I hope it is the Cardinals but a more likely scenario is that we get two relievers and call it a day.
Two middling relievers that no one cares about
I’d really like to see the Cardinals pay for Yamamoto or Imanaga. I don’t think it’s likely – especially Yamamoto. But we have money to spend and that’s where it makes the most sense. Then one of Matz or Lynn can go to the pen if everyone is healthy or we just trade Matz – although that’s not my preference.
I can keep dreaming, right?

Relievers who don’t have a 4+ BB/9 would be nice. Especially a late inning reliever.
Differing opinions are what i seek out GC, yours included. Whether they provide any value to me is a trend I am constantly awhere of.
I can’t think of anything more hazardous to the TV room furniture than a 9th inning guy who BB’s the lead-off man…
JJ – Hader would also be great for our pen. It doesn’t seem like a Cardinals type of move though. But yeah, that clearly makes this team better. As long as we don’t have to give him 5+ years. Too much volatility in relievers.
We could have HH in Hader/Helsley. To get to HHH, who do we add then? We do have Hayes Heinecke down in Palm Beach, but that might be a quadruple H.

This is kind of a misnomer. Elite relievers tend to be above average to excellent their entire careers.
It’s the middling relievers that have one great year or one atrocious year that cause the perception.
Hader reportedly wants $100 million. I’d rather build a bullpen of 4-5 good cost-controlled relievers through trades, than make one signing like Hader.
I don’t think it’s a wild guess to assume that they’ll go with Helsley and Gallegos as the two primary late inning components of the ’24 BP.
He’d cost a draft pick too, LA, plus the salary.
We added plus quality to the rotation by signing Gray. I think the pen needs that type quality added too.
The last time the Cardinals allocated a significant amout of money to a FA relief pitcher his name was Brett Cecil, and I’m pretty sure that I never saw him record a solitary out…
1TD – you normally have such a great memory, but Greg Holland and Andrew Miller were both signed after Brett Cecil.
Yeah, but I once saw Holland record a groundout and I distinctly recall seeing Miller induce Zsa Zsa Gabor into an off balance swing that resulted in a lazy fly ball out to shallow RF…Haha!
I don’t understand why the Cards FO continues to prioritize cheap salaries versus previous track record. Most times track records add up to way more consistent results. Brad Hand could have been signed for less than 2 mill with an option for 2024, which ended up being declined.
And I still think Hollands results were not good, but Miller largely pitched okay to good. Nothing like Cecil.
I would also love to sign Josh Hader but I think he ends up with the Cubs to reunite with his old manager.
For the rotation we need to trade for Cease, plain and simple.
You get what you pay for I guess. I think Cease is better than Gray. They would be a very good one two punch. They could go toe to toe with Wheeler and Nola in a playoff series.
