The Glendale Desert Dogs (3-2) were crushed by the Scottsdale Scorpions (2-3) 10-2 on Saturday at Scottsdale Stadium in 101-degree heat.
Thomas Saggese started at second base and Trent Baker was brought in as a relief pitcher in the third inning. Saggese went 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk, two RBI, and a run scored.
The number two batter walked in the first, hit a two-run bomb to right field in the third to tie the game at two apiece, and flied out to the center fielder in the fifth and the seventh.
Baker took the loss in his AFL debut after pitching two innings and allowing two runs on a hit (a home run) while plunking one and walking one.
Baker entered the game in the third, hitting the first batter, forcing a double play, walking the next batter, and then giving up a two-run shot to right field to give up the lead before retiring the final batter on a flyout.
Baker only needed six pitches in the fourth, retiring the three batters he faced on a lineout, flyout, and groundout. After 28 pitches thrown, including 16 strikes, Baker’s day was done.
Glendale is off Sunday.
