In the AFL, Glendale improved to 4-2 on Monday as four Cardinals contributed. LH Brycen Mautz fanned three in 1 1/3 relief frames. Nathan Church and Leonardo Bernal reached base three times each and Thomas Saggese twice.

Glendale Desert Dogs 5 at Peoria Javelinas 3
The Glendale Desert Dogs (4-2) defeated the Peoria Javelinas (2-4) 5-3 on Monday at Peoria Stadium.
Four St. Louis Cardinals prospects contributed to the win. Thomas Saggese batted fifth as the starting designated hitter. Leonardo Bernal started at catcher and hit eighth. Right-fielder Nathan Church was sixth in the lineup. Brycen Mautz threw 1 1/3 perfect relief innings with three strikeouts.
Saggese reached base twice, going 1-for-4 with a walk. He grounded out in the first, flied out in the third, walked in the fifth, but was caught stealing second, singled in the seventh, and struck out looking in the ninth.
Church went 2-for-4 plus a walk, a stolen base and scored a run. He struck out swinging in the second, singled in the fourth, then stole second and was brought home by Bernal, popped out in the sixth, walked in the seventh, and singled in the ninth.
Bernal was 3-for-5, all singles, with a stolen base and an RBI. He struck out swinging in the second, drove in Church in the fourth on an RBI single, and later stole third. He singled in the sixth and the eighth but ended his game with a swinging strikeout. In the field, Bernal was given an error for catcher’s interference.
Mautz entered in a critical situation and produced. Glendale had just allowed the lead run with two outs in the fifth and two Peoria runners remained in scoring position. The lefty struck out his first batter to escape the jam. In the sixth, he forced the first batter to ground out and struck out the next two batters in eight pitches. 14 of his 20 total pitches went for strikes.
