Tyler O’Neill had better stats than both… Just most of it wasnt for us.

ParticipantI saw Perez this spring. He had/has a real weird swing IMO. I wasn’t a big fan of them.
August 5, 2017 at 3:06 pm #29721I have seen a lot of posts at this site and others speculating about the off season and 40 man roster spots and rule 5 protection. I did a post at the old site on this but will.update it here (basically starting over). Here is my take on those who I believe either need rule 5 protection or can become minor league free agents if not added to the 40 man roster.
I am not going to speculate at this time how many spots will be open but merely suggest the order the Cards might choose to protect them. Some will disagree and I welcome the feedback/discussion.
1. Alcantra
2. O’Neill
3. Gomber
4. Ellis
5. Montgomery
6. Mercado
7. Seferina
8. Sherrif
9. Morales
10. Martini
11. Reyes
12. Wisdom
13. DrakeI have gone to 13 because that is the list of those that I think are at risk of being taken (though it is very slight after #8-9.)
August 5, 2017 at 4:21 pm #29724CC, this is a pretty good and long-running subject, deserving of its own thread, IMO.

ParticipantI’ve heard some rumblings concerning Bryce Denton as being a legit top prospect. The 3rd year pro, drafted as a 3B (now an OF) at age 18 in the 3rd rd. hasn’t really impressed and has been dropping in the prospect rankings.
He had a so-so season at JC last year after a poor showing in the GCL in his rookie year. This year at SC was looking like another in the string of disappointments. But recently something changed as Denton started putting some multi-hit games together and his average started rising. He was at .222 on July 25th, since then he’s hit at a .441 clip and raised his BA up to .282.
We’ve seen other prospects go on tears like this. However this one is different in that it shows some promise for Denton… we now know that he has it in him to be productive over a stretch of games… he still has potential. He is the youngest drafted player at the adv-Rookie level and I hope for all concerned that this newly found success is the kick to get him to open some eyes and get his potential to work for himself.August 6, 2017 at 8:05 am #2978914NyquisT
ParticipantYou would think that the organization would hate to lose any of the top three. IMO, Seferina would get serious consideration (I don’t know what SD’s needs are right now). I’d hate to see Andy Morales go…. he still has a lot to prove after his string of injuries.

ParticipantStrange things happen up there in the Appalachian Mountains. You’d think that the JC Cards would have had a win in the twelve inning affair last night. Jacob Schlesener pitched 6 inn. of no-hit ball and the Cards had a 4-1 lead going to the 7th. The Princeton Rays rallied in the 9th to tie it at 4-4 and the two teams exchanged 1 run each in the 11th. In the 12th, the Ray’s Devin Davis finally got to Will Changarotty for a 2-run homer (Changarotty was in his third inning of relief) and Princeton left with a 7-5 win.
Besides Schlesener’s best JC start of the season (GS=81) and the 21Ks their pitchers amassed (Schles had 13 alone), Chase Pinder had 5 hits and Luis Bandes hit his 6th HR. It was a long night for the Mt. Cards and it ended in a bad way. They get another shot at the Rays today with Zach Prendergast looking for a 2nd win in his 2nd start.

ParticipantGDI-WTF, my post got lost (UGH).

ParticipantIt the organization is all in on the reclamation of Gilmartin, who is rehabbing in the GCL, it may spell the end for Socolovich or Wick. Wick has regressed this season and it now looks like MLB is out of the question for him…. It would also open a spot on the 40 man roster.

ParticipantSome of our prospects are having truly forgettable seasons at Peoria and State College. Some of those that have been put on the back burners are Peoria: John Kilichowski(DL) (pitched terribly early on) -Ronnie Williams (still relevant but would like this season be over with) State College: Anthony Ciavarella (pitched some good games last season in the GCL) Steven Farinaro (was the stopper last season with the same team) Dennis Ortega ( what has happened to him? oh yeah JLopez.)

