Cardinals 2024 Arizona Fall League Recap

photo: Thomas Saggese and Ben Johnson (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

Reviewing final results of all eight St. Louis Cardinals prospects who competed in the 2024 Arizona Fall League. Second baseman Thomas Saggese led the way.

Manager Ben Johnson’s Glendale Desert Dogs finished the 2024 Arizona Fall League season in a three-way tie for second place at 16-14, missing out on the postseason by the narrowest edge, the tiebreaker.

To conclude our annual coverage, it is time to review the results of the eight Cardinals prospects who participated in the showcase, three position players and five pitchers.

Thomas Saggese

Thomas Saggese had a breakout performance in the AFL, named a Fall Star and the only Cardinal on the All-AFL Team. The second baseman slashed .391/.524/.591/1.118 with two home runs, 10 RBI and 16 walks in 82 plate appearances.  He had a rough week to end the season, hitting 3-for-13 before missing the final four games after the Fall Stars Game while the Desert Dogs were pushing for a postseason spot.

Leonardo Bernal

Leonardo Bernal dealt with some growing pains, but the catcher turned his offensive results around in the final few weeks. He increased his batting average from .250 after four weeks to .304 at the end of the schedule and finished with a .764 OPS in 51 plate appearances after having a .692 mark through five weeks.

Nathan Church

Nathan Church had a similar experience to Bernal but was more reliable throughout. The outfielder increased his batting average from .333 after four weeks to .364 at the close of the AFL. The left-handed hitter went 4-for-9 in his last two weeks to conclude with an .815 OPS in 58 plate appearances.

Ixan Henderson

Ixan Henderson finished with a 1-1 record and a 4.50 ERA, by allowing six earned runs in 12 innings pitched, five of which came in a rough week five.  The left-hander made two starts and three relief appearances with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 2.00, striking out 16 batters but walking eight.

Trent Baker

Right-hander Trent Baker did not make an appearance in the final three weeks of the AFL schedule, finishing with a 2.57 ERA while allowing two hits and holding the opponents to a .091 batting average in his seven innings pitched over one start and two relief appearances.

Alex Cornwell

In the final week, Alex Cornwell continued to improve, dropping his ERA from 5.40 to 4.66 thanks to his 1 ⅓ inning scoreless outing on November 12. Overall, Cornwell struck out nine in 9 ⅔ innings pitched over seven games, but hitters saw the ball well out of his hand as they hit .325 against him. Cornwell was not protected from the December 11 Rule 5 Draft, so he is eligible to be selected by another organization.

Matt Svanson

Matt Svanson finished the AFL with an 0-1 record while converting both his save opportunities.  The right-hander logged a 5.91 ERA after allowing two runs in one inning in the final game on November 14.  Swanson struggled with the longball, giving up three in just 10 ⅔ innings pitched in nine relief appearances, but he was fanning hitters left and right, with 15 strikeouts to just two walks. Earlier this week, Svanson was rewarded with a spot on St. Louis’ 40-man roster.

Brycen Mautz

Lefty Brycen Mautz struggled in the AFL, with an 8.10 ERA, 11 strikeouts, and seven walks.  In two separate outings in the final week, Mautz gave up three runs on three hits in two innings.  Despite the high ERA, Mautz did not surrender any long balls in his 10 AFL innings pitched over eight appearances out of the bullpen.

Glendale Desert Dogs 6, Scottsdale Scorpions 7

The Glendale Desert Dogs (16-14) fell to the Scottsdale Scorpions (16-14) 7-6 on Thursday at Camelback Ranch to miss the Arizona Fall League postseason on a tiebreaker.

Four St. Louis Cardinals participated.  Leonardo Bernal started at catcher and batted sixth, Nathan Church started in right field, batting seventh and Brycen Mautz and Matt Svanson pitched in relief.

Leonardo Bernal

Bernal went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two RBI.  He grounded out to begin the second, hit an RBI double in the fourth, an RBI single in the fifth to tie the game, lined out in the seventh, and walked in the ninth.  He was replaced by a pinch runner in the ninth.

Bernal committed a throwing error in the field and allowed four runners to steal successfully.

Nathan Church

Church hit 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Church singled in the second and stole second, singled in the fourth, popped out in the fifth, grounded into an RBI forceout in the seventh, and flew out in the ninth.

Matt Svanson

Svanson came into pitch the seventh inning, allowing two runs on two hits.  The right-hander gave up back-to-back home runs to lead off the inning and then forced a flyout and two groundouts.

Brycen Mautz

Brycen Mautz threw a scoreless ninth inning.  The lefty retired the side in order with a lineout, a groundout, and another lineout.

The Desert Dogs ended the season in a tie for second but missed the postseason because they lost the tiebreakers to the Scorpions and the Salt River Rafters.

