The Braves non-tendered Penn Murfee last night.

In two seasons of MLB experience with the Mariners, Murfee has a 2.70 ERA and 0.97 WHIP.

He did end the season on the 60 day injured list with elbow inflammation, but this seems like a move the Cardinals have to make to get better going forward. Even if he doesn’t pitch in 2024, you add him in the hopes that he pitches in 2025 & 2026.

Good catch LA. Comin off 20 games under and with a system that is kind of light, it makes sense to roll the dice on guys that could pay off like Murfee. Menoah is another roll of the dice guy. Mo went for Roby, so maybe.

What about signing Woodruff? I know he’ll likely miss all or most of 2024, Maybe get him on a cheap 2 year deal.

I think signing Woodruff to a two year deal is a good idea. 2 yr/$20M.

$3M for 2024 and $17M for 2025, something like that.

Woodruff is in his last year of control. So, you are paying him one year not to play, and then one year hopefully to play.

Murfee, while you are paying him not to play in 2024, only costs you $800k, and you have control for three more years after that.

Shoulder surgery and missing the entire season…those moves never seem to pay off for St Louis, although they do pay off better for other clubs. I think I’d feel more comfortable with Woodruff when we see how he recovers. Often guys who miss the entire year struggle in their return, as we’ve seen with Waino multiple times in the past.

Shoulder problems don’t seem to have any predictable outcome like a TJ does. It seems like shoulder trouble never goes away for good. Hudson hurt his shoulder somehow when he was coming back from TJ. Flaherty had shoulder trouble. Now we have to be concerned about Graceffo who missed a month this past season with shoulder trouble. And of course there is Roby. I hope Mo doesn’t bring in any more shoulder trouble guys.

Correct, that is why the salary would have to be heavily staggered towards 2025. Someone like the Dodgers or Cubs will be smart enough to do it.

It was a long time ago, but Chris Carpenter came back from a torn labrum. Of course, the financial risk taken by the Cards in signing him back then was much lower than Woodruff’s cost today. Bottom line, the Cardinals are not big risk takers.

O’Neill for Manoah. Overpay/underpay? Who says no?

The Jays would say no because Manoah has four years of control left and O’Neill only has one.

O’Neill is a good candidate for them, but doesn’t match up with Manoah (who is worth more) on his own.

If you look at the Jays 24 depth chart:
    https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/depth-charts/blue-jays
They have holes at LF (Kiermaier FA), 2B (Merrifield FA), and 3B (Chapman FA). Biggio and Schnieder can probably fill one infield spot, but not both. The fit is probably Edman if they want consistency in the infield or O’Neill and Graceffo to reach the value for Manoah.

Maybe Saggesse instead of Graceffo for their 2B/3B depth.

I think I could go with O’Neill and Saggesse for Manoah.

What about Jordan Hicks? Isn’t he currently a free agent?

Yes Hicks is a free agent. I would not be interested in that reunion unless it was a very cheap one year deal.

Paul Goldschmidt is now the top-rated player to be moved at the trade deadline.

I am surprised you want Hicks back. You were on his case almost every single game he pitched.

    Here’s a trade idea……
Gorman, Walker, Donovan, Hence, Robberse, Honeyman
    for
    Cease, Robert, Kopech

    Is this a fair trade?
Is it realistic to think that the Cardinals would do it?
Is it realistic to think that the White Sox would do it?

That would be highly ambitious and potentially destructive. I would probably scale it back and try to just get Cease.

I would do it, mud. My thinking is Walker and Donovan is fair for Robert. Gorman, Hence and a couple more good prospects for Cease. Solves our CF question. Noot goes to RF. We have our ace. Sagesse steps up to infield badkup. The downside is we have to go with O’Neill is LF again.

That said, I would very much prefer a blockbuster involving the bronze busts rather than the top young guys. But, of course, you have to have a buyer.

Don’t worry, Bling. Goldschmidt will be traded at the deadline this year.

The over the hill gang will do the best they can. I do like the idea of bringing in veterans to provide clubhouse leadership. I saw no evidence of any last year.

I’m kind of interested to see how Lance gets along with Ollie and Blake.

Robert would solve our centerfield question, along with adding his cost controlled impact bat. We would also have that top of rotation pitcher in Cease. Kopech is listed on the White Sox website as being in their bullpen, but he’s actually a starter. I think that this package would be strong enough to add Gregory Santos from the White Sox instead of Kopech.

With this, the White Sox have their infield established for years to come with Walker at 1B, Donovan at 2B, their own top prospect, Colson Montgomey, at SS, and Gorman at 3B. And they get Hence who has the makings of a #1 starter. Honeyman would hold promise for the White Sox’ outfield, and Robberse gives them a legitimate bullpen candidate.

It would be especially tough for the Cardinals to lose Donovan because he plays well all over the field. But, IMO, he has earned the role of being an everyday second baseman. Prieto, Fermin, or Kennedy could handle utility for the Cardinals, or maybe, they could pick up utility guy in the Rule 5 draft. Baker would be available for 1B if Goldy needs a day off. Saggese needs more time at AAA for now, and with that bat of his, he probably should not join the big club until Edman moves off of 2B for one reason or another.

Burleson plays left field. Our fourth and fifth outfielders would be Carlson and Palacios, if Palacios can continue his strong play.

This trade would be a lot for the Cardinals to give up. But it’s going to take a lot to get a player like Robert and a pitcher like Cease.
