How in the heck does he go 1B to HP to tie this game on a sigle? Someone fell asleep.

The Redbird 2B’man got caught flat footed after receiving the cutoff. The young player hesitated.

Yeah that runner pulled an Enos Slaughter move.

He sure did. Things move fast in the Big Leagues. Hopefully the young 2B’man learned a thing or two in the home half the 9th.

Every season I forget about the make believe tooth fairy baserunner in extras.

Didn’t look like Walker played that foul ball very well. Hard to tell exactly, but it looked like the ball was past his glove as he reached up – like he did not see it and sort of guessed where it was.

Who the hell decided that Stanek is the closer? Look up his stats for the past 4 years.

He’s never been a closer and his era isn’t good.

What in the world was Oli thinking when he brought in Stanek to close the game? Stanek was just as bad yesterday. Release him. Memphis has a pretty good bullpen.

These Cardinals are shaky but scrappy. This season looks like it is going to require a lot of Mylanta but hey we are 2-0 and go for the sweep tomorrow against Steven Matz.

I believe the phrase “closer by committee” was used by Oli. It’s early but the results from the bullpen have been very shaky so far.

That was pretty exciting stuff, but frankly I would have felt better with a 4-0

    Romero has to close.

Svanson has been unlucky more than bad.

Stanek? He’s not been good for 4 years – why did Chaim think that’s going to change?

Walker may be taking slightly better at bats but – he just does not need to be in StL right now.

    Gorman does actually look better.

Stanek undeservedly ended up with McGreevy’s win.

Romero and O’Brien should get the 8th and 9th.

Stanek is a mop up guy.

I have never felt since Marmol has been here that he has a good understanding of his bullpen. With both how to use it and personnel. Not sure Svanson is a guy I would want in the 9th b/c of the # of people he lets on base by hit or walk, don’t care if it is a 4 to 6 run lead.

Stanek is going to give fans a heart attack with his pitching unless the 1st 2 games are an aberration.

Got to think Roycroft, Bruhil and now Svanson are on a short leash, as I think those 3 are easily replaced with (Gastelum/Raquet/Graceffo) from Memphis

Big hit by Weatherholt to win it and overcome an awful bullpen outing.

Tough break for McGreevy … no hits allowed thru 6 is strong as he faced a lot of lefty hitters.

Interesting game. So far the season has gone as expected with plenty of thrills, spills, and chills!
Nice seeing our rookie phenom (can I call him that) off to a good start!

    What a debut for McGreevy!

    As for the StL manager….well, here’s a side-by-side comparison:

JoJo Romero 2025 2.07 ERA in 61 innings. Stanek 5.30 in 56 innings.
In 2024 it was Romero 3.36 across 59 IP versus Stanek 4.88 in 55 innings.

The last time the 34-year-old Stanek was good enough to be a major league closer was four years ago. Which, coincidentally is the last time Romero was NOT good enough for that particular responsibility. The manager was apparently bewitched by Stanek’s five good innings in Spring Training.

It was actually Winn who received that cutoff throw. Throw was a little low but Winn didn’t get a good transfer and seemed like he didn’t expect the runner to go home

I believe Stanek as closer is a business move – not necessarily a manager move. If the team is going to sell him at the deadline anyway, they want to market him as having closer experience because it raises his value. If he continues to struggle though, he will either be released or relegated to unimportant innings. While it may be Ollie’s ultimate decision to pitch Stanek, my guess is there is/was strong encouragement to get him closer experience.

I predicted a step back from the bullpen. Like I said Thursday, 3-4 of these guys in the pen now are simply placeholders until our next men up are fully ready.

Agree 100%. Just glad we didn’t move JoJo.
