Well Rosenthal is not going to be healthy by Spring Training. The question is would they pay him a small salary for 2018 in anticipation of him being able to pitch by next September then all of 2019?
Would the Cardinals consider bringing Rosenthal back on a 2 year $8M deal? Pay him $1.5M next year while rehabbing then $6.5M in 2019?
I’m all for Yelich and Hosmer but we would still have to address the bullpen and rotation and I don’t know how much money our FO will be willing to spend. That is why the Giants trade might work. We would be taking on a lot of money but would be giving up some money also.
I really like Lance Lynn but do we really want him for 5 or 6 more years? We need a quality stopgap guy for a year or two until more of our highly acclaimed pitchers are ready. Samardjia isn’t great but he is only under contract 3 more years. If we really want a stopgap for one year we could bring Lackey back I suppose. After 2018 Lackey and Waino would be gone freeing up two more spots in the rotation.
Signing Lackey, Hosmer, and Wade Davis might be a good offseason but we still need to get rid of some of the OF clutter.
I’m also glad the Cubs didn’t get Verlander. Supposedly they were his first choice but they finally ran out of good prospects to deal.
Should be an interesting post-season. Of the 8 playoff teams I think 6 of them have a legitimate shot at winning the World Series, 7 if if you want to include Arizona.
Let’s send Fowler, Piscotty, Cecil and Gallen to the Giants for Samardjia and Melancon.
Samardjia and Waino provide veteran presence to the rotation while bringing up more of the rookies. Melancon solidifies the pen assuming he is healthy. Then try to come up with a package to trade for Yelich.

CMart, Samardjia, Wacha, Waino, Weaver or ReyesThere are a few contenders that might like him down the stretch if he is healthy. My bet is that he is traded before midnight.
I don’t think the Royals would be happy about adding Omaha or Lincoln.
I think the A’s will stay in the Bay Area. I don’t know about Tampa. Odds are they end up in Montreal.
Under that scenario if the Browns were placed in the West, the West would have six teams and the Central would have four teams.
The commissioner seems open to expansion but has stated that he doesn’t see anything happening until stadium resolutions can be found for Oakland and Tampa.
Jager, I would love to see us sign Hosmer, Lynn, and Davis but the three of them combined would probably add $55M-$60M to the payroll next year, which would bump it to $200M. That obviously isn’t happening.
As you correctly note, we need another starter, closer, and big bat. I think we can spend big on one of those three but the other two will have to be cheaper FA’s or trade for a younger player with a lower AAV.
I don’t mind throwing Reyes in the bullpen to see what he can do but we need help from the outside.
Holland has an option for next year so we don’t know if we will be a FA or not.
Wade Davis will be a pricey FA but I would be all over him. He has been lights out for the Cubs.
Or we could trade some of our offensive surplus for Brad Hand.
Again, not sure about the Carpenter/Martinez comment. Maybe that was from a different poster?? If they are talking about Jose Martinez I don’t think he will be a replacement for anyone.
Verlander is still good but the Tigers are finally acknowledging that they are in a rebuild situation so I’m sure they would like to shed Verlander’s contract. Personally I wouldn’t mind bringing Lynn back but it would take a 5 year deal to do so. Not sure that is wise.
I don’t know what you mean by trading for Carpenter’s replacement and get an old guy….Must be an inside joke…
Verlander would be an option as a stop gap because he is still really good and only under contract for two more years. 2020 is a vesting option that only kicks in if he is in the top 5 of Cy Young voting in 2019.
I feel confident that Pham has emerged. The only question with him is can he stay healthy for a full season. As for DeJong, I think it is unfair to label him Diaz 2.0. I’m sure there will be adjustments back and forth as the league tries different things with him but he has a lot more power that Diaz and that can make up for other areas. Plus he is a much better defender.
Many on this board, myself included, have consistently stated that this team needs to acquire a big bat over the winter. However, due to the emergence of Pham, Dejong, and others, the offense doesn’t seem as bleak as it once did. The rotation, however, looks shaky for next year. CMart is solid, Leake is only good for half of a season, Wacha is always one pitch away from a catastrophic injury, Waino is at best a no. 5 starter, and Lynn is most likely gone due to FA.
I say all of that to suggest that perhaps we allocate our payroll muscle to a big time starter. Instead of Stanton’s massive contract, how about Verlander? The AAV is high but only for a couple of years. He could bridge the gap to guys like Weaver, Flaherty, Hudson, and Alcantara. Lynn’s AAV might be a little lower than Verlander but Lynn will require at least 5 years, thus blocking the aforementioned prospects.
Upton is too streaky for my taste. He is having a good year this time but next season could be a total bust. I think he is too expensive to take a chance on.
I don’t think anyone advocated signing Hosmer for 6 yrs $25m/yr. I stated that it might take that to sign him though. I think the cost will be too high for the Cardinals to consider either Hosmer or Stanton so we should set our sights a little lower.
I think we would all prefer Hosmer to Belt but there is a price difference to consider. Belt is signed for four more years at $17M/year. I think Hosmer will get a five or six year deal at between $20m-$25M/year. The Yankees and Red Sox could end up bidding against each other for him.
As for Stanton, a couple of different reporters have recently stated that they are 99% sure the Cards would not be interested in taking on that contract, based on conversations with front office personnel.
