LACardFan – Thanks for posting that link on Bernal. I’m not a subscriber, but I didn’t get blocked by a pay wall. One thing that doesn’t get mentioned enough about Yadi is that opposing teams cut way down on their stealing attempts with Yadi behind the plate. And he still caught 40% of base stealers. Yadi was well respected throughout the game.
I’m still not sure what we’ve got with Saggese. But I could say the same about Davis and Hjerpe. There have been questions about Saggese’s defense, but nobody is talking about that being a problem any more. Saggese had that AA MVP award in 2023, and his offense improved a lot during the second half of this past season which suggests that 2024 might have been something of an off year for Thomas Saggese. We’ll see.

Sorry for posting before the close of #5. I knew most people would have already voted before I got off work and settled, so I posted my thoughts before I had work to see if it could sway anyone.
In regards to Saggase’s defense, he had some nice plays, but he looked just ok overall to me. I also see most scouts as having as a 45 as well, so slightly below average.

stl25 is the most organized person I have ever seen when it comes to doing these annual rankings, but considering how antsy everyone is with their voting and comments, perhaps in the future we consider not having a two or three day gap in between votes.
Last year I did roughly 36 hour intervals. That may have been a touch fast for some. I’m ok with the current plan. It’s just that there is a big gap between Thursday and Sunday. Maybe we should have just went with every other day even if that would have made the closing days become a moving target.
The good news is that the plan has us finishing by year end around the time Brian is doing his own list.
In many years, we get extra folks trickling in when they see that we have a running vote. This year so far we haven’t seemed to. Votes for single places tend to end up herding together but hopefully there will be some more excitement when we get to spots where there is less consensus.
Also, my #6 is Cooper Hjerpe. I think he’s got the stuff to make an impact, even if it may only be as a reliever. I’m still not totally convinced that he won’t make it as a starter. Saggese is more a utility guy for me but I see the appeal.
I don’t think we’re looking at a utility player here in the person of Thomas Saggese. We all recall how offensively challenged Winn was in his first year of play in the bigs. If I don’t say so myself, over the years I’ve been pretty fair at predicting what kind of careers young players are going to end up having…….and when I think of this, I cannot help thinking of the player whom I totally missed on…..and there haven’t been many. Steven Hill…….to this day I don’t know what derailed his career? Anyway, think Richie ( don’t call me “Dick” ) Zisk……..Saggese is offensively going to end up with very similar numbers to this ex-Pirate. He’s a keeper, gang.
Saggese’s walk rate cratered at AAA which is what gives me the most pause. I think he’s done well in the AFL on that front with a 1:1 BB:K ratio
A prospect playing an up the middle position, C, SS, 2B, CF, needs to be strong defensively. A standout level player will be clearly above average defensively. So his offense vs advanced pitching is not the only question mark.
I think everyone has weighed in now so instead of calling this a few minutes late like last week, I’m going to call it a couple hours early. Saggese is our number 6 prospect.

I’m going with Hjerpe. I have tons of fear that he doesn’t stay healthy enough to have a good career. He is consistently dominant when he does pitch though as his funky delivery and movement gives hitters fits. He’s a near sure thing if he can stay healthy.

Last I knew, FB sits 95 hits 98, secondaries good but need continued development.
With a BB/9 of 2.8 in low A you don’t need video to figure he is not one of those lanky live arm types peppering the backstop with whiffle ball stuff. There is some video and I posted one of many I have saved. You can see he does not come straight over the top, so doesn’t get the downhill he might. Almost looks kind of short arm, which is odd considering how long his arms are. Not a sure thing, IMO, but I like the potential, and have him above guys who have had arm trouble. It is worth mentioning that he didn’t get an in season promotion last year, but he could do well in High A and be in AA at some point in 2025.
