January 15, 2024 at 10:52 am #241517Good information. I enjoyed going through it.
I think the book on Gorman is that he can’t handle the high fastball. If he can ever overcome that weakness his numbers will be huge.

January 15, 2024 at 6:02 pm #241555Lotsa stocking caps being worn this year. We were inside, you know…

ParticipantBrian – With the Cards depending more and more on internal options and taking a look at how effectively they’re developing players to perform at the major league level, I’m surprised they don’t have breakout sessions on those particular topics. And also on all things that go into the draft, like they used to with Kantrovitz and Flores. Are they underestimating the depth of fan knowledge?

Cardinals’ John Mozeliak Expected To Leave Front Office In Near Future
Story by Nate Hagerty •

January 16, 2024 at 10:53 am #241586Near Future?? Mo’s contract expires after the 2025 season. If he leaves I assume it would be then.

Sigh… All that work and it is not read…
You don’t have to listen to the full interview from Saturday, though his comments about his future are at the 9:30 mark. Or just scan through my written summary of Mo’s comments until you get to that part.
As gscottar said, the time frame is two seasons away. Click bait title.

I have no idea. I don’t know who sets the WWU agenda, but it isn’t Baseball Ops. Like you feel, it seems dumbed down to me. There was not a breakout I cared to see and the main tent is too hectic and noisy to be effective.
So, I asked Gary LaRocque to sit down with me after the panel discussion posted above. He answered all my questions and more. The interview will be posted Wednesday morning for subscribers.
January 16, 2024 at 2:47 pm #241592gscott, yep that’s what this is referring to. The headline says “near future,” which might not be “near” enough for some, but Jim Bowden said Mo said he believes end of contract will be it for him as POBO. Obviously, Bowden is a connected source.
January 16, 2024 at 2:49 pm #241593Bowden wasn’t at WWU this weekend. He is possibly regurgitating what we were told at WWU. If folks would just go to the interview, you can hear the words directly from Mo’s mouth!
January 16, 2024 at 2:57 pm #241594Haha Brian! I haven’t been reading a lot on a daily basis since the holidays. I read Nyquist’s post first so I responded to gscott about the “headline.” Then I read your stuff. I wondered if Bowden was there since he wrote Mo “told us” in the tweet, then I thought probably not. Or maybe he had dinner with Mo along the way, lol.
January 16, 2024 at 3:07 pm #241596No problem, Euro. Maybe Bowden had Mo on his show recently. I honestly don’t follow him closely. If he wasn’t a former GM, I would pay no attention at all. I put Steve Phillips in the same general category, FWIW.
And getting Cardinals news from MSN is like playing telephone. If you don’t want to go to TCN, go to the P-D or The Athletic or one of the other local writers, even MLB.com. At least it is usually first-hand.
January 16, 2024 at 3:20 pm #241597I don’t follow Bowden closely either, or anybody specifically. Just hunt for some scatter a few times a week go where that leads me. Then take what I find for what I think it’s worth. This is one site I do visit regularly and like to read even when I don’t post.
But based on what you said, I did just look at Bowden’s X feed and he posted he was going to have Mo as a guest on the Jan 14 show. Maybe it was lunch instead of dinner, haha.
January 16, 2024 at 3:45 pm #241599Yes, you can bet that as soon as he heard about Mo’s WWU comments on Saturday, Bowden lined him to come on his show Sunday. Getting the guys in the news is standard practice. And this way, he can say, “he told me”, which he did…
January 16, 2024 at 10:14 pm #241611They come in 5th place again this year I bet 2024 will be both Mo and Marmol’s last season with the Cardinals
January 17, 2024 at 2:06 am #241612And what will happen if we finish 1st?

jj-cf-stlParticipant“The middle relief corps stands as perhaps the teams top remaining priority.”

Not from my chair, in fact, not at all.Needed: 8th or 9th inning reliever with an established history of holding leads and saving leads. We have dozens of low leverage “middle relief” choices capable of blah, or better.
It amazes me that Goold and MLBTR consider middle relief a need.
Needed: shortstop depth behind Winn, not named Tommy Edman, as bench U.I.
Less than 100 GS at mlb, as SS, need not apply. We have many of those already.January 17, 2024 at 8:47 am #241619Eddie should be the starting SS.

ParticipantIf I had been there, I would have asked Gary what Libby, Thompson, McGreevy, Graceffo, and Roby are working on to hopefully become effective starters at the Major League level, since getting Lynn and Gibson have bought them some time.

jj-cf-stlParticipantI agree GameCard. Was hoping Carlson could have blocked Edman from CF, but here we are.
January 17, 2024 at 11:50 am #241628I wish Carlson was a better hitter, but he hasn’t been. Maybe he can be in the future.
If there is one thing I picked up at WWU is that the Cardinals believe Edman is the best CF on the roster and is Gold Glove capable there. Edman himself agreed with that. So I don’t get the resistance to playing the best players they have. Only a minority would rather have Carlson playing instead of Winn, but they are persistent…
