#41 – Connor Lunn, rhp 120 innings pitched at Peoria makes him stand out from the crowd.

#42 – Pedro Pages, c Decent season at Peoria inspires hope for this 6th rounder.

#43 – Carlos Soto, c Left handed hitter has improved in Mexican Winter League this year.

#44 – Seth Elledge, rhp Was terrible in AAA and the bigs, but deserves consideration here for getting as far as he has. With a few tweaks, he could still be productive as a big league reliever.

#45 – LJ Jones, of Only one year of minor league ball. Still has a chance to improve.

#26 . Matt Koperniak Will play this year at age 24. Breezed thru A, A+, and AA in his first pro season. Plays all OF positions and played shortstop and 3rd base in college. Good approach at the plate with 41 walks and 55 K’s in 390 AB’s. One of the most intriguing prospects in our system.

#27 . Chandler Redmond 25 yo, 4-year college player. Bats left, plays multiple positions. Ended the season at AA Springfield with 18 HR’s across two levels.

#28 . Ian Bedell Impressed scouts pre-draft with a ceiling of mid-rotation starter. 4th Rnd pick in 2020 with $800,000 bonus. Limited action in 2021 coming off injury.

#29 . Jeremy Rivas 19 y.o. shortstop began his career in the rookie league. playing in 48 games with 200 plate appearances. He batted .271 with no power and pretty decent speed as a baserunner.

#30 . Jhon Torres Traded to St. Louis in 2018, he will be 22 yo this season. Still young, but we’re still waiting on that power to arrive. Hopefully he will see time at Springfield this year and he will start answering some of our questions.

Thoughts on players at this point in the list:

Delvin Perez—In my mind, he’s still a prospect. But I think Jeremy Rivas has a much higher upside at shortstop.

Luken Baker—I understand why he was left off the protected list, but it scares me to death. I’m so afraid this guy is gonna be the next Voit for somebody.

Connor Thomas—2019 5th Round Pick. Left-handed pitcher. Has produced at every level. I agree with Bob Reed, Perhaps the best pitching prospect nobody is talking about.

Jhon Torres—Will only be 22 when this season starts. It’s time to see some results, but Torres is the kind of guy that can put it together quickly. It needs to happen this year.

Tink Hence—Very underrated here so far. He’s #11 on BA Mid-season list. He’s got a long way to go but a very long runway.

Ryan Holgate—Complete college hitter. Lefty with possible power. Not overpowering in A ball. Still some question marks, but he’s a 2nd round pick, so he deserves time. Rated #12 Cardinal prospect in mid-season list by Prospects Live.

Austin Love—Another 2021 draft pick. Three solid pitches with good spin rate. (Prospects Live) Pitched well in a test drive after draft. Rated #20 by BA in mid-season.

Alec Willis—$1 Million bonus for 7th round pick. Rated #96 prospect pre-draft by Prospects Live. 6-5, 220. Fastball sits in low to mid 90s, projects for more.

Zane Mills—Another college arm. Drafted this year in the 4th round. Another big guy. 6-4, 220. We are gonna have a lot of guys to watch and learn about next year.

Patrick Romeri—Only 20 y.o., he has a chance to move quickly. His stats intrigue me. I agree with Bob Reed, a real sleeper.

There are more: Ian Bedell, Gordon Graceffo, Levi Prater, Matt Koperniak, etc.

This is getting very difficult for me. Lol.

    Joshua Baez at #10.

I wanted to choose Brendan Donovan here but I’m worried that his defense will hinder him from becoming an Edman-type player. I will keep him cue-ed up for an upcoming pick.

I usually choose results over promise, but some of you guys are making me believe the hype. Baez was rated higher than McGreevy on a lot of prospect lists, and that $2,250,000 bonus for a middle-to-low 2nd round pick makes me think the Cardinals brass believes the hype as well.

I will pick Zack Thompson at #9 also.

His numbers were concerning in 2021, but he improved somewhat in the AFL. I went back and read the articles about him when he was drafted. I think the Cardinals still believe in his talent by the way they handled him in ’21. Even if he ends up in the bullpen, I think he will pitch meaningful innings soon.

Brendan Donovan was my runner-up. His age and ceiling is a factor with me. But gscottar calling him Edman 2.0 gave me pause. I think that comparison is very possible and I’m hopeful that it materializes. He plays all over the diamond and has succeeded at every stop.

We have two spots left in the Top 10, and, in my mind, (at least) four deserving prospects. Thompson and Donovan are the higher level prospects. Baez and McGreevy have high potential based on bonus money and draft status.

I usually make my pick early in the process, but I think I will wait to read the comments on these guys. (Or others.)

    For me, it’s Nooooot!

    #8—Lars Nootbaar.

Some prospects get to the majors and wilt under the pressure. Others actually outperform their ratings. Nootbaar showed surprising skills in his first trip to the bigs. Excellent defense and baserunning. I know he hit only .239 in the majors, but he hit .308 at Memphis and .314/.437/.643 in the AFL. And went down to the wire as an MVP candidate in Arizona as well. There’s a lot to like about Noot.

When we vote, are we voting for…

Not to speak for stlcard25, but my philosophy is based on a balance of a number of things. Early on, with the youngest of prospects, I consider draft position, bonus money, early scouting reports from a variety of sources (with an emphasis on Cardinal Nation info and lists), and finally, actual statistics and promotions/demotions. Potential goes a long way with the younger guys.

As the prospects mature, I emphasize stats and promotions more, all the while watching what the writers and posters here have to say. I watch videos where I can and continue to peruse the lists of other publications. Results count more for me with the older guys.

