We may have an ace in Weaver.

Terrific post, Sooner. A pleasure reading it.

That’s if you think baseball players are worth that. Stanton type salaries are ridiculous in the overall scheme of things.

And I believe that our manager does that, Forsch. I could show facts too. Like the number of minor leaguers called up in the past 2 years compared to other teams. Or the number of WAR days of key players lost to injury compared to other teams (especially in our division) over the past several years.

But you would continue to show sustain for Mike Matheny anyway.

So it’s probably just best to agree to disagree.

If those stats were Cardinals stats, you would be blaming Cards general management for not bringing in enough talent, and Cardinals field management for being lousy coaches and the manager for not having a clue.

Oh, so Bochy doesn’t have good pitching and good hitting to work with but Matheny does? That’s a riot, Forsch!

Madden was a good manager until he way overused his closer.

Bochy was a good manager until his team went South.

“Good” managers and “Bad” managers shift and change with time, and are many times in the eyes of the beholder.

Forsch – all managers probably cost their teams a minimum of 4-5 games a year with their decision making. A Probably more, as 858 says.

I thought our manager did that.

Or are you talking about Madden and his use of Chapman. Or perhaps the recent performance of the Giants under Bochy. Whadya think, NJ and Forsch? Do you think all managers should be let go and every major league team should do a managerial restart?

Sure makes a difference when your starter does his job and your players score some runs.

OF – Fowler, Pham, and Piscotty. With Grichuk, Martinez, Bader, Martini, O’Neill, Sierra, A. Garcia, and Arozarena all in the picture, I don’t see a big move here that would entail big bucks and blockage.

IF – Carpenter, Wong, DeJong, and Gyorko. Garcia, Voit, Valera, Diaz, Mejia, etc. providing depth. I could see a big upgrade and move at 3B. Probably via trade.

C – set with Molina and Kelly.

SP – Waino, Martinez, Wacha, Weaver, and Reyes as he recovers. Flaherty, Gant, Hudson, Gallen, Gomber, etc. for depth. I don’t see them spending big money here.

RP – big upgrades needed. Lyons, Tuivailala, Brebbia, Lucas, etc. are a core, but there will definitely be some major moves.

    JMHO.

Sure, there are some people who are into analyzing everything a manager does in a game. In a loss, they will usually criticize him for the lineup, pinch hitter use, poor management of the bullpen, etc. It’s what they like and choose to do. Others, just enjoy watching the players’ performances, and aren’t really into tactics.

858 – I defend him and I want to win as much as anyone and I’m not brainwashed (and have probably been a Cardinal fan a lot longer than most on here).

There were 27 Cardinal outs today, NJ. The Cards struck out 14 times – more than 50% of the time. How many times did MM strike out?

After every Cardinals loss, there’s a certain “element” that just has to blame it on the manager. It’s a compulsion. So sad. I don’t give the manager praise when the players knock the cover off the ball, and I don’t attribute managerial blame when the players fail miserably on offense like today.

    NJ –

    Wong – 0 for 4
    DeJong – 0 for 4
    Molina – 0 for 2
    Piscotty – 0 for 4
    Garcia – 0 for 4
    Grichuk – 0 for 3

3 hits all day, and Fowler got 2 of them. With the terrific game that Lynn pitched, we should have won by 3 or 4 runs at least. You want to blame the above embarrassing offense performance by those players on Matheny? Good luck doing that.

Would look for the addition of a third baseman this off season. Gyrorko is better in a super sub role. If Wisdom could only work on his OBP and K rate.

Best to not be sarcastic, but root for Voit to do well along with all other players on the active roster.
