dollars and add no value what the hell are you doing there?

First off I was relatively specific. This year’s team is underperforming majorly and I gave specifics that he has responsibility for.
Second I never said he was a horrible manager. I simply dont think he is a good one and I want a balanced perspective here.
He has not been good. I am not sold on whether or not he can be good.
Your mindless devotions to wins and losses when he was handed a way above average team that has regressed in ways that he obviously influences or controls is not productive.

I am the first person to admit that mo has screwed up the last year or so. I think he is a great gm who needs a perspective change.
However… That doesn’t excuse matheny. This team had enough talent to be much much better. It isn’t. Mass personnel failure is also on the manager — He is the one who motivates and teaches and this many abject failures is not acceptable.
The main issues with bad fundamentals and in game decisions are all him and have gotten progressively worse.
Is some of that the players? Yes.
Is all of it? Takes a vivid imagination to not notice a cultural problem. It is the managers job to fix that problem.
He hasnt. If anything it has gotten worse.
Trying to spin that with records when he was handed the best team in baseball is a bad spin job at best.

When things fall apart a few years after a great coach leaves you with a great roster there is usually reason beyond “the roster sucks now”.
The closest equivalent above was osborne who retired after winning 3 titles in four years and demolishing florida and tennessee in 95/96 and 97/98.
Five years later they were 7-7. Frank Solich was fired the year after due to the regression.
Larussa had his issues but matheny has some SERIOUS explaining to do about how a team with this much depth has sucked this badly. Maybe we will make a run against an easy schedule late but one thing is for sure — he hasnt righted the ship and has had ZERO answers to our issues.

Kelly and weaver being named best pitching prospect and best defensive catcher is IMPRESSIVE.

Everyone loves stubby clapp… I am a bit worried that they might fire matheny and hire him. No real reason just seems like something they would do for a lot of reasons.
We have a very light schedule for a while… Regardless of any feelings about the deadline I think we could make a run for a while

We have a glut of decent bullpen arms and a ton of young arms that can fill that gap within 2 years. As in… Somewhere around TEN more arms within two years. Maybe fifteen. Yes some are starters but still not all are or will be.
It is an absurd number… And in a tight pitching market in a down year we didnt take advantage.
It is stupid. There really is no other word for it.

I dont see how we don’t deal some players. But then I didnt see us only dealing one pitcher at the deadline either.
We simply have too many random parts and a lot of them are pitchers.
When you have that as your 7th 8th or 9th starter you know something is going right.

Personally? Mercado has to be protected. Plus (probably plus plus given he shoved sierra into left) cf defense with acceptable bat. Age appropriate level.
Montgomery sherrif and ellis all depend on who we deal out of the pen.
Seferina was a little old for Palm beach… But not outrageously and he is hitting in springfield where he is NOT too old. Bit of a tweener for this debate but someone might see value especially if he hits in the afl (not sure if he is going). My guess is protect him at aaa and we should be able to keep him.
Below that im not so worried.
If pearce needs to be protected or put into the bullpen we will probably lose him given our current backlog and that reyes will also be there next year.
Whoever thought holding onto virtually all our arms at the deadline was smart in the organization is a moron.
