Three Cardinals will be under club control for one more season (2024), and then become FA’s for 2025. They are Goldschmidt, O’Neill and Hudson.
Goldschmidt has a guaranteed contract. Tyler and Dakota need to be tendered an arb3 contract this winter, or non-tendered and allowed to become free agents.
If tendered, they are eligible to be traded. I will estimate Tyler at 6mil and Dakota at 3mil, in 2024.
Goldy is a gate draw and one of our top four hitters, along with his excellent D. He’s here thru 2024 and then we will see.
What will Mo do with Tyler and Dakota this winter?
What would you do?Well it would be silly to non-tender O’Neill after not trading him at the deadline, when they at least could have received something in return. I would probably tender a contract to both. O’Neill as a rebound candidate and Hudson as depth. Neither should be so costly as to prevent the Cardinals from spending big on other additions.
For Tyler and Dakota, my guess is the remainder of the season determines their fate.
Neither has trade value worthy of being concerned about what you could have received, imo.
If either looks like they could help the 2024 roster, tender him/them. If not, adios.
I would tender O’Neill. He is truly a Gold Glove defender when he is going all in, and a premium slugger when healthy. I would, not only tender Hudson, but I would try to extend him for an extra year if he performs well for the next month and a half. (I already know most of the reasons why some people might disagree. I admit that I’m a bit of a ‘homer’. I’m still holding out hope for these Cardinnal players to overcome their struggles, and I believe it’s possible.)
Good points. Neither would break the bank next season because their mlb time this season has been limited. My estimates of their arb3 salaries didn’t award them much of a raise.
I think there’s not much reason not to tender Hudson, especially if he looks at least decent down the stretch. For $3 million, that’s a no-brained insurance policy for a 5/6/7 starter with experience.
I can’t imagine them not tendering O’Neill. They may trade him afterwards in Spring training. But he’s got too much upside not to take another chance.
I do think that at least 4 players just get cut from the 40-man. There’s a lot of very marginal players there. And I think Yepez is one of those along with several pitchers (Suarez, Naile, Leahey). I could see Gomez being cut too but he’s more borderline. The other one who I’m not sure if he gets a contract is Woodford. Sure, he’s cheap. But I don’t think the Cardinals have any real reason other than that to keep him around. He’s another borderline call.
Oh, and I forgot about Motter. He’ll be gone too. And Fermin probably should be as well. That’s a lot of spots we can clear to protect for the Rule 5 draft and add some free agent pitchers.
It probably won’t happen, but if we signed Yamamoto would the Cards lose draft picks? I am thinking no.
I don’t think any draft pick would be lost but there would be a hefty posting fee in addition to the contract.
I think Musgrove might be a trade target if the Padres are looking to cut payroll. Would Carlson or O’Neill and Liberatore be a fair trade?
Yeah I think Carlson and Liberatore for Musgrove would be a fair trade. I don’t know if the Padres would consider it since they seem to constantly be in win now mode but Musgrove would be a very good fit for the Cards. He is better than Mikolas IMO. Good call C27.

The Padres are shutting down starter Joe Musgrove for three weeks after an MRI revealed inflammation in the capsule of his throwing shoulder,
Carlson is also about to be shut down for the year. This potential trade would have to be revisited over the winter.

I would sign Yamamoto, trade for Musgrove, and/or sign Lugo.
Also, I have a very obscure target. Johan Dominguez. Has been injured a lot. Good minor league numbers. He might be attainable through Rule 5 draft. In fact, he pitches tonight against Memphis, so I’m hoping to watch him on MILBTV.
This off-season is THE time to trade Goldschmidt. Walker is bad in the outfield but should be able to play first.
Like it or not the pitching staff just has too many holes to fill in one year.
The haul for Goldschmidt should be considerable and at his age and the team still a couple of years away from being a serious contender this feels like the time to trade him.
IMO there is not a single starter on the current roster that I’d be excited to see in next year’s rotation. Not one – and by default 2-3 are going to have to be….
Walker is bad in the outfield but should be able to play first.
There is no reason to believe Walker can play first. He was bad at 3B, he is bad in the outfield. He is similar to Jose Martinez and Juan Yepez on defense.
Walker can’t play 1stbase. He needs to be the main DH with the occasional spot start to give somebody a day off.
If anybody has watched St. Louis games for the last five years they will see how many times Goldschmidt’s defense at 1stbase has save us runs.
Remember how bad Matt Carpenter was at 1stbase? I am 64 years old and guarantee you that I could play 1st better than some players nowadays.

A tall guy who came up playing 3B can probably play 1B pretty well. Or could with some time at the position. That is, unless he was terrible at the hot corner. But I inquired about his defense back when the hype cadets were first getting all worked up, and was told “he’ll be fine”, so I doubt he was terrible.
Anyone who thinks manning up with a mitt at 1B is easy should have to play in off the dirt with Williams, Musial or Gehrig standing in the box.
In Money Ball, Brad Pitt was able move a catcher with arm problems to first. I have faith that if a Hollywood actor can do it our professional staff can teach Walker to play first…
