The top of the Roster Matrix currently (morning of 08/18) says “40+7”, but I think there are currently only 46 players under major-league contracts: 26 active roster + 3 on 10-day IL + 11 on optional assignment + 6 on 60-day IL. I am also only seeing 46 players with their name in bold. Is this just about waiting for Hurst to clear waivers (or not)?
With Johan Quezada moving from Springfield’s COVID injured list to the 60-day IL, what is his new “available” date?
Brian,
Today (07/05) Memphis is showing 31+4, but I believe that roster is 32+3 with only Austin Dean, Alex FaGalde, and Johan Quezada on the IL.
Unrelated follow-up question: when does the DSL start? I’m seeing conflicting reports.
Thanks as always,
JoeGlad to help. Thanks for maintaining this outstanding resource.
-JoeThe Roster Matrix currently (06/18) shows IF Darlyn Del Villar in both Palm Beach and the Complex. The narrative has him in Palm Beach. The Complex total shows 34 but I believe it should be 37 (38 names are listed, including Del Villar).
Brian, thanks so much for these responses!
I wanted to get a little more clarity about nos. 5 and 6. If I remember correctly, during the 2019 MiLB season the full-season leagues (so our teams Memphis, Springfield, Palm Beach, and Peoria) had 25-man active rosters, but players moved to the 7-day injured list or restricted lists for these teams did not count against that number. The short-season and rookie leagues (so our teams State College, Johnson City, GCL Cardinals, and DSL Cardinals Blue and Red) had 35-man active rosters, also not counting injured/restricted players.
How will the new 180-man rule work with injured players? If the franchise is permitted to have 180 players on the Memphis, Springfield, Peoria, Palm Beach, and GCL teams, that averages to 36 players each! Is the idea that they don’t want each team releasing a ton of players on account of the reduction in number of teams; just cram more guys into the remaining dugouts?
Will Sunday’s game be on television or not?
Are Blake and Capel sharing #90?
Do we know when we will know the broadcast schedule?
Thank you!
The Roster Matrix lists 10 unsigned minor-league free agents after the 11/01/2020 additions, but should Ryan Meisinger be added as an 11th? I wasn’t clear exactly what happened with him at the end of the postseason. It looked like he declared free agency after being outrighted.
Thanks, Brian! Could we see a bigger-than-usual taxi squad since they won’t want to bring new people into the bubble, or will it remain three?
What are the postseason roster mechanics this year? I’m guessing it’s a set 28-man roster for each series, but with some sort of taxi squad? Is the 60-man pool over with now?
-JoeThe 09/22 transactions of Hudson to the 45-day IL and Whitley to the 28-man active roster have finally reduced the 40-man roster to… well… forty men… but it seems that the 60-man player pool is still at 61, right? 28 active + 32 at alternate camp + 1 (Dean) on 10-day IL = 61. Maybe somebody left the Springfield camp when Whitley was activated?
-JoeBrian, thanks as always for your very thoughtful and informative answers. In this confusing time especially, it is great to have a resource who can help people who want to follow the mechanics of the game this closely.
-JoeIs Ricardo Sánchez currently on the IL or part of the Springfield Camp roster? I guess I’m unclear how the injured lists work in conjunction with an ongoing camp.
-JoeThanks for the quick response, and the one I hoped!
-JoeWith 59 currently in the 60-player pool, does that create an availability, or is Hick’s spot considered “burned” now?
-JoeHow does Hicks’ decision affect rosters — specifically, is a player who opts out due to COVID automatically removed from the team’s 40-man roster (like a player placed on the 45/60-day IL)? If so, I think this means we currently have 59 men in the 60-player pool, 47 in the Busch camp, and 38 on the 40-man roster, right?
-JoeI get your point.
Strange that he should reappear on Memphis’ website re-do after being removed. I will indeed do more research before posting here. I know there have been errors in the matrix in the past, and that you work hard to keep it as accurate as possible. I’ll do my due diligence more… diligently… before posting here.
Interesting, thank you. Another I just noticed is a catcher named Ryan McCarvel on the Springfield Cardinals website whom I haven’t seen in this matrix.
Thanks Brian, you’re right. I didn’t see the 3 international players added on 09/03, or notice that 5 players on the 40-Man were being included in the Memphis and Springfield totals. That fixes it!
-Joe
I need some help reconciling the current Roster Matrix (Sat morning 11/16). The organization total says 309, but if you add up the teams it looks like 311.
St. Louis 38
Memphis 27
Springfield 25
Palm Beach 27
Peoria 27
State College 29
Johnson City 29
GCL 28
DSL Blue 30
DSL Red 28
International Signed 23-Joe
Urías is back but now Chris Ellis looks to be missing from Memphis (should be at 23?).
-JoeIt looks like Ramón Urías disappeared from the matrix. I think Memphis has 27 on its roster right now…
