Would any of you be ok with us giving that same deal to Holland? Maybe a team option on the 4th year rather than a vesting one?

Martinez is the big question mark here as well. Is his bat for real? Is his defense that atrocious? If Fowler isn’t playing next to him, does his defense improve with the better range of Pham/Grichuk/Ozuna manning CF?

Martinez and Bader crush LH pitching, which make them good options for giving the starters days off, platooning, and pinch-hitting, but not as longer-term injury-replacements or regular starters.

I also don’t think Grichuk’s full AAA numbers after getting sent down in 2016 and 2017 should be compared to O’Neill at his point in his career.

I’m not particularly fond of Bader or O’Neill starting the year in the majors either, but I do think they are ready, if not extremely close.

The one big conclusion we can make from everything mentioned here is that the downgrade from Grichuk to either Bader or O’Neill is not very large and especially won’t be two-three months into the year. Grichuk loses a lot of value if he’s used as a 4th outfielder. He can be marketed right now as a potential starter or platoon partner.

Further, why do you think Grichuk would get more than three to five plate appearances per week, but the prospects wouldn’t? Or maybe I misunderstood. Heck, Bader got 90 PAs in two months in the majors in 2017, which is more than double that 5 PAs per week.

Where did you get your numbers?

Tyler O’Neill had a 27.3% K-rate in AAA-Tacoma and a 26.7% K-rate for AAA-Memphis, then a 15.4% K-rate in the playoffs. Total K-rate of 26.1% (missing, however, is his BB-rate of 9.5% which makes the K-rate okay imo, unlike for someone like Grichuk or DeJong.

Brian – This comment “None of the Triple-A guys are clearly ready yet.” doesn’t really apply to Bader or O’Neill in my opinion.

Bader had a full year of AAA (after 160 PAs in AAA last year) and got more than a cup-of-coffee of playing time in STL this summer (90 PAs). Similarly, O’Neill got 600+ AAA PAs last year. I don’t see either having anything left to prove, although ideally both would begin the year in AAA. Trading Grichuk or Bader makes sense.

C16 – Another aspect of your point is that perhaps the way that Grichuk and Piscotty ended up developing is just another reason why Fowler was signed. Fowler gave the team an above-average player to bridge the gap for our prospects and allow them to break in slowly and shift away from Grichuk and Piscotty after they failed to live up to expectations.

Speaking of, Piscotty was compensation for Pujols so now the Pujols legacy will include both Schrock and Munoz (in addition to Wacha) in value added after he signed with the Angels. Hopefully, one of the two ends up being pretty good.

Ah, I see two of the trades we made included LH hitting players – Schrock hits LH and JB Woodman also does.

A dark-horse candidate would be Jordan Schafer too. We could always sign someone like Granderson if we traded Grichuk away too. I really would like them to trade Bader as well. I think his value will never be higher and he doesn’t have a place on the team. (not for nothing though, a similarly ranked prospect at a different position)

So is Jordan Schafer the only upper minors LH bat that we have (and Edman ~ Switch-hitter)

Pads, you pulled comments from two different posts that really aren’t related.

I never stated that the Cards had pandered nor do they have any reason to.

I’m not sure what your point is regarding the other six teams mentioned. Yes, they kept going for it when they shouldn’t have.

14NyquisT responded to your six teams post with the post about the Cardinals pandering to fans. I was responding to him and agreeing with you.

    O’Neill is a RH hitter.

That changes things. I guess I wrote it down wrong after the trade and never corrected it. That does hurt depth-wise.

One way this could work is trading Grichuk even too. Martinez would become the backup outfielder with Fowler, Pham, and Ozuna all capable of playing centerfield.

Then Gyorko becomes the primary backup at 1B, 2B, and 3B.

Well, the Cubs drafted Alex Lange with the Fowler pick. He’d probably be on the cusp of the top 10. We lost the pick around where the Tigers drafted Alex Faedo and the Mets got David Peterson. I think all three would be on that cusp of the top 10, likely ahead of the Gallen, Helsley, Gomber trio, but below the Hudson, Alcantara, Hicks group.

Then again, if we held onto the pick, MLB could’ve taken that one and left us 2nd and 3rd round picks.

Right now, I still think they have $29.4M to spend for 2018. They are at $145.6M and should be able to go to $175.0M, or at least get to $158.7M, which leaves $13.1M to spend.

Note: $175M comes from Goold saying that that’s the internal budget that the payroll can go to, while $158M is 5% over last years’ payroll, which is how much they’ve been increasing payroll since 2005.

Just wondering…. so Gyorko will not be as good in ’18…. but there seems to be no doubt that JMartinez will be as good if not better. Hmmm. I’m not buying into these crystal ball theories based on nothingness.

I don’t get this theory either.

However, JMart, used exclusively in a platoon, would be likely to hold value. Gyorko seems to get exposed as he plays more and no one is advocating putting him in a platoon. Also, a lot of Gyorko’s WAR was tied up in his defense at 3B, that is probably above-average, but not top-five in the league good, as the data suggests in 2016 and 2017.

You really can’t beat a guy that puts up exact 112 wRC+ figures two years in a row. I just see 3B as a really strong place to improve our team, much like RF.

Our 1B production was 5th best in all of baseball and we are bringing back the three main headliners. Meanwhile, 3B production was 17th best in baseball. Garcia and Mejia just played too much there (300 innings combined)

Tyler O’Neill seems like fine depth in the LH hitting department. Carpenter should play 1B every single game against a RH pitcher. I don’t see a lot of value there, which is probably why Adams never played.

If they want to upgrade at SS or 3B and can find a LH hitter, then that is different imo.