On deciding what to emphasize, it is different for each player. Kind of a balancing act. I value players higher as they advance. I value Nootbaar over Baez right now, but hopefully Baez ends up a much better player. Baez has a long way to go for me, but still would be in my Top 10. I voted Walker #2 because of potential, PLUS enough results in his first year to make me believe he can reach his potential.

I think everyone has their own criteria for their vote. That’s what makes this exercise so much fum..

Some thoughts as we reach an exciting point of the voting:

Joshua Baez—2nd round pick in 2021. Unlimited potential. Rookie league results disappointing, but not enough to dampen spirits. (Though Tre Fletcher says hello.)

Zack Thompson—Redeemed himself somewhat in the AFL in relief, but still has monumental control problems with 15 walks in 17 innings.

Alec Burleson—Exciting player who made it all the way to AAA. What I like most is his ability to hit to all fields, almost a lost art today. He could be next year’s Nootbaar.

Brendan Donovan—Moved up the ladder just like Burleson, but probably not as high a celing. Plays multiple positions, protected in the Rule-5 draft, did well in the AFL.

Lars Nootbaar—Did it at the major league level. Plays very good defense, good baserunner, decent hitter with more to come, I believe. Really battles at the plate. I think, with opportunity, he could hit .250 with 12-18 HRs and 8-12 SBs. I hope he doesn’t get that opportunity next year.

I choose Nootbaar at #7. He’s already proved it in the big leagues.

I’m 63, graduated HS in 1976. When my son turned 40 this past year, I told him, “You don’t know what you turning 40 does to me!” He said, “YOU? What about me?” I said, “It’s worse for me. You just turned 40. I now have a SON that’s 40! Do you how much older i feel knowing that?”

Both of those players came through trades not free agency.

But the Cardinals still PAY them, don’t they?

Your first post said, “But the fact that they don’t want to spend the money on top quality players who could push the team over the top…” It doesn’t matter if they were signed or traded for, they still pay their salaries, which undercuts your original point.

As much as some of us want to ignore it, we are NOT a large market organization. You can’t blame DeWitt for wanting to make a profit every year. Do any of us work for nothing? I have seen plenty of teams “go for it” every year and come up short. Look at the Mets this past year. They traded for the best of shortstops, then signed him to a long term deal. They made other moves that made them favorites with the pundits. They finished 77-85, 11 1/2 games behind the Braves. It happens to many teams every year.

Also, you can’t always believe Mozaliak’s statements to the media. How many times did he say a deal for Arenado wasn’t going to happen. Until it did. As soon as he says, “We are looking for a shortstop”, the price increases. Haven’t you ever bought a car? Lol. You can be sure that Mo will be quietly checking around on every free agent. The Cards have a number in mind on every possible free agent that fits what they want to accomplish this off-season. It’s not likely that a match can be found with a shortstop, but you never know. I remember so-called Cardinal fans saying Mo would never pull the trigger on a Goldschmidt deal. Until he did.

The Cardinals have a plan. They’re not going to tell you every detail. I think Mo has done a decent job considering the parameters DeWitt has given him. I did have a problem with him firing Shildt, but if we go deep into the playoffs next year, I’ll gladly defer. If we fall flat on our face, it might be time for Mo to go. I think it’s kind of all or nothing when you fire a successful manager for “philosophical differences.” Your “philosophy” better work! (I like Marmol, by the way. But that doesn’t make it right.)

Masyn Winn. My pick for #4 prospect.

This is the post I have been waiting to write. There is a term in the financial world stated long ago called “Irrational exuberance.” It means to be extremely joyous or enthusiastic about something without sufficient enough cause. That’s me and Masyn Winn. Every so often, in my 50 years of fandom, I get this way about a prospect. My last favorite before Winn was Harrison Bader. My first one came as a 14 year old with a pitcher named Scipio Spinks. There’s been a few more in between.

Winn is a one-of-a-kind prospect. A unicorn. Baseball America said of him, Pound for pound, Winn could be the most purely talented player in the 2020 draft. Now we have a year’s worth of stats on him. Starting at Low-A as a 19 year old, he was not overwhelmed. A promotion to High-A for 36 games was a little tougher for him, but didn’t hurt his prospect status.

So many great things are being said about him. Two way player. Great speed. A true shortstop. A great arm that throws up to a 98 MPH fastball.

The ‘esteemed’ Bob Cobb? No, I’m definitely not the same guy. Lol. I’m just a lifelong Cardinal fan who is always looking for the next ‘Baby Bird’ to fly into the nest.

I will also pick Matthew Liberatore for #3 on the list.

For all his hype, Matt hasn’t really pitched a lot in the minors, and he hasn’t dominated at the AAA level yet. A really good season in Memphis would propel him forward to fulfill his goals and our hopes for him.

I participated in the voting a few years ago and would like to this year, if I may. I know that I have missed the first vote, but I will include it here as it matches the majority.

#1 Nolan Gorman He was #40 in last year’s Baseball America Top 100 prospects, and his numbers this past year have justified that rating. I see his ceiling offensively similar to Tyler O’Neil. Defensively, he may move around, with his best position probably being DH. I expect growing pains after he reaches the majors, but we will be happy with the finished product.

#2 Jordan Walker Ranked #38 in the BA Top 100 before the season started, I don’t think anybody would have predicted the numbers he put up in A ball and High-A at the tender age of 19. I usually favor prospects in the higher levels, but Walker is such an intriguing prospect.
