The needs seem to be power and left handed pitching. I sure hope they draft a 3rd baseman or outfielder with power, as a first baseman only, limits potential. For a team (not on 40 man roster) to have so few lefties is disturbing. I can think of only 3 in AA or better, who look interesting, Gomber, Evans and Littrel. But Littrel, who I was high on last year, had the suspension and was not particularly good in 2017. If it wasn’t for the lack of lefties he may not even be around in 2018.
Sleepers for us. Sort of like Ryan Helsley for me the last few years. Someone who should be ranked significantly higher. Or others who will be in next years rankings.
Unless Molina gets hurt, I think Carson Kelly should start the season in Memphis. Maybe Pena can be the backup until midseason. My thinking is that Kelly’s trade value is higher that way, and it would keep him sharp. Call him up in May or June, or trade him near the deadline.
How about Huston Street? Not sure of his health if he is anything like he used to be. Probably get him on a minor league contract if he is rehabbing.
Roriguez seems to have very good potential. Hopefully he and Lopez play in Peoria in 2018. Maybe Oviedo and Seijas can be their battery mates.
I have always wondered why a team wouldn’t put emphasis on left handed pitching, at least as a tiebreaker in making choices. 3 things mostly coveted would have to be power, speed and left handers. Especially for the current state of our farm system, which we have only 1 left hander who stands out, Gomber. It is a quality that always be traded, i.e. Marco Gonzalez.
I do not agree with their grade on the Cards pitching prospects. No other system can boast the starters (and future relievers from the group) we have at AA and AAA. With Alex Reyes and Flaherty having not graduated from rookie status yet also. It is a little troubling what is at high A and below, but again we are surely not the only team with gaps in their system. Also pitchers like Seijas and Oviedo along with 3 picks in the first 39 in this coming draft should help as well.

GonzalesThis is before injuries which surely would change these names. This is an exciting group. It puts Gant and Poncedeleon in the bullpen, which the latter may be a very good fit in that role. Also assuming Derian Gonzales isn’t moved to the pen where he ended 2017. He could be Springfields closer.
If I wanted to go to Spring Training one of these years, is there a better option, website, group, than going thru the Cardinals? They seem pretty expensive.
The Grichuk trade works for 2 reasons 1) We get a top notch reliever, which we are in dire need of, and 2) We will give O’Neill and/or Bader playing time. Even Garcia may make his debut in 2018. I tire of the new age player who swings for the fences on every occasion. O’Neill might fit that description now, but I am hoping he will improve. Good luck Randall, but I believe this helps prune the vines so others can grow.
So who is saying this team, as constructed can win 90 games? Unless we get amazing contributions from rookies or unknowns, this team cannot win 90 games. Gregerson is our closer, and we pass on Reed at reasonable years and price. How much cheaper can we get a closer than 2 years/18.5 mill?
I have always wondered how Homer Bailey would do if moved to the bullpen. I believe his velocity is still there. But 2 things stand in the way, 1) The huge money owed to Bailey, and 2) likely the Reds would never deal him within the division. At this point I would take a Huston Street signing, even though he may be washed up.
I’d like to know what average Carpenter hits in different spots in the lineup. I can’t recall any player that hits so well in the leadoff spot but nowhere else. Also, is he sub .200 versus the Cubs? I sure hope he takes advantage of having Ozuna bat behind him, as one of the lineups they have proposed.

WongMore and more I think Cardinals fans are being played by management. Love the Ozuna trade, but that should only be the beginning.
It just makes me sick that Reed signs 2 years/ $17 million with Twins. I just don’t understand how the Cards with their bullpen in the shape it is in couldn’t top that offer. But yet we could give Cecil 4 years and $28 mill. Being cheap and afraid another Cecil signing shouldn’t stop the Cardinals from doing needed business. I love the young arms, and they could fill out the bullpen, but every chance should be given for them to continue as starters as long as possible.
Its does seem as if there is way less trades and free agent signings than I expected. ALso, given the fact that pitchers and catchers will report to spring training in 6 weeks.
After reading that Yelich was made available, I propose a trade of Pham, Kelly, and Tuivelalla for Yelich, Steckenrider, and Barrclouigh. This is presuming Miami trades Reamuto. Maybe even include Bowman, or Mayers, for Ziegler, making it a 4 for 4 trade. I would hate to trade Pham, but we would get a controllable LH hitter with huge upside, and upgrade our bullpen. Miami makes a great trade partner, due to their scouting of our farm system, and the previous Stanton/Ozuna trade talks. And best of all, we retain our premium pitching prospects in case we want to upgrade our starting rotation.
6th Starter ideas. I think if any further trades are made to create roster spots, maybe the Cards should consider a plan to conserve innings on potential 6th starter candidates/ relievers:
1) Alex Reyes pitches out of the pen thru mid May or early June. Then he is sent to Memphis to build up his pitch count as a starter.
2) Hudson, Helsley, Gomber, and Gant start at Memphis. Hudson and/or Helsley get called up, and are moved to the pen at the end of July/ early August. This is presuming no injuries occur among the starters, in which case I would think that Gant or Gomber, depending on their performance at Memphis could fill in on a shorter term basis in the rotation.Granted 2 roster spots would be needed, but surely Helsley and Hudson would get a look in September at least any way.
I think we should sign Addison Reed, and seek a trade for Longoria and Archer. Maybe Gyorko, Kelly, and Fernandez for those 2.
Gallen, Sierra, and Castano are other 3 minor leaguers in Ozuna deal. Sorry to see Sierra go, but the others don’t hurt as much.
Maybe I am too impatient, but I will consider it a failure if we do not add someone TODAY. Like Ozuna and/or Colome at least. Management has had weeks to get this done. DO they think other teams asking prices are going to all of sudden drop? Those are 2 pressing needs. I also feel opening up a roster spot or 2 through trade for some young Rule 5 candidates. There are several intriguing prospects available.
There is getting to be a logjam for starters at AA and AAA. The potential trades, Stanton or others, should thin this situation down. But I wonder if some of the current starters would be moved to the pen. Keep 2 of our top prospects in starters roles as 6th/7th starters. I think Helsley, Hudson, and Alcantara could be candidates for the St Louis builpen with their top notch stuff. And Derian Gonzalez could move very fast as a reliever.
Really curious trading Diaz for a low A outfielder. This is the bet offer they could get? I would rather have kept for middle imfield insurance. I can think of only 2 reasons they would do this. !) His salary wouldn’t be justifiable for someone who may not make the team. Or 2) THey need to clear a roster spot, maybe they have a free agent ready to sign, or An eye on someone exposed in the Rule 5 draft.
Shouldn’t the Cardinals get an idea if Stanton will accept a trade to STL first, (Maybe they privately do, but doubt it) and if so, aren’t we just being pawns in this game to help MIami get a better offer from another team? If he stays healthy, my thought is that he will opt out after 3 years and sign with the Dodgers.