I think there would be very few fans that would want a tear-down after winning 83 games last year (3-year 90 win average) There is a lot of talent here and much more on the cusp that can be used to improve the team going forward, IE, getting someone like Donaldson. We also don’t have a lot of high-end talent that is close to FA and worth trading, like a Donaldson. I think everyone agrees that a slugger (Ozuna), a starter (Mikolas), and a closer would fix most of our teams’ issues …. along with a second slugger ~ Donaldson, another ace ~ Archer, and another flamethrower, haha.

Perhaps trading Lynn would have been a smart move, but it would have been un-wise to give up on a season, when we were tied for 1st at the time.

Off the topic a bit… the Cardinal’s FO is pretty high up there when it comes to pandering to fans.
    Tsk,tsk.tsk.

The Cardinals haven’t had a losing season in 10 years and that was the only season this century.

All these teams have had losing seasons…and still went for it the following season:

The Phillies held onto their core for too long.
    The Tigers did it.
    The Royals did it.
    The Giants are doing it.
    The Orioles are doing it.
The Blue Jays are doing it.

Yes, I think that’s what I mean as well. The Jays seem to be pandering to fans rather than putting the long-term health of the roster as their primary concern, just like the Royals last year. Re-tooling should involve some actually roster turnover.

The Jays have been acquiring talent at the expense of their farm system since 2013 when they traded Syndergaard and d’Arnaud to the Mets for RA Dickey. The Reyes/Buerhle trade cleared out DeSclafani, Hechavarria, and Marisnick, the Donaldson trade cost them Barretto, the Tulo trade cost them Hoffman, the Price trade cost them Norris. (Imagine Stroman, Sanchez, Syndergaard, Hoffman, and Norris all in one rotation…jeez)

I’m not advocating for the Jays to do a complete rebuild, but to trade their 2018 guys for players with more control. Guys like Donaldson, Smoak, and Happ would be great trade candidates, while Osuna wouldn’t be needed for 2018 realistically. It makes sense to plug some players in that will fill your 2018 holes and shore up for a 2019 run.

Cardinals27 – If we open with Martinez, Wacha, Wainwright, Mikolas, and Weaver….wouldn’t Flaherty be the sixth starter?

Then Reyes is seventh, and everyone else falls in line behind that. That’s a lot of depth even for a questionable, health-wise, rotation.

Aren’t the Cubs always among the top of the attendance charts, even when they are losing? Attendance shouldn’t drive decisions to compete in any way, shape, or form.

The ability to put a complete team on the field that can compete should be the driving factor.

The Reds are the perfect example of this. In 2013, with Choo, they still kept their core together and got to 90 wins. They had a young pitching staff and a solid offense so going for it again in 2014 made sense. However, they struggled to just 76 wins and fourth place. Then, in 2015, due to “attendance reasons”, they half-went for it instead of trading valuable assets and were awful anyway, but also cost themselves a year of development and watched their assets decline precipitously (Chapman, Bruce, Frazier, Cueto, and Leake)

    Cardinals2016

    1. The Blue Jays are owned by Rogers Communications, who may be selling the team
    2. In 2016 & 2017, they drew more than 3.2 million fans. Up from 1.8 million fans as recently as 2011.

That is called profit maximization. They got there by putting a winning product on the field.

We have a lot of decent ML-worthy depth pieces to suit the Jays’ needs. If they want to put a winning product on the field, They can upgrade at all three outfield positions – Pearce, Hernandez, Pillar, and Carrera are not good overall. Travis and Tulo (Diaz backing them up) is not optimal with their injury history.

If we traded them Gyorko and Grichuk, that would shore up one OF spot with a decent player that would certainly give them stability. It would fix 3B in the short-term until Guerrero is ready and then Gyorko can shift to 2B in 2019 if Travis stays injured or Bichette doesn’t come up right away or they need him at SS. Or he could play 1B for them when Smoak leaves as an FA. We would almost certainly have to add a pitcher and Dakota Hudson looks like the perfect fit as he is not really needed for our squad and he would give them innings if needed so they aren’t relying on Biagini all year.

If Hudson is “too much” then perhaps Gomber or Helsley would fit the bill. They would save almost $13.0M to spend on a FA to bolster their rotation or outfield even further as well.

It wont he’s been downward trending for years. Might stay the same though. he needs to hit a lot more to be valuable in left.

Fowler’s defense per fangraphs, last six years:
    2012: -12 DRS, -13.6 UZR (Coors)
    2013: -4 DRS, -1.9 UZR (Coors)
    2014: -20 DRS, -21.8 UZR (Minute Maid)
    2015: -12 DRS, -1.7 UZR (Wrigley)
    2016: +1 DRS, +1.0 UZR (Wrigley)
    2017: -18 DRS, -5.9 UZR (Busch)

Can you explain how that’s a “downward trend for years”.

    Fowler wRC+ in 2017: 121 (128 in 2016)

A 121 wRC+ would be 9th best in baseball for a LFer last year. Of course, that would be behind Pham and Ozuna too, so Fowler would be 7th best technically. He’s behind Pham (a CFer now), Gonzalez, Ozuna (a RFer now), Bellinger (a 1Bman now), Upton, Davis, Reddick, and Taylor (a CFer now) One of Gonzalez and Reddick will drop off the list too. Although Stanton will likely shift over to LF, so he could potentially be the fifth best hitting LFer in the game.

Duke has a good shot at making good on that contract. If we didn’t have Lyons and Cecil, I would have liked to bring Duke back.

I want nothing to do with Barraclough. I can’t believe he has lasted this long in the majors.
