Participantcc…. you may be right about Kelly going on the block with the rise of Knizner, but I don’t think so. Knizner’s stock has gone up big time. Consider that in 53 weeks he went from Johnson City to Springfield AND has been successful. I think he got the chance for that jump because of the lack of good catching at the levels in between. Also, MEM has little in the way of catchers, PB has JEMartinez who has truly struggled and losing ABs to Godoy because is BA is way too low. PEO has a DH/C and an OK catcher that is 24 y.o. and playing his second season at low-A.
The lower levels…..State College has a C that can hit but can’t catch and another that can catch but his bat has been a disappointment. JC has a couple of good catching prospects and the CGL-Cards has a prospect that hasn’t proven himself stateside.
The point being that after Kelly and Knizner, as it stands now, there is a big drop-off. If Kelly is PlanA, then Knizner has to be PlanB. And you have to have at least a PlanB, especially with catchers.

Participantgs…. although I disagree with about 40% of what you are proposing, I still like to hear what the knowledgeable folks have to say about next season’s team makeup. What the F.O. will do over the winter (who knows at this point and we’re usually wrong with trying to speculate) and what happens at Jupiter ultimately will determine who we will actually be running out on the field in ’18 (historically there is a surprise or two.)
Just wondering… are you done with the ’17 club? It sounds like you are getting the wood ready for the hot stove.
Side note: thank you for not making any managerial suggestions.

ParticipantAfter all is said and done regarding Edman’s career, how significant is the time Sosa has spent on the DL?

ParticipantI was thinking that reaching the 40-man roster should be considered a preliminary goal for prospects. That would include prospects that need to be protected from rule-5, a prospect’s position would also be a factor. As the Card’s roster changes for whatever reason, so do a prospect’s chances of becoming a MLer and, in most cases, being on the 40-man roster increases a prospect’s chances significantly. Right now, we have four prospects on the 40-man roster without any MLB time and I would guess that two never will see any.
If you look at, for example, the MLB top-30, 5 have already reached the bigs. (Weaver is now off… Denton on at #30). How many of the remaining 25 hit the 40-man as a prerequisite to being a major-leaguer. How many can you see as having a significant role?

ParticipantBW…. how could they not have a plan? Let’s just say they thought that they have some options. PLAN A. A four year contract for Molina would make you think that the best catching MiLB prospect will be traded. (BAD MOVE)… PLAN B might have been let Molina tutor Kelly and break him in as needed.(NOT HAPPENING). PLAN C well, I guess there is no plan C. Thus the calamity.
By Molina creating unrest, the F.O. can’t trade Kelly and rely on Rosario to fill that spot. IMO, Molina has changed his mind about the next 3 1/2 years, possibly because of the downturn in the Cardinals present and its’ future 3 1/2 years. Is it just coincidental that Molina is part of the spiral downward?
I said earlier…. ask for a list of teams that Molina would rather play for. Eat a sizable part of his contract and send him on his way. I lost a lot of admiration for Yadi…. what’s wrong with him?

ParticipantYou would think that the organization would hate to lose any of the top three. IMO, Seferina would get serious consideration (I don’t know what SD’s needs are right now). I’d hate to see Andy Morales go…. he still has a lot to prove after his string of injuries.

ParticipantI buy what you are saying.
Not that these are apples and apples but in the top 3 rounds of the ’15 draft we got Plummer-Woodford-Denton-Bader-Hicks. In ’16 we got Perez-Carlson-Hudson-Jones-Gallen. In ’17 we got Scott Hurst. If you added 3 higher prospects that we lost to HOU and the Fowler pick, I think our Rookie League teams might have a little more star-power. As they stand now, all three are below mediocre. And as you noted, last season we had 3 Championship R-League teams.

ParticipantInteresting list bc. The top 7 entered MLB with some shine (all as Cards), the bottom 7 were busts and the middle 6 had little fame in MLB.

ParticipantStrange things happen up there in the Appalachian Mountains. You’d think that the JC Cards would have had a win in the twelve inning affair last night. Jacob Schlesener pitched 6 inn. of no-hit ball and the Cards had a 4-1 lead going to the 7th. The Princeton Rays rallied in the 9th to tie it at 4-4 and the two teams exchanged 1 run each in the 11th. In the 12th, the Ray’s Devin Davis finally got to Will Changarotty for a 2-run homer (Changarotty was in his third inning of relief) and Princeton left with a 7-5 win.
Besides Schlesener’s best JC start of the season (GS=81) and the 21Ks their pitchers amassed (Schles had 13 alone), Chase Pinder had 5 hits and Luis Bandes hit his 6th HR. It was a long night for the Mt. Cards and it ended in a bad way. They get another shot at the Rays today with Zach Prendergast looking for a 2nd win in his 2nd start.

