Three straight fastballs down the middle and Goldy can’t touch them. Bad lighting in the park today.
Hader looks to be in mid season form.
He certainly put em where the hitters couldn’t touch them ..but the shadows really played a part. He was throwing it in the middle of the zone for the most part and knew the Cards wouldn’t be able to touch it.
The top three in the lineup are 0-8 with 5 Ks today. Not what you want from your table setters.
Make that 0-11 with 7 Ks.

The top 3 looked awful in the box today and Mikolas lost his concentration often. The only bright side is Mikolas started last year on the same foot.
Ozuna with a bad jump allows an easy single. But Dejong and Wong turn a nice double play on a tailing liner to erase one.
I think just about every swing the Cards have taken against Hader has looked like they were swinging for the fences. Singles can score runs, too, guys.
Down to the final out.
GOOD – Wong (though I hope he doesn’t start swinging for the fences now).
— Bullpen – can’t ask for much more from your middle relieversBAD – Mikolos. Not terrible except for the long balls. Hope he figures it out.
UGLY – the offense other than Wong and Bader. Hope this is just a learning curve with Alberts methods and I hope it is not as steep as it appears.
Another foot and Jmart would have been a hero.
Ozuna needs to try running. He might catch more balls that way.
or pinch hit Martinez for Fowler and left Wong in the game considering he’d already hit 2 home runs.
I agree on pinch hitting for Wong. Hader is a tough lefty and Martinez almost hit it out. But Fowler is so weak from the right side that Munoz made so much more sense.
Mikolas and Goldy having a bad day on the same day will not bode well for us. But Wong may prove to be the player we thought he could be. I’d be ok with a 161-1 season!
Eciting start to the 2019 campaign. With the players we have, I am not a big fan of the lineup construction. Think I would would move Wong up to 2 versus righties, and Bader vs lefties. Then go Goldy, Ozuna, DeJong, Dex, Molina, Wong/Bader.
I would to put Fowler in the 2 spot, so if he hits and is getting on base I would do that. But for now maybe go the Wong/Bader way, get Goldy down to more of a run production spot, and go with it for awhile.
Talk about a “lucky” catch! JMart’s belt was hit in the absolute precise location for two things to occur…..for the outfielder to catch the ball and for him to look like a stud making the catch. Sprinkle in the circumstances… .2 outs….Brewers holding to the always precarious 1 run lead…..bottom of the 9th……Brewer fans already in a frenzied state with their near untouchable closer mowing down Cardinal after Cardinal with the greatest of ease. And walla! You have yourself a highlight reel snipet that will have all of the novice baseball fans going absolutely ga-ga. Cain’s game ending lucky catch certainly was not a fantastic catch…..and it wasn’t chopped liver either. On a difficulty scale of 1-10, I would give it a 6.
well this is my take. overall a great game to watch. it was nice to see the bottom part of the lineup hit. liked seeing bader try to bunt, though it didn’t work out. I personally would have liked to see him try to steal that one time he was on base after mikolas struck out trying to advance him. I know carpenter a homerun threat but id rather be aggressive than hope for something. top of the lineup struggled mightily. I thought mikolas was ok, just a little off. I thought leone and brebbia were really solid. gant was ok as well. we struck out too much but we faced some tough pitching. overall a good effort, just not good enough like the manager said.
Though anyone would have preferred a win, the Cards have traditionally not been good in their openers. Here is their record prior to yesterday, per Cardinals Media Relations.
“The Cardinals are 58-67-2 (.456 win pct.) overall on Opening Day, including a 23-35-2 (.383) mark on the road.”
(I am curious about the two ties, but too busy to look them up.)
