I think Winn is all the things we dreamed Perez might become, and he is one of the top ten arms in the system.
Herrera showed some progress in hitting to the opposite field. I wonder if his low babip could be due to him genuinely working approach over results. He really can hit. I wondered about all the reports I had read compared with his Stat line at the park, but after a few games it was evident Ivan is going to hit and hit with power at some point in the near future.
My vote is for Yepez at 4. I think he is the most likely of the three to make the mlb (since he already has technically, and both the others are still uncertain.) I think Yepez has real limitations in the field, and I don’t think playing four different positions poorly is an advantage.
Winn has the highest ceiling, Herrera is the most likely five-year starter, but Yepez could get 400 ab’s as a dh next year. If he continues to ascend those 400 at bats would only be his if he replicated 2021. For #5, I’m going with a player some say is the best pure hitter in our system. He was drafted in 2020 and 2021 was his first professional season. He started out in Peoria, was promoted to Springfield, then promoted again to Memphis. For the season, on only 116 games, he smacked 22 home runs and drove in 76. The former East Carolina Pirate – Alec Burleson.
Didn’t know we had started voting. Although, voting has pretty much went as expected. Winnat #5 for me.
I would have had 1) Gorman, 2) Liberatore 3) Walker 4) Winn 5) Herrera.
Liberatore made a huge jump and did well at AAA. I love Walker, but I would like to see him stay healthy, otherwise he would have number 2. Herrera plays the most difficult position, and is ready for AAA.
Once again, going with Herrera at #5. Winn is impressive, but reports of Herrera’s decline are greatly exaggerated. He was above league average in AA at the toughest position to excel at in sports and did so while barely 21. The defense will play and the bat will get even better. I think he will be the starting catcher in 2023, although we will probably have to get used to a new normal as a “starter” will probably be more like 110-120 games going forward rather than ironman Yadi’s usual.
I agree with bcc and rank Burleson at #5. Really liked his hitting at several levels. Looking forward to seeing how this year goes for him! Great upside!
I really have no clue here…again. I feel like Johan Oviedo needs some consideration. He is very close, and his potential is near the top of a rotation.
He is very much like Gorman in that he progresses quickly, gives us reasons to pause and pick at him, then adjusts and keeps moving forward.
Winn really is exciting, but as a pitcher, he has sooo far to go. That leaves us with an A ball shortstop with divided focus and all sorts of potential injury issues due to throwing so darn hard.
Herrera is close to the MLB, too, but catchers are no sure thing. Their worts get exposed at the upper levels and potential big bats become defensive-first guys because potential means you haven’t done it yet.#5 Masyn Winn: Probably the biggest boom or bust prospect in the system. Above average (112 wRC+/108 DRC+) at PB at 19 with a promotion to Peoria, following Jordan Walker. Struggled at the plate with a 48 wRC+ but only slightly below average by DRC+ (83). So a little bit unlucky, but not completely overwhelmed while being 19 at High A ball. Statistics certainly aren’t the whole story with prospects and that is certainly the case for Winn. Kyle Reis has a good write up on Masyn at Birds on the Black (highly recommend the Dirty Flirty Top 40 on BOTB) and brought a few good points. He loves Masyn’s defense. Basically puts him as a top 2-3 defensive shortstop in MLB ceiling type prospect. Also very interesting was his observation that Winn makes others around him better. He points out that Jordan Walker’s sudden improvement at Peoria coincided with Masyn Winn’s arrival. Certainly a far cry from the assertion that he was a problem child when he was drafted (Stemming from an incident at an AAU event I believe). Either way sounds like he is a good teammate. Overall as a SS he’s top 5 in the system, particularly if his hit tool improves to even average. If his pitching comes along, it could be interesting the ways they could use him.
