I sincerely doubt that he’s traded. I think he either clears waivers and returns to Memphis or if he truly is bad now, then he’s released. Bling, you’re 2 for 2 now! I never had much hope for Zuniga. But there was always a chance he found some control. The only reason I didn’t pick him is I clearly don’t understand what they are doing with guys like Rivas and Kennedy.
After last season, I do not think Zuniga has any value to us or anyone else. Given his results, I think he was hurt even when he wasn’t on the IL. I expect he is still hurt now. Even if he can answer the bell this spring, I don’t think Mo wants to waste any more innings on him when other guys need innings. Its too bad, but his body couldn’t take it.
I am not very good at these type of predictions but I will vote that he clears waivers and is assigned to Memphis. What is the harm in giving him a NRI to spring training and seeing what happens? They could always release him later.
Zuniga got shut down in August if I remember correctly. Will he even be ready to pitch in spring training?
Now that the pen has come into focus, I’ve been taking a look at it. If you line up the guys with their basic stats, two things leap out. One is the robust K/9 numbers, and the other is John King’s K/9 number. It sticks out like a sore thumb. He put up 4.8 K/9 last year, about half or less of the numbers I’m seeing otherwise.
Last year there was little choice, but this year there is a lot more choice. Not that he won’t make the cut, but he does stick out and not in a good way,
Continuing my focussed look at the pen, I wanted to get a sense of the pecking order and how the featured roles will parcel out. So I headed over to Cot’s to find out.
We have two $5 Million dollar relievers this year, Gallegos and Middleton. Helsley slots in behind them at 3+ and then Kittredge. That’s your core. So this is going to be interesting. Are we going to have a $5 Million 7th inning guy all year? Show of hands. Maybe two $5 Million 7th inning guys if a min wage guy emerges. (hint: he could emerge all he wants, he’s not pushing the money to middle relief) Or are we going to see some sort of continuous churn all year whilst the computer tries to sort out who should do what, when. Or is Mo going to turn all his hot new arms over to Ollie and Dusty to manage/mismanage? Show of hands on that. Anyone?
King will go as his BAbip goes, same as with last seasons difference, across two teams.
His BB/K of +8% K’s appears stable, but that GB% is his value, if he can maintain league average BAbip results.

Tommorrow to win: Gallegos, Kittredge, King
When behind: Fernandez, Robertson
Remaining churn has options.
One aspect King has going for him to make the opening day roster is that he makes more than the league minimum. Granted, his salary isn’t much above the league minimum but it might mean something to the penny pinchers in the front office.
How many days in a row do you expect the algo to spit that out, jj? All the input factors are variable and will never lead to the same result over and over. We know that field staff is expected to utilyze the algospew forgame prep and for in game decisions. There is no way it will be as tidy as you imagine.
Well, I do to. I just don’t think that is what we will see. I don’t think it will be left up to Ollie and Dusty, and I don’t think whoever it is up to will come up with the same thing as you and I.
This pen will be tested, often, with leads that need held and saved after 6 innings. A surprising amount.

We all lost on the Zuniga prediction since no one said traded. I even “sincerely doubted” that he’d be traded since I was guessing Zuniga had even less value than Gomez and Gomez made it through waivers. I guess the Angels felt they really wanted him and Mo decided it was better to get something than nothing.
“Have to go” to Memphis, that is. Other guys will get shaved off the bottom, not the guys realistically competing for jobs with St. Louis.
