No way would I have ever done 10/700 if I were the Dodgers.

They will regret that contract big time one of these days.

For a little perspective on this deal the cardinals rotation last year (6 pitchers)…Mikolas, Matz, Waino, Monty, Hudson and flaherty made $67 million

The Projected Rotation this year w/ Gray taking 10 mill the first year for 5 pitchers is $62 Million

Most of the money is deferred. The Dodgers may be paying him for 50 years. I guess they figure they will at least break even with all of the marketing dollars he brings in. Of course you also have to factor in that you are buying the best hitter in MLB and the best pitcher in MLB. $350M for each I guess.

Just think. If the Cardinals had bid 10/800 mil, Ohtani would would have been on his way to St. Louis right now.

The Cardinals bid for Ohtani probably fell about $600M short.

    I 100% doubt that.

The Dodgers won’t regret Ohtani’s contract. They have billions to burn. He’ll make them WS contenders every year and they might have 2-3 titles out of it. The Cardinals couldn’t do that but a few teams could and that’s why the Cardinals will always be an after thought in these days of baseball financing.

Some talking head said they would make it back in advertising, etc. in US and Japan in 6-7 years.

They’ll make it back in beer sales…They’ll then make a killing on hot dogs and cotton candy alone, not to mention the enormous returns from sushi sales.

They probably do sell sushi at the ballpark in LA.

What is the biggest need on todays roster you could fill with one player? Have a name in particular?

One player that would solve a lot of issues would be Robert Stephenson. He would dramatically raise our K/9 numbers, but with low walk totals and at less than half the AAV that Hader will command. He throws 97 MPH too, which is good after we lost Hicks.

He past struggles would keep the contract short.

Baur seems like the elephant in the room not even the media wants to talk about. He is possibly a 5 win player for some team. A true #1. Totally ignored by the media. If Flahterty can get $14 million Baur’s floor has to be north of $20 million.

Trevor Baur is radioactive. But does he deserve it? Take a listen to Baur’s video dated Oct. 2nd, 2023. He turns 33 years old on January 17, 2024.

Baur was set up. If MLB colludes against signing him I hope he takes them for $$ 500 million minimum in court

I do believe that Bauer presents the possibility of delivering a WAR of 3+. However, it appears this off-season the Cards are looking to add players who can contribute on the field and help build a healthy club house environment. I would think that Bauer would have to clear both these hurdles with the Front Office as well as veteran leadership on the team before any deal is struck.

I would be surprised if anyone signs Bauer. As was mentioned he is radioactive.

I still think the Cardinals are one quality starter short of being a division contender. My first choice would be Dylan Cease and my second choice would be Shane Bieber. If we wanted to do a bad contract swap maybe we could get Robbie Ray for Matz and Burlseson.

I really like the Robert Stephenson idea. He would be a very good setup man and wouldn’t break the bank.

Ray has a highly negative contract, while Matz is on the positive end still. Ray is due 3yr/$73M over the next three years, essentially the same contract as Sonny Gray.

Per BTV, he was at -25.7 back in September, but now is at -43.2. I’m not sure why the drastic change. I don’t see the Mariners doing that (and paying us money)

The Dodgers know more about Bauer and his situation than anyone. As discussed often, they are a very well-run organization. That they chose to release him and eat $22.5 million rather than return him to the active roster last season said all I needed to hear. Further, no other team would touch him in 2023 even at the minimum salary (with the Dodgers already paying the rest). Nothing has changed with him since (other than he probably wants more than the minimum salary this coming year).

I think with Bauer, people have to give him some leeway in that new information has come out since that choice the Dodgers made.

That Bauer and the California woman settled their respective lawsuits doesn’t seem to change the basics of the story. Bauer’s camp accentuated that the only money the woman got was from insurance, not from him. Who paid for the harm caused doesn’t move the meter for me, but others may feel differently.

He paid big time for salary lost during his record 194-game suspension ($37 million), but hasn’t sued MLB for wrongful action, trying to recoup that money.

Bauer still has a open lawsuit filed by an Arizona woman. There are also two earlier assault complaints from others that don’t seem to be in the legal system, but were apparently part of MLB’s investigation.

We will see if any MLB team wants him.

GS, I’ve seen 4/36mil for Stephenson as the “buzz” reliever this offseason.

While his 38IP w/TBR were impessive, I don’t see the track record to offer him four seasons. Pass.

Ray is underwater since he missed almost the entire 2023 season and may miss a chunk of the 2024 season as well. He is one of those guys that has much more upside than Matz but also carries significant risk. I figure the Mariners would be motivated to shed his contract but the Cardinals may not want to take the risk.

I wouldn’t be interested in a 4 year deal either but if he could be had on a 2 year deal I would certainly take a look.
