So, here we go again. The tinkering.
I guess they did say they were going to go to a 6 man rotation but still…
ZTR, look at it this way. Mikolas pitches less frequently now. Unfortunately Sonny and the rest of the rotation pitch less frequently now as well.
They’ve tried this in the past. Matz has a tendency to be somewhat effective when entering a game and then working 2 or 3 innings while holding a comfortable lead. But if his circumstances are anything other than ideal, he seems to quickly spin a bearing and seize up. I hope he does good, but I’ve seen enough of him in the past to remain sceptical. We’ll see what happens.

I really laughed at this when it happened. Both me and Whitey Herdog were laughing!Manny Machado was at the plate in a 0-0 game in the 5th inning. The Cubs DROPPED two foul balls during his atbat. Yes, you read that right. Tucker dropped one down the RF line and then the 3rdbaseman dropped one in foul territory near home plate. Machado literally had three atbats during this one atbat. And then 2-3 pitches later – BOOM! A homerun and the Padres led 1-0. I know that’s hard to believe but the Cubs actually dropped two foul popups during Machado’s atbat.
Unfortunately the Cubs won 2-1 in 10 innings.

A real nice day for yardwork precluded watching the game, but a glance at the box tells me that Matz worked a real nice turn allowing only 1 run on 2 hits with 5 K’s and (what may be the key) 0 BB’s in 5 IP’ed. Looks like he did a real nice job. My only question would be why did the Cardinal manager take the baseball from him after working only 71 pitches and then use 4 arms from the BP to work 4 innings before heading to NY for 3 games against what looks to be a good Mets team? Seems silly. If they really want Matz to work a regular turn in the rotation, why not at least stretch him out a little bit? Did Matz suffer some sort of an arm injury or was the little whiz-kid worried that Steven may sneeze out there on the mound and break a bone or tear a sinew? Oh well, the W looks nice.
We got good Matz today. He tends to be good Matz more often in his contract year, so hopefully we can take advantage of that.
Reds have now reeled off 4 W’s. I also happened to notice their pitching’s only allowed 55 runs. Are they any good?
Donovan with another hit today gives him 27 for the season which leads the entire Big Leagues. That’s quite a few base hits for just 18 games.
At the beginning of the telecast the announcers stated that Matz was on a pitch count of about 60 pitches. They let him throw 71 so he could complete 5 innings and qualify for the win.
1TD, Matz was on a 65 pitch limit today since he pitched Saturday and would technically be in 1 days less rest than a normal starter. He also needs to build the pitch count up as most guys only pitch around 80 their 1st start of the year.
Good start from Matz though it appears. That now makes 6 of the last 7 starts that have been very good.
Haha…If that was the case, in my humble view, that’s ridiculous. And if he was indeed on a 65 limit pitch count, the Cardinal manager’s worse off than I thought he was, because obviously the little whiz-kid can’t count. Matz heaved 71 pitches…Haha! All jokes aside, a 65 pitch count limit should be reserved for cream filled cupcakes…
And I’ll also maintain that needlessly using 4 arms from the BP to work thru 4 innings in a game played during a travel day without an off day to play what looks to be a pretty good Mets team in a hostile environment is what I would term inane. Today’s game wasn’t the 7th game of the WS…
I don’t know what the big deal about Matz is. He hasn’t pitched more than 5 innings since spring training. I understand the concern about the bully but in more than one instance in this streak of games you’ll likely get a starter or 5-6 who will go only 5 innings.
Do they go by innings? I thought they went by some sort of magic number that they attached to a pitch count. That mystical magic number has seemed to have changed a bit from time to time, but it’s always had a sort of forboding presense. In any case, it’s perilous to exceed that mystical magic number because doing so instantly brings on a genuine calamity…Unless you’re Spahn or Marichal.
A fun stat comparison. Mikolas has thrown 13.0 innings across 3 starts while Matz has thrown 16.1 innings in 1 start and 5 bullpen appearances. Mikolas will most likely pass Matz Friday though unless he has another absolute clunker start.
It’s only a guess, but I’d imagine that if Mikolas scatters in his next turn on Friday, he’s the odd man out. I can’t think of any reason to keep handing him the baseball every 5th or 6th day while he gives the team less than a zero chance. Unless he provides a glimmer of hope on Friday, they just can’t keep handing him the baseball. At least, I guess they can’t…Haha!
Pitching staff has allowed 4 runs or less last 9 games….this next road trip should be interesting with the Mets and Braves….so far they have not been real good on the road at 1-5.
