Burleson has got to be included as a surprise so far this season. Do not think many of us expected him to be pushing or leading the team in as many categories as he is. On a different matter: I saw where Pozo has K’d 4 whole times in like 70 ABs. That’s great bat to ball in anyone’s game. Of course he hasn’t seen a pitch he doesn’t like. Just fun to watch.

Got to take advantage of the losses of the Cubs and Reds. Why would Oli choose to sit Donovan? tried to find out and have not seen an explanation anywhere. Thnx guys, sure hope it was just for the DH.

If the Birds move Gray, does that leave a rotation of Mikolas and four ?????s. Asking for a friend!LOL.
My 75 yr old eyes tell me there is a world of difference in the approach of Burleson and Gorman. Burly says “OK let’s see what you got”. Gorman looks like a deer in the headlights with each at bat. There is a joy that comes with this wonderful game; Burly, Donovan,Winn, Contreras, Noot, and now Saggese seem to ooze that joy in the moment. The same goes for our pitching staff. Gray wants the ball, Pallante is having a good time when he takes the mound. Even Lynn seems to enjoy the challenge of the day (time has taken its toll though), even Libby says oK let’s go! My lineup for 2025 would be Contreras, Burly, Donovan, Winn,Arenado, Saggese,Siani, ????. SP-Gray,Pallante, Gibby, Matthews( if he shows well during ST), then a trade for a # 1 or 2 to pair with Gray. That gives us Gorman Walker,Scott Hence McGreevy, Gracceffo, Herrera, Crooks,Fermin,Baker, etc. as pretty decent trade offers. We do not seem to be able to develope these guys beyond a certain point, if we are sticking with the same coaches, we should change the chess pieces. Got to extend Helsey, at least til the trade deadline.Libby, Romero, King, and Fernadez gives you a fair BP. These leaves a spot or two for the bench and the same for the BP. What do you think?

Apologies on Taveras.
After Albert was picked in the 13th round the Cards took on the belief that they could operate on the theory that a great ballplayer could carry a team with the help of average to good supporting teammates. As Albert’s contract came to an end, Onteveras was the next in line. It seems to me that the front office got gun shy after that untimely incident. We took a shot with Ankiel,Drew, Hudson, etc.; we missed. Not that they were not good players, but they were not Pujols or Stan. McGuire, as good for the game as the contest with Sosa was at the time, could not carry the team to Championships. Just spitballing here, but is it more sound thinking to build a strong club and then enjoy that ‘generational talent’ when it comes along? It took the Javiers, Maxvells, McCarvers, Shannons, Floods, Brocks, etc. to build a team. Each a good ballplayer in their on right, but a dynamo as a unit. BDW spent $$$ on Arenado,Goldsmith, etc , but failed in surrounding them with that “dynamo”. Minor league hype does not translate to an Allstar. Our player development has fallen behind. Donovan, Edman, Siani, Burleson and countless others were not ‘hyped’ and yet they have been expected to carry this team. As a team, we have hit a rough patch, the question is where do we go from here? Championships are not easy, but a more than competive bunch of guys, that enjoy the game is not to much to ask as a fan. Sorry for the ramble guys.
Do not make a whole lot out of the new fangled stats used nowadays; that saying they have their place, I guess. Our wonderful game has always been a numbers puzzle. Concerning Burleson, my eyes tell me he is a hitter. He doesn’t give up at bats and puts the ball in play. Hie demeanor in the box is definitely that of a big leaguer. I like that versus a 40% K rate. 2d thought, looking for imput; appears to me that Arenado takes a lot of early pitches, putting him down 0-1, 0-2 before ever taking the bat off his shoulder. Betting on one swing per AB seems pretty slim odds. Thoughts?
July 22, 2024 at 8:00 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2024-2026 #261170According to the “talking heads” there doesn’t seem to be a pitcher we are not interested in acquiring. Fansided and some others believe the Mariners are needing a 2d baseman. We happen to have a 2d baseman who could provide some offensive pop toa relative weak hitting ball club. Where do the Cards stand if we trade Gorman and … for a pair of the Seattle pitchers? Possibly, Edman back to his natural position. OF backlog eased a bit, opening the door for MLB looksee at some of our AAA and AA guys. After seeing Albies’ freak injury yesterday, I realize you can’t see the future, but FO has got to step up.
July 21, 2024 at 10:14 am in reply to: StL 2024 Game #99 thread – Saturday, July 20 at Braves – Game 2 DH #26107714 hits; looks like the young ones carried the team again today. Mikolas going today with a full compliment available in the BP. Good shot at taking the series. Go Birds.
Not here to blast the FO, but… A very short time ago we had a GG 2d baseman; moved him to SS, necessary at the time. This allowed the Birds to take a utility player and fill the 2d base position. WOW another GG! “That worked so well, let’s put them both in the OF” Appears the lack of development of major league OFs has cost STL considerably. Both GGs got injured; one has not played for a good while. Who’s decision was that? Looks like the easy way out’ instead of how a top flight organization should plan. We’ve heard about the logjam at OF positions, where are they? We are developing SP,top of the line OF, strong bench, and contract mismanagement has created congestion at some of the other positions. Whether it’s the draft, the development,or contract decisions, it seems that we are resigned to mediocrity for a while. What is wrong with looking at how the successful teams are building their foundations? The Brewers do it with a smallef market; the Braves do it with development, the Astros who knows. The big market teams just throw $$$$ and go get what they need. When was the last time the Dodgers were cinsidered middlie of the road? They all have a plan. Do the Cardinals actually have a plan?
July 18, 2024 at 3:51 am in reply to: StL 2024 Game #98 thread – Fri, July 19 at Braves, PPD to Sat Game 1 #260757I’m an old guy; a Redbird fan for 65+ yrs. Have raised 6 kids that are baseball fans. Loved listening to Harry and Jack on the box every night. the “Cardinal Way” seemed to have worked for more than a few years, and I believe the old eye test is the best way to determine a ballplayer. The guys from th e late 50s, 60s, were players. Got to watch McGee in Nashville, along with Mattingly.. true baseball guys. The Brocks, Gibsons, Boyers, Reds, MUsials,Forschs,Carltons, etc. had an air about them from the get go. EDmonds,Ozzie,Rolen,White, just approached the game differently. Then there was Albert. How could so many overlook him? The Cards have had great teams; putting together those teams just didn’t happen. It took work. We have ballplayers on this team now, not necessarily HOFs but true to life ballplayers. Donovan, Edman, Contreras, possibly Burkeson,Siani. Their approach is just different! Arenado and Goldsmith have aged out to my eye, that happens. We as fans deserve the best the FO can offer. Not a Championship yearly but an exciting ballgame every day. That’s baseball. K’s and lack of hustle doesn’t bring rings or pennants. Thanks for the space to rant.
