Word is coming out that the Cubs are giving Morrow $10-$11 MM per year on a two-year deal plus an option. The price of relief is up.

The price of everything is up and if the Cardinals actually have any interest in getting better then they’ll have to increase the payroll by a LARGE amount or settle for more mediocrity.

Since Arizona is squeezed financially, maybe the Cardinals can trade Grichuk + Piscotty for Pollock
    https://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/mlb/diamondbacks/2017/12/09/diamondbacks-eyeing-upgrades-baseballs-winter-meetings/937986001/

AZ gets two outfielders for the price of one, and save about $5 million to address their bullpen. Cardinals get an upgrade in the outfield.

POllock is a good target…but isnt he a FA after this year along with the other bigs? Id think he wants to make bank in that crazy market

I do like him as a target if we can get an extension done as part of the deal…. i’d also inquire on Owings too….he’d be a great backup SS 2b and OFer with major wheels

Not picking on you, Jager. This is an honest question about something I do not follow as closely as I probably should. How often does a contract extension occur with a player right when he is traded? I cannot recall any cases, and think it would be pretty difficult to engineer, especially given the player is still another team’s property and has no experience in the new city. But maybe there are some examples when this happened. Any thoughts from the group on how realistic this idea is?

i definitely agree it woudl be hard and perhaps has little precedent

but wasnt the Holliday deal with the hopes of re-signing him? Perhaps it is not possible or easily possible, but maybe they’d like Pollock so much (or Machado serves just as easily for this discussion) just like they liked Holliday… that they’d pay for the extra time to woo him while in their uniform and prepare themselves for giving them the biggest contract in the clubs history (just like HOlliday)

i get your point…. but i wonder if we coudl snag Pollock…or really Machado….if we coudl start offering him the extension immediately….he doesnt have to wait to get paid another year and deal with the crazy offseason..w.e can offer him huge money and other teams cant talk to him for almost a year…add in being the anchor of a new look tema perhaps to go with the Red jackets and baseball love of StL and you might just get one of the big deals for 2019 done in 2018…and maybe just maybe get it to be with the StL Cardinals and not LAD, CHI, NYY, WASH etc etc

If the Cardinals still want a Stanton-like bat, they might as well load up a van with 4 or 5 of our top prospects and head east on I70… to Baltimore.

I am getting a feeling that we will strike a deal with Tampa Bay. The stars just seem to be lining up that way. JMHO

The good thing about Longoria is that he is under contract for 5 years.
The bad thing about Longoria is that he is under contract for 5 years.
    Ironic huh?

Odd that so little has happened at the winter meetings so far, unless it all goes down right before the end…saw on msn they had articles that had us getting Wade Davis and Arrieta or Darvish along with maybe trading for Archer, Colome, and Longoria from Tampa…I could see the Tampa trade but not the pitchers…

    Logan:

Quite an interesting array of possible acquisitions. If we get even ONE of those six I will be surprised.

Yeah the article had us getting all of them, to me we’d probably only get about half of them if that…no to any of those free agent pitchers…just seems like the winter meetings are like 3 days of fun before they then actually do trades and such only the last 2 days, I remember in years past the trades came fast and furious and all…

For those who covet Machado Baltimore is shopping him. Machado prefers to play SS.

That would be a curve (at least to me) ..

Dejong would be very dealable in that scenario for me…

Even though Cards’ interest is unclear at this time, I started a separate Machado thread. It is sure to generate a lot of discussion.

Just wondering how late do the talks at the meetings go, basically if a trade hasn’t been done by 5PM eastern it won’t happen until tomorrow or something like that…

    No schedule.

Cubs gave Drew Smyly two years, $10 million, even though the first he will miss recovering from Tommy John. They also signed Brandon Morrow, two years, $20 million plus 3rd year option.

Enough with the BS nonsense/doubletalk from MO/Girsch.Either you are making a deal or not.I am tired of “we are optimistic” but not near the finish line crap.Quit screwing around and get something done. You(MO?Girsch) have had months to figure out plan A,B,C D and fallbacks for those deals or signings.Enough with the unrealistic nonsense with Machado/Donaldson (one year then free agency).Get moving and upgrade this team.
Yes i admit i am losing patience with MO?Girsch and their snail-like pace doing anything.Paralysis by analysis.MO acts like a dog circling aound for 5 minutes before deciding to lay down in the same spot it just got up from.

no one is making any moves for the most part

we have to be patient….which sucks… but it’s not like anyone else is doing anything either

plus..we have already done 3 moves

    Diaz
    Mikolas
    Gregerson

    that’s more than most teams

plus…we were heavily involved in the one of the two BIG things that has happened the Stanton deal…(and we were at least somewhat involved inthe Ohtani deal too)

I want them to act quickly too, but it’s not like we are doing anything less than any other team

BW52, perhaps you should get into basketball during the offseason!

I don’t get these teams, specifically the Cubs, pursuing players that worked under their former coaches/managers. Neither Cobb or Smyly were all that good at Tampa, expecting different results with the same cast of coaches in a much more hitter-friendly ballpark seems backwards to me.

Also, they seem to target signing a bunch of injury-risks like the Dodgers, which didn’t work for them either.

I sure wish the Cards had magic powers to snap their fingers and get the other 29 teams to do what they want. Wouldn’t that be great? (unless the subject is Stanton, then it would still not matter!)

It isn’t unprecedented for deals to happen after the Winter Meetings conclude. Being face to face may help but these front office’s have cell phones and internet connections. I’m sure they will keep in touch.

I saw some complaints that the agents are taking up so much time selling their free agents that the GMs are getting less time to work on deals.

I am just getting somewhat frustrated by the “we are close but not close” BS.Yes Brian i realize it takes two to tango and i know deals do happen after the meetings.I am just irritated because all we heard for weeks was “we plan on making things happen at the winter meetings”.
If you can`t get a suitable deal for Ozuna or Yelich then get off your ass MO and sign a big bat before you look up and you are left with NO upgrades available. How do you think the fanbase will react to that?
The meetings are not over but i am becoming more doubtful anything upgrading the team gets done.PARALYSIS BY ANALYSIS.

I am definitely starting to wonder if having so many options is paralyzing us and getting some stones is necessary.
