MLB’s newest ranking (yesterday?) puts Voit at #27. Mr. Walton also has Voit at #27.
The MLB list added Edman#26 – Voit#27 – 6th rd. draft pick Zach Jackson #28 – Knizner#30.
They punched O’Neill in at #5. Gallen went from #22 to #14, Mercado went from #30 to #19.IMO Diaz is the biggest disappointment. Many regs here expected a repeat season from him and we got everything but that. Last season he filled the 2 spot very nicely, but the big improvement by Pham negates the loss. Tommy has put up similar numbers and has taken over Diaz’ spot in the order.
Next is Piscotty because we expected him to improve on his ’16 season. He hasn’t come close. I suspect that his personal troubles have effected him even more than his physical woes. He was supposed to be a middle of the order bat.
The middle of our order is not one you’d find on a successful team. Fowler-Gyorko-Molina are far from the what we’re used to seeing. Fowler is not fulfilling the billing that he was given and he will be out as the CF long before that contract ends. Gyorko would be a good 5th or 6th batter and Molina in the 5 hole makes that spot really soft. Yadi is slipping, offensively and defensively as his age would dictate.
The rotation is about what we could’ve expected. Perhaps Wacha is the exception because many figured we wouldn’t get much from him at all. Of course the loss of Reyes was critical. A couple more disappointments are relievers. OH tops that list along with Rosenthal, Siegrist and Cecil. That more or less set the tone for a weak back of the bullpen, and that has to be addressed.
Pham is a new man with new eyes this season and has produced accordingly. I think the play of DeJong is understated. I feel we can project him to be a long-term starter and I can see him filling one of the middle spots in the order. He may serve us better as a second-baseman. We can sell a little higher on Wong right now as he has started to hit. His one dimension doesn’t fit here.
Basically, this is a team with mediocre production from multi-positional players. Voit and Wong aren’t even that. We’re using band-aids to fill needs and it isn’t working so far. I think that we should cash in on some of the dead weight and wait for some prospects to revitalize this team. This team is horribly boring but I can envision some solid help from the farm to change that. You can’t run this bunch of guys out there every day and expect to win a division.
ps. we need to get a pure #4 bat…. we ain’t got any around, period.jager…. sometimes I agree and sometimes disagree, but I enjoy reading your comments so I hope you become more able to get through to us.
Molina seems to want to dominate playing time. Losing time to Kelly might make him less apt to offer Carson much help. That is what worries me. At work would you help someone to take over your job? Kelly may have to get more info from Matheny.
I agree with those…. they’re our near future rotation guys. We have to see how Reyes is, coming off his surgery. Do we have the power-armed Alex or something else?
I’d also like to keep Gallen, Hicks and Helsley as the next wave.
O’Neill hasn’t been placed at Memphis as of yet. They’ll need to make a roster move to open a spot.
So, you thought you knew the Springfield Cardinals. In April they looked like a solid team with starters Alcantara-Flaherty-Gomber-Hudson-Pearce-Poncedeleon, and there was Alvarez-Lino-Mejia-Thon-Wilson-JAGarcia-Martini-Mercado. Some very good arms and bats there.
With players coming and going plus the DL bug (Alvarez-Grayson) they finished the first half at 35-35. Alcantara, Hudson and Gomber remain add in reliever Echemendia and that’s all from the opening day pitching staff.
Of the position players only Wilson and Mercado (long DL stretch) have been on Springfields roster all season. Bruce Caldwell (Mem), Sierra have been up and now back.
The Cards have new members Gallen and Ellis in their rotation, plus additions Knizner, Edman, Nagowski, Seferina and Arozarena.
As it turns out this second half team has a 19-10 record and in 1st place. With all the roster changes within our organization Springfield has had the biggest turnover so far and most likely more will be coming and going. This sure ain’t the team that opened the season on April 6th in Frisco (Tx).
Ps. the goal is to keep the prospects moving up…. some get blocked some get moved up because of another team’s necessity. It’s a long tough road for these guys.
With all due respect to Hudson (big fan)…. Brady Whalen had a super day for Johnson City in a 9-8 win over Danville. Whalen was 3-4, (2) 2b, BB and 5 RBIs. Brady has been struggling defensively and with the bat (.190). In his 2nd pro season he’s young at 19 y.o. and at 6’4″ he’s been playing 3B for the Mountain Cards. Here’s hoping that his big offensive might set a fire under him.
Springfield has 3 Cs. One (Jenner) is designated to be an emergency replacement for the full-season clubs. (He’s done it in the past and knows which doors go to all of the clubhouses).
You’re right Carlos belongs there…. I went with their last 4 GSs because I’m talking about now and the recent past.
Just out of curiosity, what is about this team that you enjoy? Or is it just that it is that baseball is the best game in the world. (without the replay nonsense).Can you tell me why you believe Young is stumbling? He’s batting .294 in his last 10 games @ PB, that’s a fact. PB doesn’t trot out a very good positional team. As far as MLB potential, the “golden ring” is a difficult climb…. making it to Memphis is tough enough. But making it to Memphis leaves you a shot at the 40-man (ala Mejia). I think Young makes it to Memphis. Which I can’t say about some others that you have put ahead of Young.
The players that are arrogant, have checked pasts, have made poor life choices and are going in the wrong direction are the ones that one should be concerned about. Sometimes grit just outdoes glimmer. Don’t be fooled by headline makers…. because some of the headlines are negative. And if you put a lot of faith in scouting reports, they have been known to be wrong, wrong and sometimes wrong.

