I’m going with Zack Thompson at #9. He is basically your LHSP opposite of McGreevy, yet he’s reached Memphis already. I don’t see any way to really slot our most recent first rounder ahead of the 2019 version. Whereas McGreevy features pinpoint command, Thompson has that Genesis Cabrera “effectively wild” tag written all over his future. The killer curve should play and I like him to be at worst an impact reliever (in the Brett Cecil, Toronto version-who was quite good-mode) and at best a #2/3 starter.
Baez has a ton of talent and the drive to be the next Trout (that was his goal, he said). Donovan is a utility guy who did well in 2021. But when you combine proximity and potential, no one left tops Thompson, IMO.
Baez had a .158 avg. and .608 OPS last year. Granted, that was only 76 ab’s, so hopefully he will find his stroke in ’22. The team needs him to be good! I liked some things I saw in Thompson in the AFL, but he has to get better command to cut down on walks. I like Donovan as well, but in terms of best prospect at this point, I will vote for Zack Thompson at #9. Baez can make his way up the ladder with a strong spring and summer.
I am going with Brendan Donovan #9. He has really impressed the last couple of years and I think he could be Tommy Edman 2.0, plus I tend to go with prospects who have proven themselves at the higher levels unless their talent is so obvious like Walker.
I apologize for missing my vote yesterday, but I was on a baseball recruiting trip with my youngest boy all day. Congrats to Noot for the #8 spot. My spot at #9 will be Brendan Donovan.
I like Donovan, but picking him here seems like choosing Daniel Descalso over Wacha, Lynn, Hudson or other similar starter.
If we were going to start ranking defensively challenged utility infielders this highly, we would be much better served taking a longer look at Chandler Redmond.I will pick Zack Thompson at #9 also.
His numbers were concerning in 2021, but he improved somewhat in the AFL. I went back and read the articles about him when he was drafted. I think the Cardinals still believe in his talent by the way they handled him in ’21. Even if he ends up in the bullpen, I think he will pitch meaningful innings soon.
Brendan Donovan was my runner-up. His age and ceiling is a factor with me. But gscottar calling him Edman 2.0 gave me pause. I think that comparison is very possible and I’m hopeful that it materializes. He plays all over the diamond and has succeeded at every stop.
Just as an FYI as we have a close vote here…in the event of a tie, we will be using previous votes as tiebreakers. So if two tie for #9, we go back to #8 and who got more votes that round. If they tie there, we go to #7 if applicable, and so on. If all those are tied, I guess we’d just declare a draw and make them co-#9s, etc.
This is just for the top 10. When we go to voting in groups of 5, I will post the tiebreakers then. It’s a very similar system.
I’ll be the first to vote for Angel Rondon. I have always liked his stuff. His offerings are rarely straight and he can hit mid 90s. His first half was rough, but he largely turned things around. I think with his first spring training invite, and AAA stints under his belt, his 2022 will be much improved. Along with Pallante, he might be the Cards 6th starter, or could flourish in relief.

Baez is the long shot Pugs. He is quite the prospect, but McGreevey has the best chance at a long career.
Strike throwers like the great Fagalde used to fascinate you. Everyone knows deep down that McGreevey is way better than PJ Walters, and he was a testament to what getting ahead in the count means.Neither McGreevey nor Baez showed us much of anything in 2021. The draft was moved back until the middle of July. Those 4 or 5 weeks following the draft are now about just getting the players signed, evaluated by trainers, and acclimated to professional baseball. It’s not about impressing.
Out of respect for his being chosen in the first round, I’ll vote for Michael McGreevey at #10.
Brendon Donovan is my pick for #10. I think he is ready to make the jump to the majors and will help the team as a utility guy off the bench unless needed due to injury. He may develop into an everyday option given some reps on the field.
I am sticking with Baez at #10. McGreevy very close behind. I know Donovan and Thompson are almost ready, but the ceiling is higher for Baez and McGreevy at this point.
McGeevy for #10. Barring a trade Donovan is not going to crack the infield. He is not a shortstop and he is not going to get ahead of gorman. I do love his stats and progress through the system. So far Baez has been all talk.

I wanted to choose Brendan Donovan here but I’m worried that his defense will hinder him from becoming an Edman-type player. I will keep him cue-ed up for an upcoming pick.
I usually choose results over promise, but some of you guys are making me believe the hype. Baez was rated higher than McGreevy on a lot of prospect lists, and that $2,250,000 bonus for a middle-to-low 2nd round pick makes me think the Cardinals brass believes the hype as well.