ParticipantI’ve heard some rumblings concerning Bryce Denton as being a legit top prospect. The 3rd year pro, drafted as a 3B (now an OF) at age 18 in the 3rd rd. hasn’t really impressed and has been dropping in the prospect rankings.
He had a so-so season at JC last year after a poor showing in the GCL in his rookie year. This year at SC was looking like another in the string of disappointments. But recently something changed as Denton started putting some multi-hit games together and his average started rising. He was at .222 on July 25th, since then he’s hit at a .441 clip and raised his BA up to .282.
We’ve seen other prospects go on tears like this. However this one is different in that it shows some promise for Denton… we now know that he has it in him to be productive over a stretch of games… he still has potential. He is the youngest drafted player at the adv-Rookie level and I hope for all concerned that this newly found success is the kick to get him to open some eyes and get his potential to work for himself.14NyquisT
ParticipantThe recent question of Matheny’s effectiveness is a good test to see what kind of MANager he really is. I think he survives with some help from the higher-ups.
ps. I have NEVER commented on any of Matheny’s decisions. I feel that he is in the dugout… most of us are in recliners. Get my point?14NyquisT
ParticipantGomber has had some good sized bumps this season, but four out of his last five starts have been very solid. We’ll see where he stands at the end of this season and more importantly at spring training ’18.
Gomber has plenty of talent… but the other young guys have been even better. If the injury bug should bite (ala Poncedeleon) the effect should be minimal. BTW… I think of Danny every day just seeing him on the Memphis roster with a DL after his name. Get better fast Danny. 🙂

ParticipantWith Weaver back @ MEM, the Redbird rotation (at least 4 will be MLBers) is somewhat close to matching a MLB rotation. Some teams have horrible pitching.

ParticipantIMO, Wick and Gilmartin don’t belong on the 40-man. Wick has become a very average AA reliever and Gilmartin has shown very little in his career as far as I can see. I’m not sure who will need protection from the Padres, but there’s two possible spots.
The organization keeps Valera around because the guy can flat out HIT. Perhaps next Spring he’ll move up on the depth chart. O’Neill may get a shot at the 40-man…. the F.O. didn’t trade Marco for a AAAA OFer.
Right now Rosario is #3 on the depth chart only because of his MLB experience. That #3 spot will soon go to Knizner who is having a great year at AA.I get the feeling that the Cardinals will bite the bullet and lose a significant amount of $$ when Molina goes…. and in less then 3 1/2 years… and sooner than our fans think. I don’t see any other way to resolve that misguided contract mistake. IMO right now he is persona non grata. Sorry Yadi, you brought this on yourself.

ParticipantAfter Voit was called up to the big club, an earlier pick-up from the OAK organization, Rangel Ravelo took his spot at MEM. Ravelo was hitting a ton and made the Voit move easier on the system. The sometimes super play of Nogowski at SPFD is also a blessing.
Prendergast, 22 y.o. RHP, is scheduled to pitch today to pitch for JC. A couple of good starts from him there could help out the Cards who just lost Oviedo to SC. Warner (23) fits in nicely at PEO now that Tewes took another jump up to PB. The 24 y.o. Zgardowski is an unknown but could help out at SC.
Our two lowest Rookie teams, JC and GCL-Cards both need some help as the pitching has been porous… the loss of the 3 draft picks is partly responsible for that. The 3 Indi Ps should add some depth and eat some innings.

ParticipantToo bad…. it was interesting to see Weaver being challenged by MLB.

ParticipantBW…. you commented on an after though. How about commenting on the main question.

ParticipantI beg to differ… the Cubs, Brewers, Pirates and Reds along with their fans… will all be better off with an aging Cardinal roster.
14NyquisT
ParticipantIf they didn’t have a plan, why did the re-up on Molina’s contract? Did “THEY” somehow overlook the fact that they had the best catching prospect in MiLB and at the same time the oldest starting catcher in the League? This is what happens when you put one man’s hometown popularity over what’s best for the team. GOOD… now let mgmt. and the fans be hung out to dry.
We fared better when “THEY” let pujols walk.

ParticipantIMO Perez has played himself out of favor with a lot of affiliate followers. In his second pro season he has failed to hit at Johnson City, demoted to GCL and failed to hit plus he has added to the baggage that he was already carrying. Since he WAS a #1 draft pick, the organization will bend over backwards to try to get him to the level of his “potential”. If he wasn’t drafted at the top, he’d be a bench player. I’ve dropped him accordingly in my own personal prospects list… there are too many guys actually producing and playing with a higher intensity in addition to using their natural talent. Some die-hards here are still very much rapped up in Perez’ ability to make headlines even though they are negative.
Hey Delvin…. hit or get off the pot.
14NyquisT
ParticipantSeveral of the “usual suspects” are having really good seasons. Good to see that Tewes and Mulford are getting some recognition. Make room for Summerville in the August selections, a very good 12th rounder.
14NyquisT
ParticipantI’ve been watching Evan Mendoza, our 11th rd. pick ’17 at State College all season. The guy has proved that he can hit at his level, just needs to add some power and we may be looking at a top 3B prospect. I would like to see the just turned 21 y.o., get some time at Peoria before the end of the season. A bonafide 3B prospect could climb quickly through the system.
14NyquisT
ParticipantI commented earlier about the Molina outburst. No one in the F.O. wants discord, especially going public. I believe Molina was one of the older players that Heywad was speaking of when he shot off his big mouth publicly and left town. BW mentioned that Molina seemingly has almost everything a veteran player could want, so what else is necessary to make him happier? a pacifier? The contract the organization gave him was a huge mistake… didn’t anyone see this coming? Geez, I was thinking it was a three year deal…. four years is just plain ridiculous.
Both Molina and Pham are career Cardinal system guys, however maybe it’s time they left with another city sticker on their luggage. Neither is indispensable, au contraire. IMO, they can be replaced in a heartbeat.
If Molina keeps up venting his wishes in the media…. off with his head.

ParticipantBW….. I remember when TCruz first came up in ’11 and he was given some time at 1B,2B,3B the OF and of course catching. I know he started his pro career as a 3B, but the Cards were obviously trying to find ABs for him as he was hitting up a storm at the time.
