I am going with the idea that Tanner’s Dad knows what is going on!

August 2, 2026 at 10:43 pm #315000Good for Tanner. I have a particular interest in starters who have no significant injury history as a pro or before. Perhaps family social media protocol could use work, don’t scoop your kid’s boss, but I too am a dad, so yeah. Congrats on your son’s success Mr. Franklin.

August 4, 2026 at 12:38 pm #315301Prieto getting the call up to replace Nootbaar. No Baez. Not even Saggese. I guess Baez needs more work and Torres gets some more runway in LF.
August 4, 2026 at 1:58 pm #315304Either more work for Baez or keeping his rookie eligibility for next year.
But I’m surprised it’s Prieto instead of Saggese. Saggese is more versatile defensively and seems to have been hitting better at Memphis. Saggese’s OPS was .808 in July to Prieto’s .681. Maybe they have Saggese working on something and want him to continue? Or they want him to play, but Prieto’s job will be to ride the bench? Or they’re hoping Prieto can show something so we can get something for him in the offseason when we need to clear roster space? Weird.
But yeah, I’d think of a lot of Torres and Fermin in LF, at least for the next 10 days or so.
August 4, 2026 at 2:06 pm #315307Saggese’s OPS was .808 in July to Prieto’s .681.
Maybe Prieto’s WAR was better.
August 4, 2026 at 3:24 pm #315309Hah!
And it’s Mathews who gets sent down to make room for Ferguson. So looks like we will get run of Dobbins in the rotation. I had thought someone official said they wanted to keep Mathews up, but maybe the extensive use of relievers caused this move? Dunno.
August 4, 2026 at 3:55 pm #315311Dobbins has earned his run in the rotation for now.
August 4, 2026 at 4:04 pm #315312I strongly believe Matthews is a lot better pitcher than Dobbins and is more likely to be part of the future core. But, maybe that’s the point with this move. It could buy another year of service for Matthews in the long run – maybe. But it will likely burn an option year which shouldn’t matter. Also, give Dobbins credit for pitching well in his MLB opportunities. AAA though has been a mixed bag for him.
August 4, 2026 at 4:15 pm #315315As it’s been for Matthews at times as well.
Fergie will be a welcomed left-handed addition as long as he keeps the ball in the yard. My guess is he gets some run tonight.
August 5, 2026 at 8:59 am #315372Brian, the roster matrix transactions say Franklin and Peete ro Memphis, or am I reading it wrong?
August 5, 2026 at 8:47 pm #315393That was a typo in the transactions laundry list. The good news is that the players were on the correct rosters both on the Matrix and on the team roster pages. I have corrected the text. Thank you for pointing out my mistake.
August 5, 2026 at 11:17 pm #315410Hmmm. This interesting prediction (liked by 261 people!) suggests that Mr. Denton missed the fact that the Cardinals did not trade away a catcher at the deadline, that he is foreshadowing an injury before it occurs, that they are giving up on Crooks for now, or that they are going to start carrying four catchers!
Which is it? 😉
If you believe this will happen, please explain why if they haven’t found regular time for Crooks, how and why would they for Bernal? As you can tell, I am having a lot of trouble rationalizing this…
One would assume that surging catcher Leonardo Bernal would be up with the #STLCards by this weekend or next week with the way he’s swinging the bat. The Cards need to see him handle and hit against MLB pitching. https://t.co/gXeTX8Tkwz

August 6, 2026 at 5:24 am #315418please explain why if they haven’t found regular time for Crooks, how and why would they for Bernal?
As to the catcher position, the Cardinals need to do something with somebody, but it doesn’t have to be right now.
August 6, 2026 at 8:40 am #315431I don’t see Bernal coming up this year even as a September callup so definitely not in agreement with Denton.
August 6, 2026 at 10:40 am #315444It won’t happen before the end of this season but the Cardinals need to clean up the catching logjam sooner than later. Not only Herrera, Pages, Crooks, and Bernal but Raniel is going to be entering the conversation very soon. I see him in Memphis next year.
August 6, 2026 at 11:39 am #315450Barring an injury, I don’t see any way Bernal gets called up this season. I’m not sure what Denton is even thinking here. More than likely, Baez comes up when rosters expand. Pitching side is harder to predict due to injuries and the shuttle, but in general, the additional player should be Matthews. I could also see a DFA of Stanek and addition of Rincon or Winquest around that time.
August 6, 2026 at 12:06 pm #315451I would be surprised to see Rincon added to the 40 man with a lockout looming.
August 6, 2026 at 3:44 pm #315452BB – To me, Rincon would be the least surprising. Regardless of Rule 5 or not, he becomes a free agent if not added. Therefore, less to lose on him than someone else.

August 6, 2026 at 5:21 pm #315456So I guess it will be Prieto going back down.
August 6, 2026 at 5:27 pm #315457Everson Pereira gives us 6 guys on the active roster with OPS+ 100 or better.
August 6, 2026 at 5:31 pm #315458I must be in the minority, but I wouldn’t mind seeing Bernal called up and Crooks sent down. Is Crooks that well liked as a receiver? And Crooks has a horrible strikeout rate. Bernal does not. Plus I think you might as well give Bernal MLB experience now because he may not get any next year.
I also would add Rincon. Rincon has pitched very well lately. We have very little in the cupboard as far as relievers go. Rincon can walk as minor league free agent after this year.
August 6, 2026 at 5:35 pm #315459Peirera may be optioned to Memphis. He’s a long time minor leaguer who started at 17 and made the Majors at 22 with the Yankees. He hit a lot throughout the Minors and probably was a big prospect back in the day. He’s still only 25, but I think this is his last year with options. My guess is he goes to Memphis either now or on September 1 when rosters expand and Baez comes up.
