I think this farm system is the best i can remember in my time watching our minor leagues. Now, that doesn’t mean we won’t have some players not live up to expectations. I expect us to contend by 2028. And with the minor leagues playing next year no matter what, that might be an advantage for the Cards, as we nay have a lot of near ready players at Memphis.
For me, it is been a long time. In 2013, the Cardinals had the consensus #1 system in MLB.
Six players were on the national Top 100s – Oscar Taveras, Shelby Miller, Carlos Martinez, Trevor Rosenthal, Kolten Wong and Michael Wacha.
Right now, they have three consensus Top 100’s – Rodriguez, Baez and Doyle, with Frias and Franklin on at least one list. Mathews, Cijntje and Bernal dropped off, but I would think could come back on.
I will say that the depth right now feels good. But in 2013 they also had Carson Kelly, Patrick Wisdom, Stephen Piscotty, Matt Adams, etc. working their way up, so it is hard for me to compare.
Someone help me out here. As I look at the Matrix, I see 26 players on the active roster, two on 60-IL stints (which don’t count on the 40 man roster) and 12 in AAA Memphis. At this point, until Urias is activated, aren’t there 38 on the active roster? Somehow, I miscalculated and had 39 with all the roster moves and trades, but unless I am missing something, there should only be 38 active now; right?
You are correct. The detailed transaction description in the Matrix was right. It says 38 as of the last 40-man move, Nelson Velazquez off. But I didn’t update the number in the table, which said 39. Thank you for pointing this out.
Pallante to IL (elbow), Fernandez up. Thus ends the season long stretch with no starters on the IL. Mathews had better strap in.

I guesd brian ypu were trying to give a hint with the previous post. I dont know if 34 innings is enough to validate hes ready but sometimes no choice.
Fernandez replaced Pallante on the 26 man yesterday. But they likely would have demoted him today without the Dobbins injury so Mathews could make the start. I will be curious if Hjerpe makes his start today in Memphis or if instead he is pitching in the bigs in a few days.
So far, Hjerpe is still starting for Memphis tonight. It would be a stretch to bring him up now, but he is pitching better than any of the remaining Triple-A starters. New guy Fleming starts tomorrow and is a wild card.
Who is replacing Dobbins in the rotation? Might it be Hjerpe? He might slot in after his start tonight with Memphis? I wonder if they’d do a stopgap option like Shuster. I hope not, though. Maybe add Thompson? But I would prefer calling up Hjerpe to either of those choices.
Of course there is an off day Monday. But with the double header against the Reds that may affect their decisions also.
If they were going to bring up Hjerpe there would be no point having him do his start in Memphis and then his next turn in STL. We need him now so just get on with it. But then, I don’t understand the ins and outs of beaming guys up instead of a proper run up.
I think they should claim or sign someone off waivers and put Dobbins on the 60 day. Either that or 60 day Dobbins and bring up someone who can actually throw 5 innings. I don’t think Either Hjerpe or Mautz is ready to do that yet especially since one has only 34 innings in 13 games and the other hasn’t really started since mid July.
Except for walks, his (Hjerpe) results have been good.
That trend continued last night in Memphis. 3.2 IP, 75 pitches, 1 H, 5 BB, 7K.
They’ve gone hard for strikeout guys with the hope they can fix the walks eventually. Some will work out, others won’t.
In the specific case of Hjerpe, he has less than 40 innings post-Tommy John. It takes time for almost everyone who went through it to get back to peak performance.
Who knows what injury Dobbins has? It’s a little early to be counting him out for the year.
I’m just assuming, but forearm tightness always has the same pattern. A pitcher takes time off for a month or two (so no Dobbins this year). Then they pitch a few games and feel it again and end up with Tommy John surgery. My fingers are crossed it isn’t this, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see Dobbins until 2028.
