Cardinals Minor League Notebook – September 1, 2024

On Saturday, the St. Louis Cardinals system went 3-1. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, C Chance Sisco singled, homered and plated five for Memphis. Other standouts include Alfonso Rivas, Ixan Henderson, Sammy Hernandez, Tre Richardson, Leonel Sequera and Jose Suarez.

Memphis 10 at Iowa 8

The Memphis Redbirds (26-30) completed a late comeback to beat the Iowa Cubs (25-31, CHC) 10-8 on Sunday at Principal Park.  Gordon Graceffo had a rough three inning start, allowing six runs on six hits while walking three and striking out four.

The Redbirds began with a bang when Alfonso Rivas III hit a two-out grand slam to right field in the first.

The Cubs responded in the second with a solo shot, an RBI double, an RBI groundout, and another RBI double. Iowa took the lead in the third with a two-RBI double. Ryan Shreve took the mound in the fourth and gave up a two-run homer to the third batter he saw, putting the Cubs up 8-4.

Mike Antico’s solo dinger to right field brought the game to within three.

Memphis brought the score to within one in the sixth on newcomer Chance Sisco’s two-RBI single.

The visitors took the lead in the eighth on Sisco’s three-run longball to center field.

Sisco hit 2-for-4 with a home run, five RBI, and a run scored.  Rivas III was 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk, four RBI, and two runs scored.  Antico went 1-for-5 with a home run.  The Redbirds totaled 10 runs on seven hits with six walks and 12 strikeouts.

Shreve pitched 2 2/3 innings, yielding two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out three.  Andre Granillo threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings, earning his third win while walking one and striking out two.  Chris Roycroft received his third save this season, giving up two hits while striking out one in two innings pitched.  Memphis allowed eight runs on 11 hits while walking six and striking out 11.

Springfield 1 at Wichita 6

The Springfield Cardinals (35-21) had no answers offensively during their 6-1 loss to the Wichita Wind Surge (23-33, MIN) on Saturday at Riverfront Stadium.  Starter Max Rajcic took his 10th loss this season, throwing 4 2/3 innings, and allowing five runs, two earned, on seven hits while walking one and striking out nine.

The Wind Surge struck first in the first with an RBI single and extended their lead to 6-0 in the fifth with a two-RBI single. After Rajcic allowed another batter to reach safely, Zane Mills took the mound and gave up a three-run homer.

The Cardinals put a run on the board in the eighth on Nathan Church’s RBI groundout.

Jeremy Rivas went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.  Leonardo Bernal went 2-for-4.  Rehabber Michael Siani was hitless with two walks and a strikeout.  The Cardinals totaled one run on three hits with four walks and nine strikeouts.

Mills pitched 2 1/3 innings, yielding one run, none earned, on five hits while striking out three.  Leonardo Taveras threw a scoreless inning, retiring three straight on three strikeouts.  Springfield allowed six runs, two earned, on 12 hits while walking one and striking out 15.

Sunday’s game: at Wichita, RHP Trent Baker (3-6, 5.53) vs. TBD 1:05 CT.

Peoria 8 at Beloit 4

The Peoria Chiefs (31-28) defeated the Beloit Sky Carp (27-32, MIA) 8-4 on Saturday at ABC Supply Stadium.  Starter Ixan Henderson earned his second win this season, throwing five innings, and allowing one run, none earned, on four hits while walking four and striking out four.

The Chiefs took an early lead on Tre Richardson’s RBI triple in the first. They extended their lead to 5-0 in the fourth on Won-Bin Cho’s RBI single, Trey Paige’s RBI groundout, and Sammy Hernandez’s two-run moonshot to left field.

Peoria added another one in the top of the fifth with Richardson’s RBI single.

Beloit tallied single runs in the bottom of the fifth and seventh on RBI singles.

The visiting Chiefs added two insurance runs in the top of the eighth on Trey Paige’s RBI single and Hernandez’s RBI sacrifice bunt.

The Sky Carp put two more on the board in the bottom of the eighth with a two-RBI single.

Roy Garcia yielded a run on three hits while walking one and striking out five in two innings pitched.  Tyler Bradt pitched two innings, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out two.  Peoria allowed four runs, three earned, on 11 hits while walking five and striking out 11.

Richardson went 2-for-3 with a triple, two walks, two RBI, and two runs scored.  Hernandez went 1-for-3 with a home run, three RBI, and a run scored.  Darlin Moquete was 2-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch and two runs scored.  The Chiefs totaled eight runs on 10 hits with three walks and 13 strikeouts.

Sunday’s game: at Beloit, RHP Darlin Saladin (5-2, 3.68) vs. Ike Buxton RHP (2-7, 5.22) 1:05 CT.

Palm Beach 12, Daytona 1

The Palm Beach Cardinals (41-17) crushed the Daytona Tortugas (30-27, CIN) 12-1 on Saturday at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.  Starter Leonel Sequera earned his first Class-A win, allowing one run on four hits while walking two and striking out five over six innings.

The Tortugas struck first in the third with an RBI fielder’s choice.

The Cardinals tied the game in the fourth with Ross Friedrick’s sacrifice fly.

Palm Beach took the lead in the fifth with Jose Cordoba’s two-RBI double, Jose Suarez’s two-RBI single, Jon Jon Gazdar’s RBI double, and Anyelo Encarnacion’s two-run bomb to left-center field.

Palm Beach added two more in both the sixth and seventh with Suarez’s two-RBI double and Lizandro Espinoza’s two-RBI double.

Gazdar went 3-for-5 with a triple, two doubles, an RBI, and two runs scored.  Suarez was 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, four RBI, and a run scored.  Encarnacion hit 1-for-3 with a homer, a walk, two RBI, and two runs scored.  The Cardinals totaled 12 runs on 11 hits with seven walks and eight strikeouts.

Michael Watson threw two scoreless innings, giving up a hit while striking out five.  Randel Clemente pitched a scoreless inning, yielding a hit while striking out one.  Palm Beach allowed one run on six hits while walking two and striking out 11.

Sunday’s game: vs. Daytona, TBD vs. TBD 10:00 CT.
