Thursday: Pearce

Sunday: GantAugust 25, 2017 at 9:02 am #31586Columnist Ortiz believes Leake will start in this game and because of it, the Cardinals are giving up on 2017.
August 26, 2017 at 7:31 am #31671Leake is officially named to start.
August 26, 2017 at 12:58 pm #3169334 games left, and the Reds are only 16 games back of the Cards for the 2nd WC spot, which is a more realistic perspective than any chance of the Cards making the playoffs. Mo’s interview yesterday pointed to Leake’s early season success as a reason to keep him in the starting rotation now, so agree front office has given up on the season. Just wish they had admitted this during spring training when we all saw trouble brewing with the lineup and pitching staffs.
Top 3 off season To-Do list:
1) complete overhaul of the bullpen
2) trade: Grichuk, Piscotty, Carpenter, Lynn (let him go to FA), Leake
3) find a new managerAugust 26, 2017 at 5:26 pm #31698CardRedSox4Ever, the likelihood of none of your top 3 happening is greater than all 3 getting done. Certainly though, they’ve got to at least make a dent in #1. The recent comatose performance by our execs is a big disappointment. When combined with their overstatements of what they are going to do, followed by excuses after not delivering, disappointment turns into irritation. Not that I have to agree with everything, but pick a direction and go. Standing still hasn’t been and isn’t going to be the answer.
August 26, 2017 at 7:02 pm #31699Top of the 4th, Rays up 2-0…so far in 3 innings we’ve managed a whole walk, no hits just 1 walk…
August 26, 2017 at 7:15 pm #31703Top of the 5th now, Rays 3-0 now, Grichuk finally got the Cards first hit…
August 26, 2017 at 7:18 pm #31704Brad Miller (BA .102) rips a single to right field.
August 26, 2017 at 7:58 pm #31710Cards pulled to within 3-2, but then Leake turned around and gave up a solo homer to the shortstop (who had two all season), his 3rd HR allowed tonight.

ParticipantThis Snell is a really good pitcher. What’s his record again?
August 26, 2017 at 8:34 pm #31713St. Louis tied the score in B8th, but Gyorko pulled a hamstring and had to leave the game.
August 26, 2017 at 8:45 pm #31714Does it look like a long delay, I’m guessing due to the weather or is it the injury…
August 26, 2017 at 8:51 pm #31716Cards win on Pham’s walkoff 2 run HR.
August 26, 2017 at 8:54 pm #31717Nice to finally get a feel good come back
Great for Pham
Sucks to see Gyorko out though
Mejia or Diaz should be on the move right now if think. Outside shot of Valera if we wanted to go with Garcia as the starter.
NIce work by Leake too. 4 runs in 7 innings is manageable. Especially when the offense wasn’t doing anything behind him.
Go Cards!
August 26, 2017 at 9:11 pm #31722Cubs have a huge win, 17-2.
August 26, 2017 at 9:29 pm #31723bccran
ParticipantIf Gyorko is out, will it be Wisdom?
August 26, 2017 at 9:48 pm #31724woild make sense but not on 40 man but It would be fun
What I’m worried about though is that we almost lost the game tonight because we were playing 1man short when we had Yadi at 2nd and got that hit. Fowler could have scored IMO as a pinch runner but we couldn’t pinch run with needing the pinch hitter for Garcia later and Kelly being the backup catcher.
Playing any game down 1palyer any time is risky. Playing potentially 2men down when we need every win seems extremely risky if not dangerous. Gyorko needs 10 days you need to make that decision tonight same with Fowler. We can’t play down 2 or at worst 1 man for multiple games in a row. It’s basically a 2 man bench at that point with Kelly a non factor as backup catcher. That’s just not good.
August 26, 2017 at 9:50 pm #31725Also I did notice Tovar ran for mejia in the 7th at Memphis
Could be an indicator
August 27, 2017 at 8:45 am #31741Good to get the comeback win. A loss there and you really feel any chance of making a run slipping away. A win keeps things positive for now.
As for Leake, I wonder if he might thrive in the closer’s role? He has a bit of that crossfire delivery, and reminds me somewhat of Dennis Eckersley. He’s not as good as Eckersley of course, but kind of looks like him and has sort of a similar delivery. Eck had almost perfect control though, and while Leake is not bad he is not as sharp.
But maybe in 1 inning stints, where he can just let loose and throw he would be very effective.
Management needs to seriously look at bringing Lynn back, although he’s probably going to cost more than we are willing to offer, and then audition Leake for a bullpen role in 2018.
But Lynn “costing more than we are willing to offer” is why we struggle to get to post season. At some point we need to hit on a key player, and not keep coming up with the second best offer.

Participantthej… what do you think that indicates, because I wondered about that also. Apparently not an injury. Was Mejia on his way to STL, or did they need more speed?
August 27, 2017 at 10:52 am #31752bikemike, are you suggesting Lynn is a “key player”? I don’t see him being the missing piece they should overpay on.
August 27, 2017 at 11:05 am #31757wagee12
ParticipantDon’t want Lynn back, don’t need him back. Let him and his 92 mph fastballs walk. He is at his ceiling and there is only one way now and that is down.
August 27, 2017 at 11:13 am #31758They definitely need to make some DL decisions today. Playing down is a recipe for losing close games. Using pitchers as pinch runners and hitters is ok in a pinch, but shouldn’t be a strategy, especially with the underperforming bullpen we have.
