bccran, re: your comments on the pen. Although I think everyone agrees much needs to be done, seems like going with the SP surplus to fill the needs might be a viable approach…guys like Hudson and Gant. It would be cheaper and give the prospects a different look than Memphis. I don’t think I like making big moves and $$$ contracts for guys that seem to flame out as quickly as they rise.
Cards have done it before. It’s an interesting thought considering some people think that pitching staffs in a couple decades might have two “short starters” paired for some games.
Two or three pieces might do the trick if they are very high value types. But who really believes our current execs will acquire or trade for MVP-types or CYA-types — not happening. The improvement will be incremental, if at all. Our current roster construction is full of average, with some promising pieces on the horizon. And yes, Matheny is an area that could be targeted for incremental improvement. We have to hope this year’s version of the Cubs is closer to reality than last year’s version…and we can take a step or two forward ourselves.
Actually there were 30 outs today, so the math is a little off…but you make a good point. There isn’t a single manager in the league that has struck out fewer times than Matheny has this year. That’s got to be what sets him apart.
And I bet when he yanked Lyons to set up the Posey vs Oh matchup, he told Oh to not give up a hit. Something probably got lost in the translation and Oh didn’t understand the message, or Oh just decided to give up the hit regardless of anything Matheny said. Who could’ve seen this outcome happening?Piscotty, Molina, and the pen turn out to be the goats with the game on the line. Gave another one away. Too bad for Lynn.
My thoughts are pretty much in line with those of forsch, so I want retype the details. Would love to upgrade SS, 1B and RF and have DeJong/Gyorko combining for 3B/utility. Carp and either Grichuk or Piscotty would be dealt.
I wouldn’t give the Cards any more credit for “knowing” something other than they know their hand is forced to cover Gyorko’s loss for a couple weeks.

My first thought was Weaver don’t need no stinking bullpen. After checking though, he’s been great tonight, but not efficient — currently over 90 pitches after 5 innings. But I’ll go out on a limb and say were okay since there will be no temptation to let Mayers get hammered for almost a full run through their lineup.
Yep, when they’re struggling to get anyone out, you hate to give them one with the middle of the order up.
No doubt Yadi is not ideal for 5th in the batting order…for more than one reason. Looking at those numbers, I guess Wong is the biggest surprise overall to me considering what my expectations were in late March for guys on the 40-man.
I believe the FO itself will feel like they have to deliver something this off-season, if for nothing else than their own longevity.
As for who goes, there shouldn’t be many untouchables if it helps us meet critical needs. I think it’s hard to name specific players we will deal at this point because it will be more demand driven rather than supply driven. We want value for what we give up and that only comes by fitting other teams’ specific needs when your dealing away what we have to offer. We don’t have many universally and heavily desired chips.
Seems like we do strike out a lot across the board. It also seems to me that we aren’t good at situational hitting either. I suppose those two things couple together often. That’s why I said what I said about Piscotty and Grichuk in the 9th. When I get time in the next day or so, I’ll satisfy my curiosity by comparing our stats against other teams.
As for some of the discussion in this thread by Bw52 and colhusker, I thought I’d take a look at some of our key individuals. Here are some relevant individual stats for K and BB rates by order of OPS. I guess it gives an idea of how the individual’s peripherals are supporting the individual’s overall effectiveness at the plate:

Just assume Grichuk is a K anytime he comes up. This team strikes out far to often.
Yep, neither guy seems to have any idea what kind of pitch they are swinging at. Piscotty’s last strike was with his head pulled off at least 90 degrees from where it should be directed and his eyes were closed…maybe he was in the middle of an untimely blink, but it looked bad.
It’s going to be hard to win a lot of games if Piscotty and Grichuk keep coming up in key spots. Some very bad swings, especially by Piscotty, coming from those two in the 9th when we needed to end it. Would’ve like to have seen Martinez in for Piscotty at that point…kinda knew what Piscotty was going to do.
Excellent catch by Pham in the 9th to keep the Rays off the board. Brebbia with 4 outs of scoreless relief. Game tied 2-2. Stage is set for another walk off.
Gyorko on 10-day DL. Strained hamstring, but no tear. They said they hope he’s back in a couple weeks, and if so, it would be a relatively minor hammy injury.
CardRedSox4Ever, the likelihood of none of your top 3 happening is greater than all 3 getting done. Certainly though, they’ve got to at least make a dent in #1. The recent comatose performance by our execs is a big disappointment. When combined with their overstatements of what they are going to do, followed by excuses after not delivering, disappointment turns into irritation. Not that I have to agree with everything, but pick a direction and go. Standing still hasn’t been and isn’t going to be the answer.
If you acquire Hosmer, you have to trade Carp. He just wouldn’t fit anywhere. It’s painful to think of any options beyond trading him. You know Matheny would keep plugging Carp in at 2B and 3B, setting the stage for more defensive chaos. Mo has to eliminate the team’s warts, not move them around.
The Wonger has got to learn to hold the tag on the steal attempts, instead of making the snap/swipe tag and then quickly showing to ball to the ump. Souza overslid the bag and would’ve been out. It’s a mistake the Wonger has made several times this year. That’s just ONE SNAFU EXAMPLE that’s an insult to smart baseball I’d like to see our manager/coaches clean up. MoMo’s base running blunder would be another.
And while I’m ranting I guess, why is Duke pitching on a mound in St Louis? Pen is getting killed tonight due to Wach’s poor outing and they’ve got Sparky starting on the mound tomorrow night to likely help them make yet another early appearance. Winning is obviously not a high priority for Mo this year. By all means, keep doing nothing…it has worked so well thus far.
