well pugsleyaddams, I do wish I could take tomorrow off or leave early. I guess I could but I only have so much sick time and it has to last the year. so I have to be responsible. I will record it however and avoid any baseball scores so it seems live to me. I am looking forward to it though. hopefully we can start the season off right.
well we have a set roster now. I wonder who is going to be sent down when gyrko returns. im thinking robinson but I hope not. the office loves munoz but I don’t love his errors. to me his erroprs hurt more than his bat help but that’s my opinion.
tis a shame, I have to work this day. im hoping the cards win and get this season started off right. how we do in our division is going to decide our fate this year.
im hoping brebbia makes the roster. hes always been solid. to me left or right doesn’t really matter. I just want guys who can get outs.
well I think the deal highly benefits goldshmidt more than it does the cardinals. now if goldy performs as he has for at least 4 of the next 6 years then both benefit. but if he follows normal baseball patterns at his age, his stats will start angling downward. then he mostly benefits unless its just a small decline. its actually the kind of deal the cardinals usually make although its a little more than usual. they tend to give proven guys that are at or slightly past their prime the money as opposed to taking a chance on someone like harper who has huge potential and is younger. I personally would have preferred harper if it was possible but I also like goldy so im glad he got paid and I hope he has some great years for the cardinals. with carpenters and ozunas injury problems, it may just not be enough.
well it doesn’t surprise me that ponce got sent down and gomber either really. they both still need more work to get major league ready. im sure we will need them down the road.
I would consider this a win for the angels if trout produces the same output over the next ten years on average as he has since coming in the league. yea trout will be very wealthy but its possible he could have been even more. but if hes happy, that’s all that matters. it kind of hurts baseball to a certain extent. having your big stars out there in the news during contract time can get your sport much needed play. the sad thing is that if the angels cant ever get it together, trout may never get to be the super star that his numbers show him to be. now personally ive watched him play some games and I haven’t really seen that greatness either but I know his numbers dictate otherwise though I don’t get into all the advanced metrics people use nowadays. but I don’t watch him every day so theres that. im glad hes getting a great contract.
not surprised by any of the cuts. arozarena is somebody I like. he czan definitely use extra at bats in the minors. though personally id rather have him on the team as opposed to fowler and/or gyorko but that aint gonna happen.
I don’t mind most of the changes though there are a few I don’t like. I don’t like them limiting the September call ups, doesn’t make sense to me. cutting trades off at july 31, im not a big fan of though it doesn’t really bother me that much. I do like that they moved the injured list back to 15 days. teams were exploiting the ten day list too much. you cant give teams anything without them doing that.
well in my opinion the cardinals are wrong in their dealings with Flaherty and hicks and probably others. yea they may be young players but hicks especially was used just like an old vet but yet the cardinals use the system to not pay them their worth. are the cardinals alone no but that doesn’t make it right. with the way these young guys are trotted out there and pitch their hardest every pitch, they are one pitch away from an injury that may prevent them from getting all that money in the future some people mention. im not saying they had to go crazy and give them ridiculous money, they deserved more just based on their efforts last year. it isn’t like the cardinals have really opened up their vault the last few years.
gomber didn’t do himself any favors with his performance today. getting behind and not being able to locate fastballs. layne didn’t do much better and im not sure he has the rope gomber does. gomber pitched well for us last year. the mets starter totally shut the cardinals down though they had a couple of opportunities.
I saw on the cardinals website that they are projecting shreve, mayers and cecil to make the opening day roster. also that robinson will make the team as a bench player. I totally agree with robinson. munoz is a great hitter but I think robinson can hit as well plus hes left handed and I think hes better defensively. munoz made too many errors in a short period of playing time plus a lot of those errors happened late in games. if it don’t work out, they can always make changes. the pitchers are slated to be there because they don’t have options. personally id chuck cecil and probably shreve. I think mayers could be good though he did struggle at times last year. lets give some of these other guys a chance.
well I don’t personally care for the robot umpire. a strike is not as easy as the lines on a tennis court. im all for replays and getting stuff right but heck just go all the way and make the players androids and take all the humanity out of the game if you are gonna go that route. I also don’t like moving the mound back to 62.5 feet. its stupid. you want more balls in play, require the teams teach guys how to actually put the ball in play and reward players that actually do that. pushing the distance back is just going to mean even more injuries. also guys just rearing back and throwing their hardest all the time isn’t the best thing for them or the league. my opinion is that pitchers are like quarterbacks in this sense. qbs get protected because they really sell the nfl. yea people like the other guys but you have to have people that can get them the ball and they have the ball the most. pitchers have the ball the most in baseball. sure people like homeruns but they also like it when pitchers go out there and throwing a well pitched game over 7 innings or more. starting pitchers have been the stars in mlb right there with the other superstars, bigger a lot of the time. having a game where the bullpen is pitching more innings than the starters isn’t good for the game in my opinion.