Cardinals Arizona Fall League Notebook – November 12, 2024

photo: Ixan Henderson (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

The Glendale Desert Dogs defeated Mesa on Monday. Starter Ixan Henderson fanned four and allowed one run in three innings. Matt Svanson added two scoreless relief frames. We recap all eight Cardinals’ AFL results through Week 5.

Results from the Arizona Fall League game played on Monday, November 11.

Glendale Desert Dogs 7 at Mesa Solar Sox 3

Two St. Louis Cardinals participated in the Glendale Desert Dogs (15-12) 7-3 win over the Mesa Solar Sox (13-14) on Monday at Sloan Park.

Coming back from a rough outing in style, Ixan Henderson started the game and earned his first win this season. The lefty pitched three innings, allowing one run on five hits while walking one and striking out four.  Matt Svanson came into the game in the sixth, throwing two scoreless innings to hold the lead.

Ixan Henderson

Henderson gave up two Mesa singles to start the game but retired the next three on a strikeout and two flyouts.

In the second, the left-hander struck out the first hitter, walked the next, forced the third to lineout, and secured a strikeout for the third out.

In the third, he yielded a solo homer and a single, struck out a batter, picked off a runner, surrendered a single, and forced his final batter to fly out. Henderson threw 57 pitches of which 38 were strikes.

On Monday, Henderson lowered his AFL ERA to 4.50 after a rough week in which he was charged with five earned runs in just 3 2/3 innings.

Matt Svanson

Svanson retired the side in the sixth, forcing a flyout and two groundouts.  He had the same success in the seventh, with two ground outs and a line out in between. 12 of his 18 pitches were strikes and four of his six outs collected were via the ground ball.

After throwing four scoreless innings this week, Svanson knocked his ERA down to 4.66.  He also collected three more strikeouts to bring his AFL total to 15.

Cardinals stats through five weeks

Left-hander Brycen Mautz pitched two scoreless innings this past week, allowing two hits while not walking anybody.  The solid week doesn’t make his season stats much prettier as his ERA is still 6.75.

Alex Cornwell had a decent week, pitching 2 2/3 innings, allowing one run and striking out two.  The lefty’s ERA is now down to 5.40, but he has given up 12 hits in just 8 1/3 innings pitched.

Right-hander Trent Baker did not make an appearance this week.

Thomas Saggese had a rough week by his standards.  The Arizona Fall League All-Star’s OPS dropped 83 points to 1.118 and his batting average fell from .431 to .391 after he went 3-for-13 in the last week.

Nathan Church

Nathan Church raised his OPS to .766 by going 4-for-10 with two RBI.  Despite seeing the ball with a .348 batting average and just four strikeouts, Church has struggled to walk, with only two in his 48 plate appearances.

Leonardo Bernal had a decent week despite limited playing time.  The catcher went 3-for-7 to raise his batting average to .282 and his OPS to .692.

Glendale remains tied with Salt River for second/third place, two games behind Surprise. The final three games matter, as the second and third place teams will face off on Friday for the right to play the first-place squad for the league title on Saturday.

Tuesday’s game: at Surprise Saguaros, RHP Andrew Painter (1-0, 2.08) vs. Shane Panzini RHP (1-1, 5.25) 2:30 CT.

Cardinals Arizona Fall League Notebook – November 8, 2024

photo: Leonardo Bernal and Nathan Church (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

The Glendale Desert Dogs cruised to an 8-1 win over the first-place Surprise Saguaros on Thursday. Cardinals catcher Leonardo Bernal reached base four times and plated two. Nathan Church and Thomas Saggese were on base twice each.

Results from the Arizona Fall League game played on Thursday, November 7.

Glendale Desert Dogs 8 at Surprise Saguaros 1

Three St. Louis Cardinals participated in the Glendale Desert Dogs (14-12) 8-1 win over the first-place Surprise Saguaros (16-8) on Thursday at Surprise Stadium.

Starting catcher Leonardo Bernal went 3-for-4 plus a walk and two RBI from the sixth spot.  Left fielder Nathan Church was 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored while hitting second.  Thomas Saggese was third in the lineup as the designated hitter, going 0-for-3 with two walks and a run scored.

Bernal started with an RBI single past the second baseman in the first, struck out in the third, hit another RBI single to the same spot to drive in Saggese in the fifth, walked in the seventh, and singled in the ninth.

Leonardo Bernal

Bernal committed a throwing error from behind the dish while allowing the Saguaros to steal three times and throwing out one.

Nathan Church

In the first, Church singled for the first Glendale hit of the game and later came home on an RBI single. He hit an RBI single in the second but was later caught stealing. Church flied out in the fourth, struck out in the sixth, and grounded out in the eighth.

Church had an outfield assist in the fourth when a relay caught a runner attempting to advance to third.

