Urias was one of the top free agents to be this coming off-season. He might have cost himself $100 million here.

A very significant development indeed. The Dodgers have dealt with that with Bauer, now Urias. No doubt this will have huge implications on the free agent market, not to mention the Dodger’s chances of a world series this year.

The biggest needs of the Cards is that of a pitching ace, see Yamamoto. And a revamped bullpen. Pallante I would keep, but he may be a depth piece at Memphis next year. In fact, I may try him as a starter at AAA. The only problem with that would be that there could be a large contingent of candidates for Memphis rotation, I.e. Roby, Kloffenstein, Mcgreevy, Graceffo, Woodford, Liberatore, Lunn, Cornwall, Robberse.

Gallegos’ stats have declined the last 2 years, so he may only be here because of his contract.

Helsley I still really like, but he has to stay healthy. I’m thinking he may only have a year or 2 of team control left.

King is a reliever we really don’t know about.

Romero has looked very good at times, and should be in the mix.

But we need at least 2 or 3 upgrades in the bullpen to be competitive.

As far as relief prospects go, Svanson heads my list. I was hoping Loutos would be STL ready this year, but he has struggled. I also like Granillo. However it is sad how few relief prospects we have. Hopefully some of the current minor league starters may be converted to relief, and may achieve greater success.

Urias has some previous history also:

“The arrest comes four years after Urias, a star Dodgers player who earns more than $14 million a year, was placed on administrative leave following a similar incident in which he was arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department on suspicion of “intimate partner battery.”

“Urias, then 22, was involved in an altercation with a woman in a shopping center parking lot, according to a 2019 article in The Los Angeles Times. The city prosecutor agreed not to file misdemeanor charges so long as Urias was not arrested again for violent criminal behavior that year, the newspaper reported.”

Cleveland lost 20-6 behind Giolito (3 IP, 9 ER). Let’s hire that guy.

George Kirby (SEA) hasn’t issued a BB in his last 5 GS. 0/26 BB/K, 30.2 IP.

Lots of guys have bad stretches. Maybe his price tag will drop enough that Mo will be in on him, I suppose. The puke point gets nearer with every bad start. Ha!

If the Angels make Mike Trout available would we have any interest? That would be quite a contract to take on for quite a long time.

There has been quite a bit of discussion regarding the Cardinals and Mariners being a good match for a trade, with the Cardinals needing starting pitching and the Mariners needing outfielders. I was looking at the trade simulator site and found that Lars Nootbaar has a value of 67.8 while Logan Gilbert has a value of 64.6. I wonder if there could be the makings of a one for one swap? Both players are young, cheapish, and have four years of control remaining.

Interestingly enough Nootbaar has the highest trade value of any Cardinal on that particular site. I’m sure the Cardinals don’t want to trade him but they might have to in order to get such a high quality young starter like Gilbert. Even if O’Neill or Carlson also get traded that would still leave us with an OF of O’Neill/Carlson, Edman, and Walker. We would then have Donovan, Burleson, and Palacios available to fill in when needed.

Pretty sure it was Gilbert the Mariners weren’t listening on.
Kirby has 5yrs control remaining, same as Gorman. Both trending as super2’s for 2025.
Miller / Woo both having plus debuts.

Yes, and the Mariners need a 2B more than they need an OF. They have five OF’s with an OPS of .750 or above. At 2B, none of their players have an OPS higher than .660.

So, to get a pitcher, we’d have to trade Gorman.

Gorman and Nootbaar both young and in their prime, yet both have had trouble staying on the field this year. PAs in mid-400s as of now. For comparison, Goldschmidt is mid 600s. Last year, Nootbaar finished with 347 PAs, and Gorman with 313 PAs.

So neither Nootbaar nor Gorman will have a full load ML season on their resume heading into this winter. I am not sure if, or how much, that may affect perception of value by other teams. What they ‘should’ be able to do, and what they have done, are not the same thing. It would be a mistake to sweep it under the rug.

Is there a pattern of similar injuries or anything that might appear chronic? If not, then I doubt it is going to matter.

Gorman still leads the team in HRs, for example.

I really don’t know how reliable the trade simulator site is but here are their current values for potential trade pieces.

    Nootbaar- 67.8
    Walker-59.3
    Gorman- 39.1
    Edman-21.8
    Donovan-13.7
    O’Neill- 8.7
    Carlson- 3.7

    Kirby- 90.1
    Gilbert-64.6
    Woo- 25.2
    Miller-20.2

If these numbers are correct then Gorman for Kirby won’t work and Gorman for Gilbert won’t work. The Cardinals would have to throw in other pieces. Noot seems to have the most value, at least according to this source.

Well, BTV isn’t necessarily how front offices see things. Seattle may have a higher value on Gorman than Nootbaar.

But in constructing a team, your job is to maximize the overall roster subject to roster and payroll constraints.

If you take a guy with a .750 OPS and upgrade to .820, you add about 70 points on offense.

If you take a guy with a .660 OPS and upgrade to .800, you add 140 points of offense.

If I was Seattle, I’d be asking for Gorman instead of Nootbaar.

Also note: 750 OPS was the lowest of their 5 outfielders, and .660 OPS was the highest of their three second basemen.

It’s our valuation of Noot and Gorman that matters, and it should be extremely high. Clubs don’t have to match our ask, just hang up, we are better with them.

It’s the value each club places on the players. It takes two to tango.

Depends on who we make available LA, that’s still our choice. Gorman or Noot should cost a club dearly, but do we really need to make them available?

That would be listening to offers for our leadoff or #3 batter. Both lefties, that balance our righty front/middle of the order. Key pieces at near minimum salaries. I don’t want BillyMo to go there. They didn’t last offseason.

If one gets traded we’ve acquired a solid near minimum SP2. I’d prefer SP1 and SP2 come from free agency.

If it costs 45-50mil AAV to secure the SP1 and SP2, we’ve spent our current budget amount for next season, but we have a top of the rotation.

    The lineup is still intact.
Contreras, Goldy, Gorman, Arenado, Winn (i like him) sets the infield, and Noot, Edman, Walker covers the outfield. We have 3 catchers so DH is covered w Willson.

No, we’re not world series bound on paper, but we are back to contending for the division and in the wild card hunt.

Kizner, Carlson, Donovan, Burleson, Baker and O’Neill is more than enough value to go acquire a SP3 in trade and a nice bullpen piece. A SP3 who would challenge Mikolas for the SP3/SP4 roles. SP5 I have a lefty pair in Matz/Thompson.

There is enough depth and OF redundancy to fill out the rotation while keeping the lineup intact, but payroll cash has to carry the day on SP1 and SP2.

In terms of money and years, to get free agents SP1 and SP2, they would have to spend on pitching like never before.

Was this year enough to jolt them into it?
Will they go into the off-season with this mindset or fully exhaust the trade market first?
Will they strike quickly even if it means overpaying perhaps or wait for the market “to develop” and risk losing out on the prime targets?

In trade, maybe other teams would accept a combination of second-tier (for lack of a better term) players, but we all know the guys other teams really want – the ones it would hurt most to give up. Ultimately, that is why they signed Contreras last off-season.

Speaking of pitching. Blake Snell was nails last night in Los Angeles against the Dodgers. One hit thru six innings. I’d say he’s the front runner for the Cy Young.

When I wondered if this year was enough to jolt them into trading the bronze busts the response was almost unanimously ‘no’. Maybe BDW values his money less. We will soon find out.