I don’t think spring averages are something that should normally concern a team. though with fowler, I would be paying attention. to be honest, the cardinals really don’t have guys outside of goldy and maybe carpenter that you would consider really good average hitters. to counter this they need to learn more patience at plate and not chasing bad pitches plus using good situational hitting. I do think oneill has looked a lot better this spring. in the end, our pitching is gonna have to be stand out, in my opinion anyway. that goes for a lot of teams but I think some other teams have some lee way and I think Milwaukee is one of them. cubs im not sure totally about but we will see.
when you vote for someone, its your vote. so basically you as the voter set your own criteria. I agree a players stats with another team or teams shouldn’t figure in but withholding a vote for a player because they ended up playing for a rival or in the case of the cubs an enemy, is perfectly fine. in this case it was a rival. now I was young and it was before 24/7 sports news so I didn’t know why he got traded or how he ended up a met even but didn’t really matter. though I may soften as time goes forward if he doesn’t get in this year. I stand by my picks this year regardless.
I don’t think goldy will sign a contract that’s mostly favorable to the cardinals. he knows how consistent and durable hes been. to me the only way the cardinals are gonna get him to sign early is to give him either a lot of money over shorter years say three or four or a longer contract that is till got a lot of money spread out along with incentives. but you never know.
gscottar, cant fault a vote for Hernandez. it still bugs me he went to the mets back in the day. but a great first baseman he was.
wacha looked good today. our hitting was ok but we were helped out by some bad defense on the marlins side. if it just came down to straight talent, I think they would have some really hard choices to make with the bench. I know options and stuff like that will play into it also so will make it easier on them. I like munoz bat but im not fond of his defense. yea he can play lots of places but he cant really play any really well. I personally would like a left handed batter whether munoz is on team or not.
well I voted for tudor and morris. tudor is a no brainer to me, he pitched awesomely for the cardinals and that’s what you are voting on here in my mind, not overall career. in fact, you could argue based on his cardinal records and stats, he is one of their best pitchers. morris was also a really good pitcher for them. if I was just purely voting without other considerations I would take rolen over morris cause I think rolen is one of the best third baseman ever period and definitely belongs in cardinals hall cause he was great when he was here but I usually vote for the older of the candidates that I believe deserves it cause as time goes on they will get less votes normally.
blackhills, well I never heard him say that but thanks for the info. that’s all fine If all he wants is stability. but it also locks him in with a team that doesn’t have a good recent history. if all that is true, why didn’t he just sign that contract with the nationals and build his championship team there. im sure the nationals would have went the three extra years if that was a problem. I also heard that he turned down 4 years 180 million dollars with the dodgers. unless he doesn’t feel hes that good and wont be able to back it up and get a great contract in 4 years that’s financially not that good of a decision if true. say he being honest and wanted the longterm stability. having an opt out in 5 or six years wouldn’t have kept him from recruiting. in the end im happy for him but if the phillies don’t really turn their fortunes around over the next 5 to 10 years, I don’t want to hear him whining about being there.
well im glad harper got a good contract. though to be honest, if I was him I would have wanted some kind of opt out after five years. its why I think machado got the better deal. though I think he is a great player and would have really helped the cardinals, I think he has less impact other than maybe putting people in the stands. the phillies haven’t really been close to be good for a while. yea they were good for a minute last year but overall lately they haven’t been good. so an opt out would have been nice in case they don’t get some other players around him. but maybe he wanted the security of more money and knowing where he will be playing for a long while over the chance to win.
I don’t think hes still injured. he made a terrible play on a ball hit to him the other day. the fact that he never played right field much cant be used now plus if you are an outfielder, you better be able to play in more than one spot in the outfield. now I admit that I have never thought fowler was that goods. yea he may have had these awesome stats people are posting years ago but he never passed the eye test for me and also we are in the now, not years ago. plus he played for the low life cubs, which we should never take a player from other than maybe a minor leaguer or sign a cub in free agency. so theres that.
I think harper in my opinion should bet on himself. if the dodgers are will to give 35 to 40 million a year for a shorter contract, id do it over a long term deal with the phillies. then if he shows that hes worth it, they probably would go back and extend him down the road. I still feel he is a better offensive option all around than what the cardinals have in the outfield by quite a bit and having him around for a while could have been nice but alas its not to be.
I don’t mind this move. he probably is better than pena far as if something happened and yadi had to be out a while. though hes not a lot better by any means.
I like mikolas and he did have a great year, but I still think they should have waited. I still think he would have given the cardinals first shot. now its true, he might have cost a little more at say the middle or during the offseason if he had another solid year but if he ends up not being as good this year or goes out and has an injury filled year or has to have some major surgery, then this will look just as bad as fowlers deal. the cardinals just never make sense. last year they bend over backwards and try to way overspend for Stanton who isn’t a cardinal type player and strikes out more often than not, wont try to make a legitimate offer to harper who while flawed, hits line drives and more importantly doesn’t swing at every ball he sees. that on top of giving an average guy like fowler too much money. I really like mikolas and I do hope he this turns out to be a good deal all around but this hope and pray thing they do is worrisome.
