Well, we already know we have poor defense, poor situational hitting, poor base running, and an abysmal bullpen. Then give up 4 runs in the 1st, and prospects for winning this one are extremely low. Cubs will be celebrating on our turf. Next year seems like a loooong way off.

Today’s loss only hurts if you expected them to win. I haven’t expected them to win on any given day since about the All Star break, but cheering for them to spoil a Div championship for the Cubs as they close this out.

MM singing Oh’s and Cecil’s praises from LAST year as reasons why he puts them in “big situations” this year (post game interview). Anyone who doubts that MM is a key reason this team is struggling just needs to listen to that interview. Player accountability is nil on this team right now.

When you need to put up a zero, Oh is not your guy. MM should know that. If it’s truly all hands on deck, then I don’t care who threw 20 pitches yesterday, go out there and pitch till your arm falls off.

I think our “playoffs” ended with the sweep at Wrigley, but I hope they prove me wrong.

Cubs lose in 10, Rockies down 2-0 in the 6th. Frustrating loss tonight. Cards need to bring their A game starting now.

Have been watching without sound. What’s up with Wano’s compression sleeve? Ump made him take it off. Pham is teed off about something too…

I like this pitching matchup. If Lynn is on his game, Cards win. And Cards usually play well in Pittsburg. All must wins from this point forward.

Agree with the earlier post that taking out the Cubs would be ideal. I’d like to see the Cards in that role at the end, and either win the Div or see the Brewers edge out the Cubs when we beat them. Still a long shot, but wins are better than losses and we are currently winning. Rockies are having some trouble too. Pirates are beatable, let’s see where we’re at late Sunday.

True, they are not mathematically out it (and I do respect Yogi Bera), but it would take an epic failure on the part of the Cubs and Brewers for the Cards to make the playoffs (not counting a wild card since Rockies are also finishing strong). Cubs finish out against Tampa Bay, Brewers, Cards and Reds, and Brewers finish against all NL Central teams. Our NL Central record has been abysmal expect for the Pirates, so the playoff picture has faded to black.

Our best hope now, and would make my heart sing with joy, would be for the Cards to play spoiler to the Cubs in the last series and watch the Brewers take the Div. Gotta shoot for something, right?

Finally, Lance Lynn is a good pitcher, but not an elite pitcher. His value as a free agent could run around $10-12M which is low marginal value for the Cards since we already have 5 starters who could potentially be 10 game winners. There are several teams in desperate need of quality starters who would see much higher value in a Lynn trade. Use the cash we save on Lynn and any other head room in the topline to acquire some quality relief pitching and a hitter or two for the middle of the lineup. There is hope for 2018, but Cards need to get at it, now.

    As Don Meredith would say:

    Turn out the lights
    The party’s over
    They say that all
    Good things must end
    Call it a night
    The party’s over
    And tomorrow starts
    The same old thing again

Kind of sums up the year.

Yep, now’s the time to play to win, not to build confidence in pitchers.

Started good, ended bad. Win the next two and only two back though. I agree with Jager it’s fun to watch games that matter, just wish we weren’t in this situation. Lackey’s antics are unprofessional, but in the end, they got the W. we need to do better, so Time to step it up. These are the playoffs right now.

They’re back to their old form. Poor relief pitching and management, and poor situational hitting. Someone needs to tell Carp he needs to swing the bat if he wants to get a hit. He’s getting too used to walks. Cubs and Brewers winning. Bad night all around.

At the game in the Redbird Club. Flaherty losing some control in the 4th, but only 50 pitches so far. 7 LOB for Cards is not good but at least they’re getting on base. I sense Cards runs coming next inning or two.

Did Cecil actually put up a zero after a lead off double? Maybe things really are starting to improve. Alcantra hitting 100, but lead off walk. If he finds the plate, he’ll be almost unhittable.

Looks like Lynn on Tuesday, Flaherty on Wed. Brewers lose, but Rockies up by 3 in the 8th. Need to sweep the Reds.

Wacha at his best and good to see MM leave him in until the 9th. With Nocasio, Lyons, Brebia, Bowman pitching fairly well, might have a chance to save some late inning games in the final run. Much different from earlier in the season. Still,it’s hard to make up April losses in Sep, but even so, cards’ fate is in their own hands. Two months ago, I didn’t think we’d be in this position, but Cubs and Brewers underperformed as well. Will be a very interesting final three weeks, with most pressure on the Cubs.

Martinez in to shut it down through 9. Complete game shutout would be welcome right now.

The wide range of opinions is fascinating, and the best solution probably lies close to the middle. Not a complete house cleaning, but several improvements in key areas. Look, the Cardinals will keep true to their culture which is to rely on homegrown talent and limit trades/free agency. But clearly the bullpen needs major work, outfield some, and 3rd base. It doesn’t matter a whole lot if you get an outfielder who hits .290 vs. the .240 we have now if the bullpen can’t keep games close in 7-9. We would be division leaders now if it weren’t for relief losses in late innings. Reyes could/should be a 15/16 game winner if BP backs him up. Waino possibly if health stays good. Weaver, C-Mart, Wacha should be 10 game winners all. Manager needs to be looked at hard too — he has underperformed even if you factor in mediocre players, particularly with bullpen pitchers.

Every batter in the Nat’l league has Oh’s number. They should not put him in game save situations. His only pitch is that slider to righties and they know that. Guaranteed hit or close to it.
