WHIP is a very good indication of a pitcher’s long-term success, along with progressing up the organization.

This plus several other factors should rearrange the Prospects List… for some rankers. Some will still go with the subjectable “potential”.

Up or down less than .05 is IMO nearly statistically meaningless (random factors). .1 or higher and you may or may not be looking at long term significance. It depends on a lot of factors.

If you go deeper in the stats Alcantara has six consecutive quality starts, 36.2 innings, 29 hits, 6 earned runs, 21 bb (ouch) and 25 ks. He is a model for the Cardinal philosophy in developing prospects. Challenge them with a level above their current development, give them around a half season to catch up.

Gallen, Helsley, and Hicks seem to be making a mark among the second tier guys.