Thomas Saggese

Saggese flied out in the first, walked in the second and walked in the fifth and later came home on Bernal’s RBI single. He grounded out in the seventh and popped out in the eighth to the first baseman.

The Desert Dogs will be off until Monday due to the Arizona Fall League All-Star break. It will be the final week of league play.

With Thursday’s win, Glendale is tied for second place, three games behind Surprise. The top three teams in the league reach the playoffs, to be held next Friday and Saturday. However, four teams are within two games of second place, so the participants could easily change based on the outcome of the final four games, to be played this coming Monday through Thursday.

The Home Run Derby, with no Cardinals participating, will be this Friday night. The Fall Stars Game will be held on Saturday. Rosters will be announced on Friday. Sunday will be a league-wide off day.

Monday’s game: at Mesa Solar Sox (13-13), TBD vs. TBD 4:30 CT.

Cardinals Arizona Fall League Notebook – November 5, 2024

photo: Thomas Saggese (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

The Glendale Desert Dogs lost a wild 13-11 contest at Salt River on Monday. Four Cardinals played. Thomas Saggese doubled and walked, Nathan Church singled and scored and Ixan Henderson and Alex Cornwell pitched in relief. Manager Ben Johnson was ejected.

Results from the Arizona Fall League game played on Monday, November 4.

Glendale Desert Dogs 11 at Salt River Rafters 13

The Glendale Desert Dogs (12-10) fell to the Salt River Rafters (13-10) in a wild 13-11 slugfest on Monday at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.  Four Cardinals participated in the loss.

Thomas Saggese started at second base, Nathan Church entered as a defensive replacement in right field, and Alex Cornwell and Ixan Henderson pitched in relief.

Thomas Saggese

In five plate appearances, Saggese doubled and walked.  The number three batter flied out in the first to the right fielder. In the third, he doubled and tried to steal third base. Saggese was successful as the third baseman bobbled the throw for an error (see lead photo). He did not score, however. With the bases loaded, the Dogs batter hit a weak chopper in front of home plate. With nowhere to go, Saggese was tagged out by the third baseman.

Saggese grounded out to the shortstop in the fourth, walked in the sixth but was stranded, and grounded out in the eighth.

Nathan Church

Nathan Church entered the game in the sixth, going 1-for-2 with a run scored. He singled in the seventh and came home on an RBI single but flied out in the ninth to the center fielder.

Ixan Henderson

Struggling with his control and perhaps a tight strike zone, Ixan Henderson took his first AFL loss plus a blown save. He allowed four runs on a hit while walking four and striking out one in 2/3 of an inning pitched.

The lefty entered the game in the fourth, walking the first batter and then giving up a double to put two runners in scoring position. The left-hander threw a wild pitch that let one run score, forced a groundout to the third baseman, walked the next three batters to force in a run, and struck out the final batter he faced.

At that point, Henderson had already thrown 37 pitches in the inning (with just 15 strikes), leading to Glendale manager Ben Johnson pulling him with two outs.

Ben Johnson ejected (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

Frustration may have boiled over for Johnson. Just moments later, in the top of the fifth with the Dogs down 9-6, Otto Kemp of the Phillies hit what appeared to be a home run down the left field line. The tally went on the board, but the Rafters protested. After a meeting among all four umpires, the call was reversed.

Johnson was incensed, with his booming protest audible all over the stadium. Soon, he was ejected. But the game was delayed because at Salt River, the clubhouses are only accessible from a gate in center field. Johnson had to take the long walk alone, sort of the reverse path of a reliever coming in from the bullpen.

Alex Cornwell

Alex Cornwell threw 2 2/3 innings, yielding one run on two hits while walking and striking out two. 18 of his 38 pitches went for strikes.

The lefty inherited the bases loaded in the fifth with one out and did a nice job escaping the jam.  The first batter hit a comebacker, allowing Cornwell to turn a 2-1-3 double play.  In the sixth, he retired the side with a strikeout, groundout, and lineout.  He walked the first two batters in the seventh and forced the next hitter to ground into a double play before giving up an RBI single.  Cornwell ended the inning by striking out the batter.

The Desert Dogs’ Sunday game that was suspended in the first inning due to rain will be made up on Tuesday as part of a doubleheader.

Tuesday’s games: at Scottsdale Scorpions (9-13), RHP Eriq Swan (0-0, 5.19) vs. Khristian Curtis RHP (1-1, 6.97) 5:30 CT (Game One), vs. Scottsdale Scorpions, RHP Andrew Painter (1-0, 2.70) vs. Kendry Rojas LHP (0-1, 8.10) 7:30 CT (Game Two).

Cardinals Arizona Fall League Notebook – November 4, 2024

photo: Thomas Saggese (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

The Glendale Desert Dogs were a victim of rain, with their Sunday game suspended in the first inning. Thomas Saggese struck out before play was stopped. We recap all eight Cardinals’ AFL results through Week 4.

