Greg Garcia doubles in Ozuna! 5-2 in the 8th!
Yadi singles, Bader & Wisom score. 4-2 Cardinals!
Carpenter grounds into a force out at the plate, let’s see if Yadi can get it into the outfield
2-2 bases loaded, nobody out, Carpenter up after the pitching change
Wisdom with his first RBI!
Singles by Gyorko and G Garcia, now a walk by Bader and we have bases loaded, nobody out in the 7th!
Yes, nice to see some actual defense in the outfield…
Ross works a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the 4th
Well, Bader was one for two in throwing people out at the plate that inning. Royals lead 2-1
A guy that’s throwing 67% strikes has already hit two batters, and it costs him. Yadi got HBP’d, moving Wisdom to 2nd. JMart drives Wisdom in and Yadi “scampers” to 3rd.
Wisdom gets his first hit on his first plate appearance!
Not exactly hard contact, but hey, he’s on base!
Ross with a much better second inning, but barely 50% strikes through 2
As I was starting to admire the KC pitcher’s strike %, he hits DeJong
Cardinals finally escape the inning thanks to a pitcher’s best friend. Royals lead 1-0.
Where is Pugs and his colorful commentary?
Wisdom not off to a good start – gives up a run scoring error at 1B
Ross at 21 pitches and has only recorded one out. Bases loaded.
August 12, 2018 at 12:36 pm in reply to: What is wrong with Dexter Fowler and what should be done? #65103As an example, no one could ever have guessed that all three starting OFs last summer would be gone a year later (Pham, Grichuk and Piscotty – Fowler was hurt). So it is not like they have not made changes.
I consider this a rather false argument.
In 2017:
– We waited until May 31st to release Broxton, even though he was terrible all year up to that point
– We waited until June 13th to release Jhonny PeraltaIn 2018:
– We waited until Aug 1 to release Greg Holland. Holland was making a lot more than Broxton. Now, let’s take a look at the learning curve of this front office:
– For four straight years, they have experimented with batting Carpenter somewhere else in the order besides leadoff, even though he is the best leadoff hitter in the game. For four straight years, this experiment has failed miserably. Each time, Carpenter goes on a tear as soon as he returns to the leadoff.
– Last year, Mozeliak admitted they got boxed in by having too many relievers without options, such that they couldn’t use the Memphis shuttle. What did they do this year? Signed Holland, Norris, Gregerson and traded for Leone. When did the bullpen start producing? When we started using the Memphis shuttle. So, let’s see if Mozeliak can learn his lesson after two years, or if he is going to be as thick-headed as he is with batting Carpenter somewhere else in the order than leadoff.August 12, 2018 at 12:19 pm in reply to: What is wrong with Dexter Fowler and what should be done? #65099Who would want him?
At this point, the only team I see taking a chance on him is the Cubs, with us paying $16 million of his $16.5 million salary. Theo Epstein would love that.
As Brian pointed out earlier in the thread comparing Dexter Fowler’s chance of being traded to the Matt Kemp situation:
– Kemp was a malcontent in his stops in San Diego and Atlanta (much like Fowler appears here)
– Kemp was injured most of that time (much like Fowler here)
– Kemp was traded to help the Dodgers get under the luxury tax threshold (traded $40 million of salary this year for $40 million of Kemp over two years) in a trade facilitated by the Atlanta front office having ties to the Dodgers front office. Not sure we have any front offices filled with former employees willing to help us out
– Kemp was traded back to the team he had his best years for, and has experienced a resurgence. The team that fits that bill is the Cubs.Glad to see Wisdom get a chance. Hopefully, he will get in some games and produce so he can build up his value for the offseason.
August 12, 2018 at 12:10 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #65095Back on page 67, I did an analysis of where I thought JMart could be traded. I indicated I thought it was doubtful we could trade him back to KC given they gave him up for cash. After reading this article, it sounds as though they might be willing to take him back as a DH/emergency outfielder at some point in the future.
Interesting to read Girsch’s comments about how they valued two players named Jose Martinez.
I will say, now that the Cardinals are using JMart more to his strengths (DH/pinch hitter/emergency outfielder), there isn’t near the urgency to trade him as there was earlier in the season. And if we do make it back to the world series in the next few years, having JMart as a DH could be an advantage.
I still think for roster management purposes, he needs to be traded.
Is everyone on the Shildt bandwagon yet?
Yes, I think he’s doing a good job. I think all of the coaches are. If our goal is to develop young talent, it appears that the coaching staff that was promoted a few weeks ago appear to be doing a good job so far.
If we make the playoffs, I think they are a lock to keep their promotions. If we win more series than we lose, I think it’s highly likely.
The only thing I think can prevent them from winning these jobs on a full-time basis is a complete collapse, which I don’t see happening right now.
August 11, 2018 at 1:56 pm in reply to: What is wrong with Dexter Fowler and what should be done? #64995For those stuck on money, they admitted they were wrong about Leake to the tune of $17 million.
The difference with Fowler is they were wrong by $50 million from the outset, and now that Fowler is one of the worst players in the league, that number has only gone up.
If Dex is with the club in 2019, I think it would be clean slate in the Spring and he would be given an opportunity to win a starting job.
The problem is, he doesn’t have to “win” a starting job. He certainly didn’t win it this year. It was awarded to him based on the size of his contract. They kept marching him out there because the size of his contract.
no one has really stepped up and shown they should have been in there. I suppose we could say Bader,
Bader outplayed him offensively and defensively…the only thing that makes JMart palatable in RF is that his defense really isn’t any worse than Fowler’s, and hey, he can hit!!!
Before Fowler went down with injury and Pham was traded, who was really given a chance to prove themselves?
We do need the roster spots but it really only becomes worthwhile if the team spends the money saved by sending Fowler’s contract elsewhere.
Disagree. If Fowler is the worst player on the team, and running him out there costs the team actual wins, not just WAR wins, then the team is better off by removing him from the roster.
Let’s say we miss the playoffs by two games. Do you think we might have won two more games this year by trotting Bader out there every game instead of Fowler? I do. Whether it’s catching a ball, getting a hit or turning a double into a triple, I am sure Bader would’ve helped the Cardinals win at least two more games this year.
Sports is about winning, not optimal spending. Optimal spending is a means to an end, it’s a way to get increased budgets at those times you really should be going for it. Outside of St. Louis’ fanbase, nobody cares they have “dry powder” year after year.
August 11, 2018 at 9:50 am in reply to: Former Cardinals in the News – 2017 to Aug. 2024 (closed) #64971but his quick hook on starters worries me in relationship to wearing out his bullpen.
This is offset in part by having relievers in the bullpen that can go multiple innings and allowing such relievers to pitch more than one inning at a time.
Poncedeleon got himself both into and out of a jam. Nice work.
Great job by Gomber, though he struggled with it. Gave up leadoff triple, a walk and HBP and escapes the inning unscathed other than pitch count and stress.