This team is flat, this team is boring, this team make too many little league mistakes, this team has little hustle, stick a fork in them…. this team is going nowhere fast. If it wasn’t for Pham, DeJong, Wacha and Lynn this team would have no pulse and pronounced d.o.a.

C’mon….. 23 is the average for the Adv-A league. Helsley, Jones, JeMartinez and now O’Reilly were all born in !994. AND we’ll see how high Young can climb before he’s 24 in May’18. I know he doesn’t project as an MLB starter but last year at this time he was working hard at State College.
Kyle Reis at the REDBIRD DAILY has him at #28. Perhaps you don’t see hard work and no-nonsense focus as “potential”.
ps. his hitting is improving as I write this. Check it out. Oh, and I see that O’Reilly (age 24) had no problem showing up at #32 on your list from being omitted in MAY.
pss. I’m not a paid advocate for AY…. just stating some facts and having some enjoyment as I follow the organization this season.The big news is that Mike O’Reilly was kicked up to Palm Beach and joins Hicks, who made his 1st start there on July 12th. It’s safe to assume that O’Reilly will join the BeachBirds rotation which recently lost both Woodfood and DGonzalez. I’m guessing O’Reilly will start on Saturday at Lakeland.
O’Reilly started 12 games for Peoria. His 1st start came on May 9th after three relief appearances for the Chiefs and he has never looked back. MO has stunned nearly everyone in the organization. The 5′-11″ righty is clearly the surprise package of ’17…. even more so than Mercado’s revival.His Game Scores have been consistently outstanding with only one hiccup on June 13th.
The other news is that Grichuk has begun his rehab at Springfield last night going 1-4 HR, 3RBI and 2K.
Maybe he can see(pun) the same eye doctor that fixed Tommie Pham’s eyes. Pham has turned into a dynamo since he somehow got improved vision. At the end of ’16 he was a mess and Matheny wouldn’t even use him to PH. He has to be right behind Mercado as another stunner in ’17.There was a lot of bad pitching starts last night throughout the organization, so the starter of the day belongs to Winston Nicasio down at the GCL-Cards. It was his third start… the first two were total duds.

Who is the sixth starter? AlReyes?
IMO Gallen is right behind Weaver and Flaherty. He’s more consistent than Hudson. I don’t like the idea of making relievers out of starters (ex.Lynn). There may be some instances where it’s the correct thing to try. I think they lose their value. There will most likely be a couple of the starters that will be used to acquire position players that we need. We seem to have a number of P prospects exceeding expectations. I also feel that after the Peoria bunch the starting pitching drops off quite a bit, so we need to make sure that we’re holding on to the right guys.Realistically, so much will change before opening day ’18. But it’s good you’ve made a plan to work with.
Springfield has reeled of 6 in a row…. allowing just 7 runs (3 last night). Gallen-Hudson-Gomber-Alcantara-Ellis provide them with solid early on innings. (Pearce just moved up to Memphis.)
When Sierra returns, he’ll join Mercado and Arozarena in the OF… nice trio.
Knizner has been raking lately and the INF of Seferina-Edman-Nagowski-Wilson are all performing well.
This is a team with Alvarez and Sosa on the DL.State College is starting to get some decent pitching now, but the bottom 2 rookie team’s pitching are disasters. Much different than last season.
Mets announcers kept complaining about the time spent on the Gyorko replay. MLB wants to speed up the game and institutes the one thing that causes 10-15 minutes of nothingness. Two grown men standing around with wires and etc. up their a$$e$ looking like fools. I HATE REPLAY!!!! Play the game.
Teams get 1/2 the calls in favor and 1/2 against…. in the long run it all works out it’s the nature of the game. The umpires would make sure of that. Maybe only use it in the post-season.