Results from the Arizona Fall League game played on Sunday, November 3.

Glendale Desert Dogs 0 at Scottsdale Scorpions 0 (suspended)

The Glendale Desert Dogs’ (12-9) game against the Scottsdale Scorpions (9-12) was suspended during the bottom of the first due to rain on Sunday at Scottsdale Stadium.

Rain fell for a period prior to the game, but it had stopped by the 5:00 p.m. local time start. Even so, a decision was made to delay the first pitch by one hour. During that time, it did not rain at all. However, almost immediately upon the start of play, it began to pour.

Thomas Saggese was the only Cardinal in the starting lineup. The second baseman struck out in his first at-bat while hitting third in the batting order. In the above photo, fans were scurrying for cover as Saggese stepped up to the plate.

Thomas Saggese

In the AFL season, Saggese is slashing .431/.554/.647/1.201, leading the Desert Dogs in batting average, OBP, and OPS while also first with 12 walks. Among AFL leaders, Saggese is first in OBP, third in OPS and tied for fifth in walks.

Cardinals Through Week 4

Catcher Leonardo Bernal has struggled offensively, going 8-for-32 (.250) with seven singles and a home run.  Center fielder Nathan Church has been more reliable, hitting 12-for-36 (.333) with a triple, three RBI, and a .757 OPS.

Ixan Henderson

LHP Ixan Henderson has been solid, pitching 8 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run while walking three and striking out 11.  RHP Trent Baker has also been a reliable arm, posting a 1-1 record. Baker has a 2.57 ERA in seven innings pitched. The two are piggybacking starts.

LHP Alex Cornwell has had a rough start in the AFL, allowing four runs in j5 2/3 innings pitched for a 6.35 ERA.  RHP Matt Svanson has put up a 7.94 ERA with a save.  While he has struggled to keep runs from scoring, the reliever has fanned 12 in just 5 2/3 innings pitched.

LHP Brycen Mautz has allowed six runs in six innings pitched while striking out 10.  The lefty has held the opposition to a .190 batting average against, but he has struggled with walks as he has given up more walks, six, than hits, four.

In the AFL standings, the 12-9 Desert Dogs are two games behind first place Surprise (14-7).

Monday’s game: at Salt River Rafters (12-10), TBD vs. TBD 7:30 CT.

Four St. Louis Cardinals participated in the Glendale Desert Dogs’ 8-4 victory over the Peoria Javelinas. Second baseman Thomas Saggese went 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, two RBI, and two runs scored. Nathan Church, Trent Baker, and Ixan Henderson also played.

Glendale Desert Dogs 8, Peoria Javelinas 4

The Glendale Golden Dogs (10-7) crushed the Peoria Javelinas (5-11) 8-4 on Sunday at Camelback Ranch. Second baseman Thomas Saggese, center field Nathan Church, and left-handed pitcher Ixan Henderson started in today’s game.  Trent Baker pitched two innings of relief.

Thomas Saggese

Saggese hit second and went 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, two RBI, and two runs scored.  He walked in the first but was thrown out while trying to steal second later in the inning.

The second baseman led off the fourth inning with a single and was brought home on an RBI double in the next at-bat.  In the fifth, Saggese’s two-RBI double brought home the game-winning run, making the score 5-1 and he later came around to score on an RBI single.

Saggese lined out to the right fielder in the sixth and walked in the eighth to end his day.

Nathan Church

Church was seventh in the batting order and was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Church grounded out to the shortstop in the second.  His RBI single in the fourth extended the Golden Dog’s lead to 3-1.  He ended his day with a flyout to the left fielder in the fifth and a pop-out to the second baseman in the eighth.

Ixan Henderson

Henderson started for Glendale, throwing three innings, and allowing one run, none earned, on a hit while walking one and striking out four.  He forced the first batter to fly out to the right fielder, struck out the second batter, walked the third, and forced a ground out to the first baseman.

In the second inning, he struck out the side in order.  In the third, he forced the first hitter to ground out to the catcher, the second batter reached on a fielding error and Henderson plunked the third batter.  Henderson then picked off the runner on second before giving up an RBI single.  He earned the final out on a forceout to the shortstop.

Trent Baker

Baker earned his first win this season, pitching two scoreless innings and yielding three walks while striking out two.  He came into the game in the fourth, striking out the first batter and forcing the next two to fly out and ground out.

In the fifth, he struck out the first batter and forced the second one to pop out to Saggese.  He walked the next three batters, but Baker forced the final hitter to ground out to end the inning.

The Desert Dogs are off Monday.

Tuesday’s game: at Salt River Rafters (8-8), TBD vs. TBD 2:30 CT.
