I like the idea. Without looking at the expert forecasters, I would guess that there is less difference in their expected WAR’s than there is in their Salaries. If that is indeed the case, then we could take a prospect or 2 in exchange for the surplus value.
I think Mike (Girsh) and Mo will get a closer and we will never know which of you would have been right.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Reyes used as a closer. At least for 1 season and possibly for as many as 3 or 4 before moving him to the rotation.
I think we should keep DeJong and woffer Delvin Perez instead. And throw in a pitcher or 2 for Zack Britton.
If the Cardinals still want a Stanton-like bat, they might as well load up a van with 4 or 5 of our top prospects and head east on I70… to Baltimore.
I am getting a feeling that we will strike a deal with Tampa Bay. The stars just seem to be lining up that way. JMHO

The more I think about it, the more sense it makes (to me).
I have no idea how unreasonable the Rays demands are for Colome and/or Archer/Odorizzi, but I have a feeling that they are so motivated to dump Longoria’s contract that their demands will be more reasonable than ever. A deal between the Cardinals and Rays could come down to who blinks first.
I also like the idea of signing Cozart. I would make him the everyday SS and make DeJong a super-sub. Before anyone screams “DeJong is our SS”, consider that Albert Pujols started at several positions in his first 2 years. The Cards can still get DeJong 500+ AB’s.
An infield of:
1B – Carp/Gyorko/Hosmer (1 of 3) If Hosmer can be signed, trade Carp (and maybe Gyorko too).
2B – Kolten Wong (I would not trade him)
SS – Zack Cozart
3B – Evan LongoriaBackup 2B – DeJong
Backup SS – DeJong
Backup 3B – DeJong
Bench INF – G Garcia (if not traded)
Bench INF – Gyorko (if not traded)I didn’t intend to suggest that he was a 1st round prospect (just a potential late 1st round pick. But if I remember correctly, I think (or thought) he was ranked in the 30’s. I remember thinking that he was someone that the Cardinals should take with one of their early picks (I think they had #25 (they took Perez), #33 (Carlson), and #34 (Hudson).
Can someone tell me if this is the same guy I was thinking of. Maybe Mendoza was a sophomore eligible in 2016 AND either wasn’t drafted, or was drafted and not signed.

I agree that there is no comparison between Stanton and Longoria. In fact, is Longoria even an upgrade over Gyorko? We would still need an upgrade somewhere. Jose Abreau would be nice, but you are replacing a left-handed bat with a right handed bat. AND, I don’t think the Cards will move Carp to 2nd base. Now, I know that Carp has been told that he will be a “super-sub”, but I don’t buy that. If we get another 1B, then I think Carp will be traded. If that happens, Wong and Fowler would be the only left-handed bats in the lineup.
Instead, I would try to sign Hosmer. Not sure that he would be an upgrade for the lineup either, but maybe we’d get a defensive upgrade (and something in return for Carp).

I think TB would gladly trade those 3 players, but I don’t think that package will get it done.
They might take Gyorko as a replacement for Longoria, since his guaranteed $22 million is much less than the $100 million that Longoria is guaranteed. I also think that Tuivailala would be an acceptable piece for them. However, I question whether they would have much interest in Wick, Valera, and Gant, but who knows. You might have to add a better pitching prospect, say Alcantara. That might not get it done either, but that is about all I would give for that group (assuming no money is involved).I like the way you think though.
Ever since the Alex Colome rumors first started circulating, I have thought that TB was trying to package Longoria with Colome (and maybe Odorizzi or Archer) in a deal where they can dump all (or nearly all) of Longoria’s guaranteed salary.
I’m sure that TB and StL both know (or believe or suspect) that Longoria’s best days may be behind him (as most everyone here seems to think) , which makes him much less valuable than even 1 year ago.
I honestly think that TB will have to eat some of that contract in order to dump him, or sweeten the deal by adding something extra to the deal (Archer vs Odorizzi ??) or demanding less in return (Zac Gallen vs Alcantara ??).
I don’t think there is any doubt that the Cards have talent that TB would love to have, but it would be risky for the Cardinals to take on Longoria’s contract.
The question I have is: “Would StL take Longoria under any circumstances at this point? I personally don’t think he qualifies as the “big bat” we need, but if we could land Colome and Archer (or Odorizzi), I wouldn’t hate taking Longoria’s contract off their hands, if the prospects/players going to TB are reasonable.
I would like to reiterate that I don’t think he would satisfy the goal of adding a “big bat”.

I haven’t heard any trade chatter for Gyorko, but I have read chatter about Carpenter. Mo did say that Yadi was the only one that is safe.
I love Matt, but I think it is time to move him, most likely to an AL team where he can DH part-time.

You may be right mspaid, but that isn’t such a bad idea. Cozart had a breakout year… on a bad team.
Of course, that would not eliminate the need for a big bat.
So far, all of the talk has been about the pitching coach. What about the bullpen coach? Who are the candidates? I think it should be someone who was a reliever himself.
I think Flores would make a better bullpen coach… we need one of them also. Not sure that he would be interested in that job though.

His bio says he was a catcher in HS. Would the Cards try to convert him back to catching at this stage of his development? Surely, the Mariners would have kept him there if he could have handled it.
Perhaps the reason will become more apparent in the next week or so.
The cubs might go to the postseason and we may not. But we have an apportunity to do something that would raise a few eyebrows and remind some people of the trade that brought Lou Brock to St. Louis.

Gleyber Torres was a top prospect in the Cubs organization. He is now the top rated prospect in the Yankee organization.
Now I hate the Yankees more than any other baseball team, but they are buyers, and the best kind of buyers at that. They have money and they want to win.
So… heres the pitch (pun intended). The Yanks need a first baseman and they could use a starter and a reliever. We send Carpenter (or Voit), Rosey (or Oh), and Lance Lynn for Gleyber Torres. If one of those combinations isn’t enough, add Delvin Perez and add or subtract from there to get it done.