ParticipantBryce Denton has really turned things around especially since Carlson and Plummer have struggled at Peoria.
August 11, 2017 at 12:05 pm #30358PadsFS
ParticipantAugust 10, 2017 Palm Beach Cardinals released 3B Casey Turgeon.
Sad news there I saw. I guess they called up Vince Jackson?
August 11, 2017 at 12:49 pm #30361Pads, there is an article on the home page from yesterday with all the recent player news.
August 11, 2017 at 7:40 pm #30382Mendoza and his .370 batting average to Peoria.
August 12, 2017 at 10:17 am #3045314NyquisT
ParticipantJeez…. Mendoza was solid at the plate all season and his average kept going up. I hope that he continues to hit at Peoria. That’s something I look for… success following a promotion.
August 12, 2017 at 11:37 am #30465Pinder is also hitting very well.
Mendoza already up to Palm Beach. Faster than DeJong and Bader moved in their first season.
August 12, 2017 at 11:38 am #30466Maybe this draft class is not so much a bust.
August 12, 2017 at 1:32 pm #30475Well, for sure Mendoza is standing out. In this system, a third baseman should move up just as fast as he shows he can.
August 12, 2017 at 4:48 pm #30488Mendoza only moved up to Peoria not PB (see my post from yesterday) their is a Mendoza at PB but he is the Cuban pitcher they signed this year in late June.

ParticipantHas anyone observed Delvin Perez anywhere?…. since Irving Lopez took over that lead-off spot he has been maintained a BA in the .320s.
Austin Warner, the 23 y.o. walk on this season made his 5th start last night for Peoria (his age appropriate level). 3 of the 5 he had game scores 70+…. and his last 2 have been 86 & 79.
I’m willing to bet that Breyvic Valera would be playing in the MLB with at least 10 other teams.
I don’t know why Piscotty isn’t playing 1B at Memphis. At least he can add something to his resume while at the AAA level.
While the SPFD prospects’s BAs have leveled off, Andew Knizner has maintained his and Jacob Wilson has upped his significantly.
Wadye Ynfante and Chase Pinder are an excellent two-way OF duo for Johnson City.
Andrew Summerville has joined Danny Castano in the State College rotation to form a very tough 1-2 punch for NYPL opponents. Andy has made 6 starts with no game score under 47. Last 3=62-63-64. Jeez, I hope that I don’t jinx him.

ParticipantSpringfield has moved into 1st place in the Texas League North 3 games up on Tulsa with 20 games to go. They’re on a 9-1 run and Anthony Garcia is leading the way batting .432 in his last 10 games. On the flip side Seferina is 2-39 (.051) in last 10, Caldwell 2-30 (.067) and Nogowski 5-32 (.156) over the same stretch.
Leland Tilley has been terrific out of the pen this season that is split between State College and now Peoria. In his last 10 games, he’s pitched 22.0inn 19Ks, 1 ER and ERA of 0.41 and his WHIP is 0.82. That’s a pretty clean record.
GCL-Cards are 7-2 in their next 9gms. and now only 2.0 gms out of a play-off spot.
August 15, 2017 at 8:13 am #3062614NyquisT
ParticipantJordan Hicks pitched 3.0 inn of relief for PB last night at Dunedin… 49 pitches- 0runs- 3H-3K.
Brady Whalen is 9 for his last 20 for Johnson City.
Jordan Schafer began his rehab at GCL… as a DH… 0-2, 1BB.
Noel DeJesus is making the most out of his chance to start. Last night in his 9th game and fourth start and got his 2nd win. The 20 y.o. has a 2.76 ERA and his last 4 Game Starts have been 62-42-69-63. (the rest of the staff has 2 GS over 60 for the entire season)
Jon Machado (18) is 13-26 in his last 6 games…. getting his BA. up to .353
August 15, 2017 at 5:42 pm #30668Going into tonight’s games the Cardinal minor league teams are 70 games over .500. This includes the 7 games under .500 by our very young DSL team. Of course Memphis is 40 games over.
August 16, 2017 at 8:53 am #3073414NyquisT
ParticipantHalf way through August the leading contenders for Pitcher Of the Month IMO are Gomber (SPRF)- Warner (Peo)- Summerville (SC)- DeJesus (GCL-Cards)
August 19, 2017 at 9:34 am #3105014NyquisT
ParticipantJacob Schlesener is leading the Appalachian League in Ks with 60. 60…. in 39.0inn. He’ll be 21 in Octso it’s his age appropriate level. A 12th rounder out of H.S. in ’15. Last season he struggled mightily ending with a 9.00 ERA. After two seasons, (working in the BP and interrupted with injury, it looked like his career might have been in jeopardy. Moving JS into a starting role this season has had magical results, and he’s back on track as a prospect.
Derian Gonzalez pitched his 1 inn rehab at GCL-Cards yesterday. It’s good to see some injuried players returning to finish out the season.Sean Gilmartin is back with Memphis,Jordan Schafer is rehabbing in the OF, Eddy Sosa is 4-9 at GCL.
As fast as they can get them back on the field they’re losing more and more to the dreaded DL.
